I don't understand. Originally JK said she was going to kill Harry in the 7th book and everyone complained and nagged her for months. Then she changes the book and people are still whining. Personally I thought the ending was amazing.Liquid-Prince

She never said she wasnt going to.

Don't worry about him, he likes to make things up off the top of his head and then try to pass them off as fact.

Watch your mouth. I don't like being insulted and you saying what you said is as good as a slap to the face. And as a matter of fact it was on the radio a couple months ago that there were people flooding JK with emails begging not kill Harry in the 7th book as she had it planned.
I'm not really sure she said that he would actually die, butI thinkI know why you might think that. I do remember several times when she hinted that he could. Someone asked her if there would be more Potter books and she said that the ending made it quite clear what happens to Harry. She has been really careful not to give anything away. I doalso remember people, including Stephen King, pleading with her not to kill Harry. A lot of people presumed that she would to prevent other people from writing stories about Harry and ruining the series. She considers the books her special babies and to let someone else tamper with her work, would be unbearable.
If I wrote such engaging and popular stories, I'd think the same way as her. And Harry Potter should never be written by anyone other then her.

I agree. Nobody should ever try to tamper with this great series. It's like when they wrote a sequel for Gone with the Wind. WHHYY?

Just finished reading the book. IMO even with all the spoilers and such it was still a really good book, and a satisfying end to a fantastic series.
I feel so bad for hating Snape as much as I did now, after reading "the Prince's Tale". It was so heartbreaking. He was an ass at times, but he was on Harry and Dumbeldore's side all along, and was obviouslypretty emotionalywracked because of Lily.
justiceboy13
Same here. Rowling did such a great job with that character. That chapter brought me to tears.
She once said that killing Potter would be a great way to end the series for good, meaning there would be no way to write a sequel. That's why when I reached the end I was fairly surprised.

I felt so sad when Dobby died, it was like the first character since the beginning of the series, other than maybe Sirius, whom I genuinly felt sad for having passed away. But when Snape died and after Harry went through his memories I really, really felt bad for hating him so much
d_eM_s

Same here..both of those parts made me cry.

I just wish it wouldn't end. The minute I had finished the book I was so happy but after that I felt... empty in a way. I used to re-read the Harry Potter books to refresh my memory but now that I know how it all ends it seems almost pointless. I will surely re-visit the series at some point in the future though.
Knowing about Snape's past made his death much more emotional to me. He is a true hero. You kinda got a sense that he would end up good, at the end, but not quite this emotional.

The thing about Snape's death was, you didn't actually really know the truth about him until after he was dead. I (as did most other people) were prepared for either outcome, either Snape would've been a double agent death eater (for some reason we didn't find out until now) or he would've been bad all along. Snape hated Harry and his dad, I don't think he felt sorry for them at all. He only cared about Lily, and it was he that caused her death in the first place. To tell you the truth I wasn't that moved by his death. But that's just my feelings. :)
I just finished the book today, and one question is still posed:

Why does JK Rowling never explain why people always say Harry has his mother's eyes? I assumed it would have SOME relevance to the plot...

It's different killing off a character after 7 books, when the character has been fully developed and a good amount of people have an emotional attachment to the character than to kill the main character of a short story, who has had minimal time to develop as a character.

stephen king wrote a 7 part fantasy series too, the dark tower where he killed off pretty much everyone. And the dark tower had some of the best developed characters and story of any fantasy series:|

Agreed. It'd be really funny if she had gotten all the ideas from a bum living in the alley behind her. She would listen by her window and write down everything he said as he talked to himself about a magical universe where a little boy named Harry lived.

If you must know, I find his whole writing style innapropriate given the stories he tends to write, it really takes away from the experience. He has good ideas, but his execution is horrible.

Just because her writing style is simple, it doesn't mean the books aren't masterfully written. She is a great author and that is undeniable.

But I can't belive how she layed the story out. The plot and story line has so many twists and turns and revolves around other books. Once you start thinking about it you realise how amazing she really is.

JK Rowling is not a great writer, she may write interesting situations, but her writing style is very simple. There are many authors who could write an extended universe better than she wrote the actual books, she is not a great writer in any way.

