We have to find element zero first.

6_Dead_360s

That would be great, but I would settle for the discovery of the graviton.

Sure..., but this is right up there with the chair you're sitting on turning into a dragon.Frame_Dragger

This is why I mentioned xaos without you. There's a way to correct people without insulting them.

There's probably a reason that my reply wasn't directed you either... I know hopeless when I reasd it. You're not into physics or science in general, you're an incompletely formed crackpot.

[QUOTE="achilles614"]This thread really makes my head hurt. It also makes me sad. I wouldn't dismiss anything completely because we can't tell the future. edit: xaos of framedagger, you guys should to make a thread about physics and educate OT, I for one would be interested.Frame_Dragger
I would strongly recommend www.physicsforums.com if you want to learn about physics, but be warned: READ THE RULES. PF is a place to learn about ESTABLISHED physics only, not anti-grav and the like. Still, you could get a fantastic education there if you wanted to. Beyond that, I'm always happy to chat about physics, but it requires the other end of the conversation be rooted in something like reality.

.

Awesome I'll be digging through that site the next couple of weeks and try to get back to you with some kind of discussion. I am interested in physics but it is an intimidating field. I have a Stephen Hawkings book (brief history of time) floating around in my room somewhere, I should probably read more of that too.

[QUOTE="Frame_Dragger"][QUOTE="TransformerRobo"]

[QUOTE="Jackc8"]

I guess dark energy, which is basically a hypothetical construct to explain the fact that galaxies are expanding away from the center of the universe faster than our current understanding of physics says they should be, could be credited with some sort of anti-gravity, um...power or something. But we've yet to actually detect anything like that, much less collect some or use it for anything.

Far more likely would be a vertical take off / landing type craft, or even some sort of hovercraft, except with vastly more powerful engines that are much smaller than what we've got today.

As far as the whole leaf thing, no. I don't think you could make a vehicle that's strong as steel and yet weighs as little as a leaf. Unless you attached a great big hot air balloon to the top of it.

I've now rejected the leaf thing completely.

All my life I thought gravity was the strongest force in the universe, but then I learned more and more of magnetism.

One idea I had for creating anti-gravity on Earth was to artificially manipulate it's magnetic field so that vehicles with an opposite charge could levitate on it. However, I began to reject such an idea out of fear that artificially toying with Earth's magnetic field would destroy the planet.

Very good point there about dark energy. Let's assume that luminous energy is dark energy's opposite. There's so much luminous energy at the center of the universe, with so much dark energy among the different galaxies, stars, planets, etc. that the 2 forces are repelling each other.

When you think about it, if dark energy isn't the force that would levitate "anti-gravity" vehicles, maybe it would be a field of luminous energy repelled against our own dark energy.

Or is dark matter the opposite of dark energy?

OK, you need to stop posting about what you think is science now.

Well, with all consideration, now I doubt myself that it's anti-gravity we're looking for.

How is that even possible? It's not like the mouse swallowed a magnet with an opposite polarity, right?

TransformerRobo
It's actually quite interesting. From some article "Water is weakly diamagnetic, which means that in the presence of a strong magnetic field the electrons in water rearrange orbit slightly, creating tiny currents in opposition to the external magnetic field." It takes an extremely powerful superconducting magnet to achieve this though. Totally unpractical.

Well I already know that ions have their own charges, so a positively charged cluster of ions would be repelled by a positively charged magnet, right?

MAN. Has anything at all taught any of you ONE BIT OF INFORMATION ?! Do you NOT know that If you can think it you can create it... So YES ANTI-GRAVITY COULD one day, Be used for propelling vehicles slightly off, and along the ground.

I understand the possibility of levitated motor vehicles (aka hovercars and hoverbikes) in the distant future, but what I still don't know is how long it would take to develop, and how would it work without knocking Earth (and/or other planets) off it's orbit or screwing up atmospheric pressure in the sky.

thats the problem. you dont know physics well.

you know some words that are used in physics and blindly matching them together in a method you think is consistent with what the rest of the world calls science. please. stay in school. and go to class.

whether you intended it to be or not. this thread is a joke thread. so it shouldnt be taken seriously. i know youd like to learn but you will not learn anything profound from a few posts on a game forum (though xaos really knows his stuff) you seem to lack the basic understanding of physics required to make anything he or anyone else says hold any weight to you

your level of understanding devolves into someone mentioning hover bikes. and another person mention electromagnetism then suddenly comming to the conclusion that the earth will be thrown off its orbit.....that shows you have a lack of understanding in how the electromagnetic force works, how gravity works. and how orbits are goverened. and thats just one example

Well does that mean I should be continuously belittled for my lack of understanding of physics? Just because somebody's not as smart as you are doesn't mean you get to point and say "Hey everybody, look at the idiot!! He doesn't know what's on the other side of a black hole so he's an imbecile!!". Seriously, I'd much appreciate it if you didn't treat me that way.

