I went to see it the first week it came out and did not know what to expect. I came out of the theater impressed by the visuals and liking the message of human consuption. However, I did not think it was amazing or incredible like some people here on GS seem to believe. It was a good film (probably the 2nd or 3rd best I saw in 2009), but not good enough to be one of my favorites of all time. Why was it so amazing?

It was just an action movie, albeit on the grandest, most artistic scale. Great visuals but lacking entirely in substance.

Without the 3d it would have been passable, but I really was immersed, it was the only film I've ever been in where at the end the audience started clapping.

I would've liked it better if it was in 2D in a theatre close to where I live. I happened to sit below a light which was still dimly on and it made viewing things on the screen rather difficult. Plus most of the action scenes gave me slight headaches.

Well I wouldn't have appreciated it if they started clapping in the middle of the film

It's amazing what too much acclaim can do to a movie. It was a good movie and you saw it as such, but because of all of the praise being given to it, you found it to be a disappointment.

I wasn't dissapointed by it, because I did not know what to expect. I was happy that it was good, but it boggles my mind why people think it deserves Academy Awards outside of visuals.

I can't understand it either. Practically confirmed for a Best Picture nomination because of this ridiculous 10 nominations thing. This, along with rumours about The Hangover being nominated, suggests the Academy is going rapidly mainstream (downstream).

Yeah, I really should. The problem is, I feel a general detachment from the medium 99.9% of the time, which makes it hard for me to get into films in general. I highly doubt that would change my opinion of Avatar either.

None of the other best picture nominees are as good as Avatar at entertaining an audience. I really couldn't care less if George Clooney is fantastic in yet another snoozefest of a movie that wins best picture because the voters consider themselves too elite to be enjoying such low-class action movies like Avatar.

Critics just look for different things in movies than the average movie-goer. They aren't necessarily wrong, they just find different things entertaining.

Oh c'mon. Use your head a bit. Its not about being too elite. Its about subtext as much as enjoyment and entertainment. How a film can convey profound messages and meanings in a subtle way. Films aren't just about you sitting there while a fly buzzes into your gob. The nominations aren't even out yet and you're rubbishing the other films? How can you even make a statement if you don't know what the movies are? Wake up to yourself.

I know what the movies are. It's already past 2009 and all the noteworthy films that are likely to get oscar nominations are already out.

I haven't seen it yet...I'm just not interested in it at all. Appears to be a mere visual effects showcase/noexcite
