What do you think? I often hear this from the christian right that theyre being persecuted, that their rights are being taken away. Sometimes its vague, othertimes they outright say it.

I dont think they are, but what do you think?

 I guess if making it fairer for those who aren't Christian means they are being persecuted then yes, their rights are being taken away,.

Eh, they likely feel they are in some ways, such as not being able to vote on EVERYTHING that opposes their religious beliefs...or any time some minor news story comes out about someone badmouthing Christianity, or in the recent Prop 8 trial, etc. But it's mostly unfounded and/or exaggerated.

They probably feel that we are going against christianity by instilling separation of church and state I would think. What I don't understand is why Christians feel that God must be present in Government. What does God have to do with politics and government? How would it make things better?

My whole family are good Christians, they have been their whole lives, but even they feel that there should be a clear cut line between religion, and everything else.

Not really. Maybe somewhere down the line it'll happen if Christians somehow become a minority, but not as it stands.

There were a number of church burnings in Norway, though, years ago.

Some consider themselves persecuted because they arn't allowed to hang their scriptures in government buildings or someone tells them they shouldn't be able to force the government to make laws based on biblical law. If you consider them persecuted, every other religion has it about 10 times worse.

In my opinion, no. They get preferencial treatment in society and their religion is freely allowed to trample over the seperation of church and state to the point where it no longer exists.

If by "rights" they mean their "right" to shove their beliefs down other people's throats then, yes, probably. But then again, there is no mention of those specific "rights" in the Constitution. (please note: I am specifically referring to the extreme right and not Christians in general, just the outspoken few who believe that they are correct and everyone else is wrong).

The internet really needs a proper sarcasm emoticon.clubsammich91

Athiests are being persecuted way more then Christians are.

no, they took religion out of schools and now teach atheistic ideas to kids. If anything it's the christian ideas and beliefs that are being persecuted in that case. The people aren't getting persecuted, it's their religion that is.

I don't recall being taught any "atheistic ideas" in school.

I also recall there were three different Christian clubs on my high school campus. And a very large portion the choral music that we sang was Christian music.

There is a reason for that... the United States is not a Christian country, it is a secular country that allows for freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Teaching one religion in school violates the children's right to hear every perspective and make a decision for themselves. They are free believe in whatever they want, and filling their heads with a single belief system isn't fair to all the other belief systems out there.

Teaching that your god made everything wouldnt be science. what about nonchristians? is it ok to "persecute them" seeing as your idea of persecution means being told a creation story that isnt what you believe?

thank you for that. I think you helped proved my point here. The United States was once a christian country. It shut down on Sundays so people could go to church. Now, they are basically persecuting the religion, even teaching kids other ideas, which would have been unheard of 100 years ago. That's why I think Christianity, as a religion, is being persecuted. Soon to be replaced by a new religion called "Atheism".

those "scientific ideas" like evolution and the big bang theory have no more evidence than creationism. Believing that we all came from green algae could be considered a religious idea as much as the belief that God created the earth is.

Nope. Never was. The Declaration of Independence was signed by a bunch of deists who wished to escape from theocracy. It is a secular nation that wishes to remain open to all people from all walks of life... and the Constitution is what upholds this ideal.

Not really. Most of the Founding Fathers were Christians. Franklin was a Deist, and Jefferson was a borderline case, but they were predominantly Christian. Adams did, however, say that it was not a Christian nation, and indeed, the philosophies behind the founding of the country were more based on the ideals of Rationalism than on more explicitly Christian movements.

hate to say it, but you are actually wrong there. The US was founded on christian principles and values. Now, there is nothing christian about this country, and people are trying their best to keep it that way. Which is why I think christian beliefs are being persecuted. You can even see it in this thread. I don't think I need to post anymore.

Teaching one religion in school violates the children's right to hear every perspective and make a decision for themselves. They are free believe in whatever they want, and filling their heads with a single belief system isn't fair to all the other belief systems out there.

thank you for that.

The US was never a christian country.

If we started teaching christian beliefs as fact, wouldn't that mean every other religion but christianity was being persecuted? So it's okay to persecute religion as long as it isn't yours?

Nope. Never was. The Declaration of Independence was signed by a bunch of deists who wished to escape from theocracy. It is a secular nation that wishes to remain open to all people from all walks of life... and the Constitution is what upholds this ideal.

hate to say it, but you are actually wrong there. The US was founded on christian principles and values. Now, there is nothing christian about this country, and people are trying their best to keep it that way. Which is why I think christian beliefs are being persecuted. You can even see it in this thread. I don't think I need to post anymore.

what principles and values was this country founded on? Not killing?? No theft etc? These are present in countries that have no christian history

[QUOTE="mohfrontline"] no, they took religion out of schools and now teach atheistic ideas to kids. If anything it's the christian ideas and beliefs that are being persecuted in that case. The people aren't getting persecuted, it's their religion that is.mohfrontline

There is a reason for that... the United States is not a Christian country, it is a secular country that allows for freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Teaching one religion in school violates the children's right to hear every perspective and make a decision for themselves. They are free believe in whatever they want, and filling their heads with a single belief system isn't fair to all the other belief systems out there.

.. No people still worked on Sunday's they had to in both agrarian and industrial societies.. Atheism isn't a religion, and the big bang, and evolution is not athiestic either.. The Catholic church under the Pope accepts evolution they are most certainly not athiest......
