taking the brutality of the crime committed into account, i'll just say that few people go from 0 to 100 just like that, and few people submit to the cops as peacefully as he did, considering the nature of the crime he committed
i'm guessing he's been warming up to this for years, allowing him to reach a state of mentality where he could be at peace with his nature, and this just happened to be the incident that got him busted. It also looks to me like he tried to preserve parts of his act, whereas the normal response would be to immediately shun evidence of the act, something serial killers tend to regret when reminiscing about their first kill

I think the death penalty would be a release for this guy. Mentally ill or not he deserves to rot in a cell for the rest of his life being tortured by fellow inmates.
