Halo?

LJS9502_basic

Yes, I think it's that guy.

No it's not....at least that's not the user name.

Hmm...like I said, haven't seen him post in ages so I don't remember the name. I know who you're talking about though.

[QUOTE="majoras_wrath"][QUOTE="Planet_Pluto"]Sorry again, but I really don't think I'd know the name even if it was spelled out in front of me. I never had any conversations with him. I just remembered a few times when I saw the same avatar and he was ALWAYS painting the 'bad guys' in the best possible light and all.

Pirate700

Some of the stuff he says really concerns me as he really comes across as a potential homegrown extremist. Almost made a thread in ATM wondering what actions they can take against such really worrisome comments.

You have to remember this is the interwebs though. Everything he says could just be troll BS.

That, and the fact that some things are just free speech have stopped me. I really hope he is a troll. I hope everyone on the internet who claims to support the Taliban and would claim zealous fealty to them in the case of a Caliphate is just trolling, otherwise that is f******* scary.

Maybe on the official al-Qaeda forums, but not typically on a game related forum. :?

The first image that pops into my mind is that of a middle-eastern man. Is that messed up? Maybe to some, but you have to think about where I'm coming from.

Yes and no. I don't think of Arabs particularly, though I usually think of Arabs, Persians and Pashtuns. More accurately I think of Islamic extremists (though I've heard that the majority of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil have been done by animal rights and environmental extremists, though they are usually small scale).

I'll be honest, yes I do. Not that Arabs are terrorists but that the terrorist is from that part of the world. Of course I know they aren't the only terrorists though as they come frome very country on the globe.

Pretty much this. Russia as well tends to have terrorism groups around.

It wasn't untill I moved to Scotland I ever even heard of that drink. It's not called that in Ireland north or south and if you mentioned that they would just look at you or start a fight with you.
Personaly I think it's probably worse than calling a drink something derogetory about 9/11, Madrid or London considering that more people died in the troubles than any of those.

I think of crazy people regardless of race. OKC bomber was white, the DC sniper(s) were black, and the 9/11 attackers were middle eastern. I don't limit my thoughts of a terrorist to one race/ethnicity. I do always think of a terrorist as a male.

The perspective that soldiers are dying for my 'rights' is wrong. That is not what is happening. I have a higher probability of dying numerous other ways than ever dying from an islamic fanatic trying to blow me up.

Honestly, yes. When someone says "terrorist," an image of a bearded mujahideen with an RPK over his shoulder comes to mind. Now, if you actually asked me what a terrorist is, I'd write something like "a non-state actor that uses force or the threat of force to affect political change."

There's interpretations, some more accurate than others, but no 100% clear answer.

Though the most common definition that has been outlined in my political science texts is an act committed by an NGO that is intended to either induce fear or coerce a state to fulfill their demands. This can be expanded to state-sponsored terrorism if the NGO is backed by a specific government and then further expanded to state terrorism if the government itself commits the act.

I do because it's human nature to group memories in your head and associate certain things to other things based on experience. When I look at an Arab, I don't think terrorist, but if you say terrorist, I think of a Muslim. Does that make sense? Kind of like the concentric circles thing where once circle is within another circle. It's only because all of the terrorists I've seen other than McVeigh, have been Muslim. If whites or blacks or hispanics began to be the biggest terrorists, then I would just think anyone, but when most of the terrorists now days are Muslim, it's just nature. I think it's just being overly moral when you say you don't.

Another example is when I think of a racist, I think of either skin heads, white trash, or old white men. I know that there are other types of racists, but that's what I think of because that's what I have experience with. I think it depends on the experiences and observations you've had because you perceive it that way.

We aren't arguing what terrorist groups are Arab, we're discussing what nationality you see when thinking of a terrorists face. Given that the stereotypical terrorist is Arab. An Arab is what you would probably think of.

Or he's not the same age you are, and his memories are more of terrorism in Northern Ireland. I know that's what I think of; my mother was almost killed in one of the only bombings in Dublin. Different people, different experiences. I then think of Arabs and Persians, but that "flash" thought is a stereotypical IRA hitman.

My second thought was Russian. Anyways, I guess you're right but the average [American] stereotype will always be Arab. I'm not American though, my country is highly influenced by the US and it hasn't been touched by terrorism so I just get this idea from American views.

I think you're right, althogh now most americans probably think, "bearded Arab", moving toward the Pakistani end of things. It used to be Libyans, and so forth. I thinjk most of us have a more complex reaction than just one ethnicity, but American media is the big thing around the world, so our stereotypes spread, as you say.
