Yeah, it's America speak English but a LARGE portion of America speaks Spanish as well. Are you even trying to learn the language of the people who do a great deal of work here? especially those of you who live in California.
I've taken 4 years of Spanish so I know how to communicate pretty well.

No, not really. If they don'twant to learn english that's their problem. And they don't. They are just here to earn some money to send back home. They have no intrest in putting in the effort to learn to communicate.
Spanish (the language) can burn in the crimson flames of hell for all i care......I'm learning Japanese and C++ninjutsuwarrior
i heard japanese was hella hard to learn
I'm in the UK. We don't even get that many Spanish tourists, let alone people who live here. The language would be useless to me, and I've never bothered learn it.
But having said that, I do study Latin and Ancient Greek..... not one dead language, but two, heh. But I only do that because I enjoy it.
I did learn French for a while, but don't remember enough anymore to actually talk to a French person. Oh well. Not planning to go to France in the near future.

i would ask the same question to the mexicans and other foreigners, are they even trying to learn english??? Your question is too one sided :P
Yeah no. If I plan on going to Mexico or Spain I'll speak spanish, if they are here they can speak english.Yeah, it's America speak English but a LARGE portion of America speaks Spanish as well. [QUOTE="whos_next000"]No. It's a free country, dammit. We can speak whatever language we want and so can they.gamerfan11
It's about knowing how to understand and communicate with others around you who speak different languages.
Language can be later used as a tool when getting good jobs...
And I'm taking spanish lessons right now :D
no because america is MY country and if someone comes here they better adapt to MY rules
if a large group of white americans went to mexico, and essentially forced the citizens there to learn english you liberals would have a hissy fit. America = English language wether its official or not
you come here, you play by OUR rules.

in my experience, I've encountered very few situations in which I have actually needed to understand Spanish-speaking people. It's typically them who have initiated contact with me in an attempt to ask me for something. if I can't understand them, it usually tends to be their loss, not mine.
Now, that's not to say that I have a problem with them speaking exclusively Spanish. I just don't care. If that's working out for them, good for them. But I'm not going to go out of my way to understand them when I get by just fine as it is.
Why did you bump a 9 month old thread?Non, je vis au Canada et je parle le francais et l'anglais, :P I'm also trying to learn Japanese.

[QUOTE="Sajedene"]No. Last time I checked, this is America and the language that is spoken here is English.

internationalism ftw.
When I go to Mexico, I will not speak english but speak whatever Spanish I can to communicate. When I go to Japan - I will not speak english but whatever Japanese I know. When I go to the Philippines, I will not speak english but whatever Filipino I know.
You getting my point?
So why is it, that I - living here in the U.S. - have to learn a language that is spoken by someone from another country - when it is they that come here? Why is that every other Nationality that comese to the US makes the effort to learn english but when it comes to Spanish it is the other way around?