You have, as far as I can tell, a vast misunderstanding of a very small amount of physics, and are further hindered by the belief that you know anything about the field. My advice would be to abandon what you think you know, in favor of education from the ground up.

i dont really hold much respect for people who would be offended by a stranger on the internet calling them a dummy as if you need my words to somehow validate your life.

blackacidevil96

I already know my life is valid, I was just trying to get other people's input on scientific development in the distant future.

and i gave my input by letting you know my poop will clog the iss toilets. and to answer your other questions on future research, scientists are aparently reporting clouds eat sunshine and happiness. you claimed knowledge of litereally any level of science is laughable. so i did just that. i laughed

Then why not politely explain where I went wrong instead?

i save my politness for explaining things to coworkers that do something wrong. i couldnt possibly reserve enough for everyone. welcome to the internet. enjoy your stay

also you lack enough basic understanding to support an explanation, so its best to not bother until you recieve and education

I wouldn't be offended if you weren't so blunt about it.

TransformerRobo

Stop feeding him, seriously. You want to get rid of him? Ignore him

I wouldn't if he would stop getting personal. I've been reporting him numerous times but I don't think the moderator is doing anything about it, and he's clearly violating the terms of service.

Are you new to the internet? That's not how you deal with people insulting you :?

How is that even possible? It's not like the mouse swallowed a magnet with an opposite polarity, right?

It's actually quite interesting. From some article "Water is weakly diamagnetic, which means that in the presence of a strong magnetic field the electrons in water rearrange orbit slightly, creating tiny currents in opposition to the external magnetic field." It takes an extremely powerful superconducting magnet to achieve this though. Totally unpractical.

Well I already know that ions have their own charges, so a positively charged cluster of ions would be repelled by a positively charged magnet, right?

Magnets don't have charges, they have poles. North pole repels north and south repels south.

A current (electrons) flowing through a loop of wire will induce a magnetic field. Take your RIGHT hand (always the right hand) and curl your fingers toward your palms and make a fist. Point your thumb upwards. Your fist represents the coil of wire, and the way your curled your fingers represent the direction the current flows through the loop (clockwise or counter clockwise). Your thumb is now pointing in the direction the induced magnetic field will come out of, or in other words, North.

Next, Lenz's Law states that "An induced electromotive force (emf) always gives rise to a current whose magnetic field opposes the original change in magnetic flux.". So what does this mean? Say I have a coil of wire and a long magnet that could fit inside the loop. Say I take the magnet and rapidly push it into the coil. The coil of wire will actually generate a current which opposes the magnet I tried to push into it. It will resist my magnet.

Now for this levitation thing, almost the same thing is happeneing but on a a tiny scale. In the presence of NASA's insanely powerful magnetic field, the electrons in the water molecules in the mouse are full filling Lenz's Law. Remember how I said a current in a loop of wire induces a magnetic field? Well, electrons orbiting an atomic nuclei are also generating a tiny magnetic field known as an "electron spin magnetic dipole moment". So once again, in the presence of NASA's magnetic field, the electrons surrounding each atom (of water) will change their velocities to induce a magnetic Field that opposes the incoming magnetic field, causing levitation.

The problem here is my example with the coil of wire doesn't exactly scale down to the atomic level. Why? Quantum mechanics steps in and things get complicated.

like you said on an quantum level it is overcome by other forces. similar to gravity. it is not hard to create a force strong enough to oppose gravity, for instance a magnet (levitating a trane for instance takes lots of force) but the magnetic for degrades very rapidly with distance. while gravity is a weaker force in general is a weaker force when compared on small scales to other forces. unlike those other forces works over much longer distances, and thus gravity is the large governing force of planetary motion (im just providing more info, not explaining it to you as you seem to know already im sure)

The main reason that gravity dominates over large distances is that it has no charge, so it is purely additive. Electromagnetism and gravity both have an inverse square field strength, but since EM fields has charge/polarity to consider, over larger differences, opposing charges tend to cancel out extremely large scale fields.

i knew there was a reason. but did not know the mechanism. i can do orbits very well, (aerospace eng.) but electromagnetism isnt my strong point
