Are you automatically a racist for not liking rap?

There was a black guy sitting next to me on the bus today. He was blasting rap music out of his Ipod, and, for a second, took his earphones out. I asked him politely to turn it down. I said: "Could you please turn that down, I don't like that kind of music." He stood up.

"Racist."

Racist! He calls me a racist! He walks to the back of the bus, leaving the last traces of out conversation with him calling me a racist!

Is that true? Am I a racist for not liking rap?

Anyway, the guy is an idiot. Not for being black (obviously), but thinking that a style of music is tied to any one race. Is Eminem black?

Certainly not. Hip hop is not driven by a race-- it's driven by a culture. Anyone is open to take part in the musical side of it. Ten seconds of research is enough to show you that not all rappers are black.

A softer approach would've been to say, "Could you please turn that down a bit, it's a little too loud." Instead of saying that "you don't like that kind of music", you would've gotten a better, less defensive, response from him. Not saying you deserved to be a racist, because what he did is just stupid, but everyone has a right to listen to whatever they want, and (where's it's permissible) whenver they want. If the noise bothers you, then fine, you can ask someone to turn it down but just because you don't like it you want them to turn it down is pretty much asking for someone to get annoyed.

Nope. You're racist if you don't like rap solely because a person of a certain ethnicity is performing it. But disliking the music for its musical attributes has nothing to do with race.

if it was a white guy bumping rap, would you say the same thing? or a white guy bumping rock, country would you say "turn it down i like that music"? i doubt it, therefore your a stone cold racist, the quicker you admit it, the quicker we can all move along. If those characteristics describe yourself, it does not matter. It is not as if all Black rap listeners like us act like that, we should not have to apologise for one guy.
