..says a person with little knowledge.

Consider this:

Our galaxy contains 200 billion stars that are the same as our sun... (however vary in size, smaller and 10x larger for eg.)

Our galaxy is just one of 125 billion galaxies.

Still think we are the only life? if so that's pretty ignorant.

well, if there's 200 billion stars and let's say that there is a 0.001 chance that a planet will be in the correct position to support life, with all those stars at least one planet can support life. I'm no evolutionist, I believe in creation, and don't see why God wouldn't put beings on another planet (not super sophisticated aliens like the Combine or Covenant, but maybe some little 1-foot tall monster things or something)

along with those planets you also have to take into account on how many planets we have not found life on, which is all of them. life is rare as we are finding out, and while i don't believe we are the only planet that have life on it, its not impossible to think that we are.

it'll definitely be interesting if we do find life. that way we can establish if there are a print set of rules for life, like the ones we follow. or if there are broader terms. like the air you breathe, or if they have to breath at all. or if evolution is universal, or just the way it is here on earth (for those of us who believe in it). how they reproduce. could be something totally different found here on earth.

from books i've read and shows i've watched it seems most scientists think they have to follow our rules.

Actually, there is a planet called "Gliese 581 d" in a galaxy known as Gliese 581. The Earth as we know it, is in a certain zone of our galaxy called the "Habitable Zone" which is the possible area to support life. This Gliese 581 d is also in it's own orbit in a habitable zone. Which means that it could support water, due to the fact that the temperature would be akin to earth. It is 7.7 times as big as the earth. I think that this planet may be a good guess if one were to look for aliens. However this is only an idea and the chances are slim.

Actually it's estimated that there are more than 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe (which from what I understand is the part that we might be able to see from Earth). That's way more than 200 billion stars.

You could say that there's life on other planets (Bacteria on Mars) but the existance of "advanced" (multicellular organisms) and/or "intelligent" life on other planets has yet to be found so we have no definitive answer.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest life outside our own solar system, but due to the almost incomprehensible size and nature of the universe, the chances of life are absolutely massive. And there is of course debatable evidence of small fossilised life on Mars from the past, and possible evidence of flowing water, but this is as I said debatable.

I wouldn't say it's ignorant. There is a distinct possibility that no intelligent (I believe you are implying intelligent) life beyond earth. That being said, the opposite holds true as well.

Personally, I think that there was an alien civilization millions of years ago, and someday we will discover it visually. However, the light will also be millions of years old, and therefore we will be watching an active civilation on earth through out instruments, yet the civilization will have passed into history.

It's sad, really.

You could say that there's life on other planets (Bacteria on Mars) but the existance of "advanced" (multicellular organisms) and/or "intelligent" life on other planets has yet to be found so we have no definitive answer.Ezgam3r

Alien:

1: a person of another family, race, or nation
2: a foreign-born resident who has not been naturalized and is still a subject or citizen of a foreign country; broadly: a foreign-born citizen
3: EXTRATERRESTRIAL
4: EXOTIC

Extraterrestrial:

originating, existing, or occurring outside the earth or its atmosphere

Now tell me where do you see "advanced" or "intelligent" in the definition of "alien"?

We do have the answer.

I never said aliens don't exist or that they have to be advanced or intelligent to be considered an alien. We all know there is life on other planets from the ancient bacteria they found on Mars.

All I said was that the existence of advanced and/or intelligent life is still uncertain.

I thought that Mars Rock we found turned out as inconclusive for life. Still, we're not going to stop looking on Mars just yet.

We know that water flowed on Mars early in it's history and there still might be liquid water below it's surface.

Europa is the next best bet for life in our solar system. If we find ANY life at all in our solar system, that greatly increases the odds to come to a conclusion that the universe is teeming with life.

There's also missions in place to look for other terrestrial planets in our galaxy and determine whether or not they have life (as we know it) just by reading the composition of the planet's atmosphere.

What's the position of religious leaders on this whole alien thing?

I dunno, there could be life. But I don't think humans like us. Some other species or something.

If Earth was any farther from the Sun, we'd freeze. If it was any closer, we'd fry. So were actually in the EXACT correct position to support life. Isn't that so weird? I would doubt that there would be another planet out there with the same idealistic position to a Sun as Earth is..

If that's true, then how come when the Earth is slightly farther from the Sun (winter) we don't freeze, and when it's slightly closer (summer) we don't burn?

There's just one single fact missing in that opening post... what's the odds of Spontaneous-Creation-Of-Life?

Hungry_bunny

Wow, a person with a brain...

If anything, science helpsdisprove life on other planets as, with our current knowledge, this spontaneous creation of life is impossible. Even with all our modern technology and knowledge, all we could create was organic material from inorganic material which is 1 of the 10^999999999 orsosteps it takes to develop an intelligent life form with such complexity that we probably will never understand. And this "creation" of organic material from inorganic material alonehad to take place in extremely artificial surroundings, which are nearly impossible to occur naturally.

Yea so crazy ridiculous that 2 out of 8 planets in our galaxy actually contain/contained some form of life.

:| The existence of anything in the universe is impossible, but hey everything is still here... we don't understand and it doesn't make any sense but somehow stuff exists.

Oh and mysteries of the universe are probably more capable of creating life than a bunch of humans with a machine.

It can't be "ignorance" if nobody (including yourself) actually knows whether or not there is other intelligent life. It's simply a personal belief. Perhaps you should go back to the 5th grade.

We can't be certain one way or the other, so why are you trying to start a flame war over it? Grow up.

One can at least make a pretty educated guess that it is possible. Our solar system and star is by no means the oldest in the universe, there are far older solar systems/stars out there.. In a Universe of 300+ million galaxies out there.. Each with 100 billion to 500 billion stars as last estimated.. I would think most would see it as a huge possibility when your given such a large pool.
