Almost suspended for racism

So i live in Canada and supposedly up here your not allowed to say the word "native" if your white. Anyways heres the story. I was sitting math class and my friend Trevor comes up to me and calls me white as a butter and i tell him hes brown like a native. Next thing i know the teacher comes up to me tells me to leave class and wait in the hallway for the principle to come and talk to me.

He brings me up to the office and he says I'm not allowed to say the word "Native" but "First nations" and tells me he could suspend me or even expel me for saying Trevor is a native.

Then i asked him this question

"IF i was native would i be up here right now?"

and he says "Probably not" So according to him natives are allowed to say native but us white people are not.

So he gave me garbage duty instead and i had to walk around the school being laughed at.

IS the principle right or am i wrong? Just wanted to know what you guys think.

I don't know if it is justified or not. We see a lot of terrible school related injustices reported here in OT. I don't know the story with this school and the use of that word, nor do I know if the story is being told in an accurate manner.

How is "native" racist:| A relative of mine is native, but he doesn't get offended when he hears people calling him native. And why would anyone take those sub par insults(Assuming they were insults, but they actually weren't)? Your view on justice and fairness seems a little out of this world.Vilot_Hero

I agree that the situation (using the word "native" being considered offensive) is pretty whack, but the part i bolded is the part that bothers me the most. This also happens alot in the black/white threads where sumone will say "if a black person can use the n-word, why can't I, as a white person, use it too!?" What bothers me the most is that it matters to you so much that you have to ask :? Do you want the right to make racist comments? I agree that the native thing is a little out there, but maybe it is offensive, and you shouldnt be annoyed that you arent allowed to insult sumone :(

I agree with him, but the thing that really annoys me is that everyone who makes that arguement, makes it incorrectly. They always say "If black guy X can call me a racist term, Why can't I call him a racist term?" when in reality they shouldnt be fighting for the right to be equally as racist, but they should be fighting to stop both parties from being racist. People make it seem like by not being allowed to be racist they are missing out on sum good stuff. Argue that racism shouldnt exist, not that you should be allowed to be racist too.

Its not what you think that matters, its what he thinks. Now I admit, im not sure about the situation there, but if 'native' is generally regarded as being offensive, you should probably not use it. I mean white people didnt think the n-word or negro was all that offensive, that didnt make it ok for them to use it. And maybe im on crack but where im from butter is yellow :P (or is that margarine? :P)

I only asked my principle "IF i was native THEN would i be up here right now for calling trevor a native" and he said no. Its all about context. If you say you are fat, thats your problem, but when you go around calling other people fat, then its insulting. Same applies here. A first nation (FN) calling another FN by a derogatory term isnt as insulting because he is in turn insulting himself. But you calling a person of a different race a racially offensive term (I dont think "native" is racist, but for arguements sake, lets assume it is) it is insulting because you are effectively seperating yourself from them and calling them a being below yourself.
