Almost suspended for racism

So i live in Canada and supposedly up here your not allowed to say the word "native" if your white. Anyways heres the story. I was sitting math class and my friend Trevor comes up to me and calls me white as a butter and i tell him hes brown like a native. Next thing i know the teacher comes up to me tells me to leave class and wait in the hallway for the principle to come and talk to me.

He brings me up to the office and he says I'm not allowed to say the word "Native" but "First nations" and tells me he could suspend me or even expel me for saying Trevor is a native.

Then i asked him this question

"IF i was native would i be up here right now?"

and he says "Probably not" So according to him natives are allowed to say native but us white people are not.

So he gave me garbage duty instead and i had to walk around the school being laughed at.

IS the principle right or am i wrong? Just wanted to know what you guys think.

It depends on the situation. Schools like to say they can suspend you for anything but they really can't. If a black guy was making racial slams on a white guy and it was just give and take you would most likely be fine.I can tellyou we wouldn't be suspended for calling someone a native or an Indian or whatever.

in america we also have an n- word but i think ours is actually offensive because of the history behind it. though i dont know canadian history... exactly why is 'native' offensive?Xeros606

I really don't see whats wrong with saying the word native either there IS no bad histroy behind the word. Its just that lots of white people up here look down on natives as being a bunch of druggys and i guess saying the word is a bad thing.

I was asking other teachers about it and they were all telling me that i was wrong for saying it. Something to do with how in our civilization it just isn't appropriate and i should address them as first nations because thats what they are.

I hate political correctness.

I grew up in NW Wisconsin, surrounded by *clears her throat* Native American (but really..) reservations. Now, I have had some, what I call "indian" friends. They are Indians. native americans. Its not prejudice in any way to call them either. I have talked to a lot of them about it cause i didnt want to offend my friends or their parents lol.

Now when you say that they act 'gangster' like, dont pay certian taxes, and have free college, ect ect... same thing here in the US. A lot of them use their 'powers' and 'immunities' to their greater advantage. Its a dicey system. One time, back when i was in school and my husband was still attending too, he was sitting in class and was confronted by a 'native' we will call "Jerk" and my husband we will call "Victim". Anyhow, Jerk comes up to Victim... they do not get along. In fact are enemies. Jerk calls Victim a "Cracker". Now of course, thats supposed to be offensive to white people, though I dont understand cause i really like crackers. They are tastey. Anyhow, Victim says to Jerk "F'n in'jin". Now you might think Victim might be getting in trouble for using the explotive 'f'n'. But that was not even brought up when he got suspended. He was suspended for saying ' in'jin'. And what happened to Jerk? .... take a guess. NOTHING. I find that repulsive.

But, you are totally correct.. like usual. It is not fair to punish only one when both were -apparently- at a wrong. But perhaps the principal was 'scared' about other reprocussions on HIM for not handling it as such. ie: hand holding leash.
