With their transaction fee's and membership charges, do you think they are a ripoff? Wouldn't it be easier to carry money around instead? What are your thoughts of credit cards?

If you have a credit card with transaction fee's and membership charges you are using a weird ass credit card. I use a Discover that's free and I earn like $7 a month. Just make sure you pay your god damn balance so you don't get charged with interest.

The world runs on debt, so no, credit is what keeps the economy expanding. Credit allows individuals to purchase things they would otherwise not be able to afford. Paying interest on credit is not only morally sound, but it is what expands economies, banks, and businesses. I have three credit cards and manage almost great credit using all of them. Think of the word, credt: what does it mean? It's an account of your responsibility, more specifically but not limited to, financial responsibility. How much can the banks trust you?

Paying interest on credit is not only morally sound, but it is what expands economies, banks, and businesses. lo_Pine

Uhh, no.

I'll stick to paying $50, for a $50 item.
Have fun spending $55, because you didn't use cash.

Not really.

Before they had a sea of hidden fees, charges, and interest hikes to trap customers in a dept trap.

Laws have defanged them allot though.

They still are an ineffecient money despensing device, but they are useful.

You get charged for what you use.

You only pay interest if you don't completely pay off your credit at the end of the month. I have a credit card and I have never payed interest for anything. Just make sure you can pay your balance instead of the minimum every month.

Depends. This is the card I have. If you click on "Terms and Conditions" (bottom left in blue) and ctrl + f "avoid" you'll find: "How to Avoid Paying Interest on Purchases: Your due date is at least 25 days after the close of each billing period (at least 23 days for billing periods that begin in February). We will not charge you any interest on purchases if you pay your entire balance by the due date each month."

No annual fee, no monthly fee, no transaction fee, 5% cash back on rotating categories, 1% cash back on all other purchases. I've only had it for a few months now, earn about $6 to $8 a month. But I'm a student still living with parents working part time so if you're working full time living on your own your cash back bonus is gonna be bigger.

I actually just applied for a credit card. No fee and I get 4 free movie tickets with it once I make a purchase. That's 2 free dates, awesomesauce. I plan to use it to just spend small amounts and pay back right away, that way I'll have awesome credit and can get a mortgage whenever I want.

Yea, pretty much this. I don't think I'll be using mine for the next 6-7 years though. Need to pay back my loans for all my medical expenses from earlier this year.

And, there are (at least here in Canada) debit cards that work as credit cards anywhere besides Canada. It makes the question "debit or credit" a kick in the crotch if it wasn't already one for retail workers, people don't even know what card they have in their hands anymore.

Credit cards are great if you are responsible and terrible if you are irresponsible. One of my cards offers between a five and 20 cent discount per gallon on gas depending on the date. As long as I pay the card in full so the interest doesn't kick in I save a few bucks a month on gas. There are other cards with similar perks.

Yes, young men and women just graduating from high school will probably get screwed since they lack credit. But getting that credit card and building a good history over a few months could be the difference between a few interest points while looking for your first car.

They're not ripping anybody off because they tell you what the interest charges and fees will be up front. If you use credit cards responsibly they're quite convenient. It's the other 90% who use them irresponsibly that create a problem for themselves.

I use my credit card to buy expensive goods when I have no money. It's great because then I don't have to worry about paying for it for another 10 years.

Maybe not a rip-off but I prefer using my debitcard, If I'm out of money, I can't buy the item I intend to buy, and I am in no debt whatsoever.

Use a credit card every now and then. Mostly when buying things online. 40 or 45 days here before the interest rates starts running. Paying it all back at the end of the month is no problem for me.

As long as you treat a credit card as a convenience, buy only what you can afford, and pay them off every month so you have no interest payments then they are awesome.

If you are some douche who can't do simple math or can't control yourself then credit cards are not for you. However, if you fall in that category you are pretty much guaranteed to fail at life anyway.

Usually, at some point in your life you're going to need more money than you actually have. Things like emergencies pertaining to medical issues, your car, or your home. So, unless you save very well, you'll need credit at some point or you'll have to go without.

There are no transaction fees on the consumer, and I don't have any kind of membership fee on any of my cards.

Sounds like you don't know much about credit cards, TC.

I'm cautious about credit cards but I wouldn't call it a rip off I just got my debit card a year ago and I'm trying to not go below 100. Even if there are things I want to buy, I just hold off I don't see the point to having a credit card (at least for me)

they are not a rip off if you use them properly, I haven't established credit yet but in the long run when I do and I buy something and pay it back within that month and I keep doing that, in the long run when I want to buy a car or a house then having a great credit score helps out because if you have a great score you don't have to put down a down payment. Also some employers look at your credit score to see if your a responsible, so having a crappy score can keep you from getting a job.

Think what you must. I am not gonna argue with ua over it. Just tell everyone how great they are when a retailer charges you a fee for using a debit card for a small transaction (under $10 and I have seen places where that is happening now).

Bingo. There are plenty of credit cards out there that pay you for using it by the way of money back or points or whatever else.

No you get cash back and air miles and all that good stuff, it's cheaper in the long run. If you pay on time and are responsible there's no reason not to use a credit card. Only situation you don't use a credit card is when you're buying <$30 or you're buying from a small business.