Just because her writing style is simple, it doesn't mean the books aren't masterfully written. She is a great author and that is undeniable.

Doesn't she use ghost writers half of the time?

I'm not ashamed to admit this book made me cry. I always get emotional when dealing with finales and things of that nature; but I've grown up with Harry Potter. I got Sorcerer's Stone in 2nd grade, and got Deathly Hallows in 11th. I kinda took Harry Potter books for granted for a while, but now I'm really depressed there are no more books. At the same time; I don't think I'd really want there to be more. This was a pretty satisfying end IMO, I'm just said it's over. I'm so happy for Harry though.

I second that. You don't need all the flourish and crap like that. If you write a simple book well, it often turns out better than a fancy book written poorly.

It would have been a much better ending to the series to have just remove the whole epilogue, definitely the worst part of the book.

Ok, now that I've confirmed the spoiler works *see above*, my thoughts are below.
well, it was my favorite book, it kept me in suspense, the action was great (the siege of Hogwarts was astonishing, that will be an amazing battle on the big screen), and the characters were as lively as ever. I was crushed with the deaths of so many-Lupin, Tonks, Dobby, Fred, Mad-Eye...and my favorite char, Snape. Here's hoping there's another bookl...I was a tad letdown with the epilogue, I wanted to find out what happened with George and the Weasleys....and though I wanted to see Neville off Bellatrix, it was great watching Mrs. Weasley kick some butt. Lol, sweetMrs. Weasley kicing Lestrange's arse...*chuckles*. And I loved how Neville killed Nagini, he's another one of my favorites. A little surprised Draco made it through, evenmore surprised he acknowledged Harry in the epilogue.
EPILOGUE WAS GREAT SEEING AS HOW IT WAS JUST EXTRA AND WAS NEVER SAID TO HAVE BEEN PUT IN. IT WAS ICING ON THE CAKE. What I dont get cause I may have skimmed over this part briefly is:
How did Neville get the Sword?
Why were you surprised?
Harry saved the entire world, wizarding and muggle, from the hands of Voldemort. The least he could do was give Harry a nod of recognition.

Alright am i the only one that was kinda disappointed by teh ending in harry potter. I mean i just read somewhere between three to four thousand pages of harry potter over the course of a couple years. And it came down to harry say expeleriamus and getting the wand. But i mean after reading this much and having the entire plotline focus on this final battle, dont you think she should have made it a little more climatic. All they did was basically circle for five pages like some dragonball z episode and then one little move and it was over. There should have been at least a chapter for the battle itself in my opinion. I know i am probably gonna get flamed for this post, but i also know i am not the only one who feels this way. Maybe i was just expecting something too epic for a final fight, but i mean if your writing 7 books i think the event that all the books were focusing on should be epic. Also ithought it was funny how when dumbledore and harry were speaking before harry went to fight voldemort he wsa like oo voldemorts and harrys souls are connected, like it was some gigantic revelation, but i mean come on, we knew that already they had only been seeing into each others minds for how many books now. Maybe im just frustrated that it didnt meet my expectation, maybe im not . Whatever the rest of the book was good in my opinion. Thoughts anyone?

We knew they were connected but I doubt you knew Harry had to die. Also the battle at the end was epic, and Harry did his spell which caused Voldemorts Avada Kedavra to flyback at him and kill him. I thought it was pretty epic.

The irony was that Lupin told Harry not to make expelliarmus his signature move since they were mainly going for kills, but in the end the spell actually did help in killing voldemort.

Even if harry had not cast the spell, i do not think that teh avada kedavra curse would kill him becaause the elder wand was afterall harrys and so could not attack or at least kill its rightfull owner. I think thats why harry did not feel any pain with cruciatus curse when voldemort cast it. Also it could be that the elder wand itself turned the spell on voldemort and that really any or no spell at all from harry would have done the trick
Finished reading this afternoon, a very satisfying ending to a very entertaining series. Whatever the hardcore fantasy nerds want to believe, this really is the Lord of the Rings/Narnia of its generation and will take its place among those greats.
