Am I the only person that wasn't enchanted by Avatar?

I went to see it the first week it came out and did not know what to expect. I came out of the theater impressed by the visuals and liking the message of human consuption. However, I did not think it was amazing or incredible like some people here on GS seem to believe. It was a good film (probably the 2nd or 3rd best I saw in 2009), but not good enough to be one of my favorites of all time. Why was it so amazing?

I haven't seen it.. and to be honest have no desire to see it.

It was just an action movie, albeit on the grandest, most artistic scale. Great visuals but lacking entirely in substance.

Without the 3d it would have been passable, but I really was immersed, it was the only film I've ever been in where at the end the audience started clapping.

Well I wouldn't have appreciated it if they started clapping in the middle of the film

It's amazing what too much acclaim can do to a movie. It was a good movie and you saw it as such, but because of all of the praise being given to it, you found it to be a disappointment.

It was just an action movie, albeit on the grandest, most artistic scale. Great visuals but lacking entirely in substance.

It's amazing what too much acclaim can do to a movie. It was a good movie and you saw it as such, but because of all of the praise being given to it, you found it to be a disappointment.

I can't understand it either. Practically confirmed for a Best Picture nomination because of this ridiculous 10 nominations thing. This, along with rumours about The Hangover being nominated, suggests the Academy is going rapidly mainstream (downstream). biggest_loser

Yeah, I really should. The problem is, I feel a general detachment from the medium 99.9% of the time, which makes it hard for me to get into films in general. I highly doubt that would change my opinion of Avatar either.
