When I say gifted I mean like academically. Where you have a special class or classes that are only for you and other gifted students. Myself, I spent the entire day at another school on Thursdays in elementary school for gifted, then in middle school I had gifted in place of english and history. I'm not taking any sort of gifted class in high school because I'm tired of being labeled as "the gifted kid". So... after all that rambling, is/was anybody here "gifted"?

I always frowned on the usage of "special" and "gifted", seems so condescending to me. It should be something like..different requirements c lass or something.

Gifted? I'm not sure. When I was in elementary school, my mom used to tell me that my teachers would call me that all the time. And she was so proud. But after a few traumatic experiences and all of middle school I think I lost a lot of drive. I think I stopped caring and I had no motivation to try and do well anymore. Most of my teachers seemed to think I had potential in high school but I always didn't meet their standards because I never really tried. If I could go back, I'd give it my all just to see if anyone was right about me.

I was "gifted" bc of my IQ score. We were separated from the other kids though. Which I didn't like. Most of my friends weren't gifted.

Same for me. One of my best friends is gifted, but all the others aren't. I feel out of place. I understand it means I have great potential, but my expectations are so much higher than everyone else's, sometimes it gets to be too much.

From what I have seen, 1 standard deviation above average IQ does best in college. -they are smart enough (a little above average) -they have also learned how to study and work for grades -some, not all, 'gifted' kids have had that label for so long that they are used to being treated a certain way, getting certain privileges, etc

I have a pretty high IQ (like 147 or something, can't remember exactly) but that really doesn't mean much. A high IQ doesn't do much if you can't apply it to anything.

I never got perticularly high grades before College because I hated school/was lazy so I was never put in any special classes except AP.

I hate the term "gifted." If I had a nickel for every kid that thought he was superior because he was called gifted... Well, I'd have a few nickels, but holy crap does it do a number on the ego.dreDREb13

Yeah, I really dislike the term gifted. I'm glad my high school doesn't offer a specific gifted program, just honors and AP courses. I do still meet with with gifted teacher from middle school, however, to discuss college options.

I was certainly not implying all (I know you guys got that, but just clarifying) I have known plenty that did really well in college (and beyond) There are just ones that were 'spoiled' (for lack of a better word) by parents, family, educators, etc. -being told you are better/how great you are from an early age can warp a kid's sense of reality and their place in the world. A lot of things (both positive and negative) are labeled on kids too early in life

After a certain point (like a 110 IQ) its more about your situation and how you apply yourself then your actual "potential". An IQ test isn't a very good representation of how capable you are, just how good you are at solving very linear problems, nothing to do with creativity or dealing with other people, which is just as, or more important.

Could you specifiy further? This year (10th grade) I'm in Cambridge classes and dual enrolled at a local community college. Does that make me gifted? Because it was more or less hard work that got me there.

I was never in the gifted program despite having been tested twice for it. Reason for that being that I purposefully failed every gifted admissions test since I saw that gifted kids got more homework and I didn't want that :P For what it's worth though, I currently go to a top 20 university, am majoring in neuroscience with a 3.78 GPA, and am getting ready to publish some research I've been doing for the past two years as a first author (which will doubtlessly net me summa cum laude graduation honors when I present my honor's thesis).

When I was younger (1st grade to be exact), my school was going to enter me into their gifted classes. By gifted I mean the advanced classes, not the remedial. I changed schools the next year, though, and they didn't have any such programs at my new school :(. Sometimes I wonder where I'd be today if I had been placed in the gifted program.

Yeah, I am. I took an IQ test in elementary school to determine whether I was 'intelligent' enough to be included in the district's gifted program, and I passed with an abnormally high IQ score. From then on, people tended to expect more from me when it came to academics. However work ethic and intellect are not exactly correlated. :P

I mean like when you were younger, you took a test where you had to score in something like the 98th percentile I believe, and if you passed you got accepted into the "gifted" community. In my opinion, anybody can be "gifted" if they apply themselves. Like you, for instance.

I've taken lots of honors and AP courses and was involved in the Scholars Course of Study. nothing labeled "gifted".
