There was a black guy sitting next to me on the bus today. He was blasting rap music out of his Ipod, and, for a second, took his earphones out. I asked him politely to turn it down. I said: "Could you please turn that down, I don't like that kind of music." He stood up.
"Racist."
Racist! He calls me a racist! He walks to the back of the bus, leaving the last traces of out conversation with him calling me a racist!
Is that true? Am I a racist for not liking rap?

Iron Maiden wins. That is all.
Black people are way to sensitive :( It seems like everyone has to have their same taste if not you are racist :SSolid_TangoThis is a racist statement.. however. It's an assumption of a entire group of people based off one persons actions.
...no. I mean do you really think all black people like rap? Really could you imagine Obama, or Morgan Freeman playing loud rap music? I don't think so
A softer approach would've been to say, "Could you please turn that down a bit, it's a little too loud." Instead of saying that "you don't like that kind of music", you would've gotten a better, less defensive, response from him. Not saying you deserved to be a racist, because what he did is just stupid, but everyone has a right to listen to whatever they want, and (where's it's permissible) whenver they want. If the noise bothers you, then fine, you can ask someone to turn it down but just because you don't like it you want them to turn it down is pretty much asking for someone to get annoyed.

"Could you please turn that down, I don't like that kind of music."
If someone asked me that on a bus I would tell them to shut the **** up and move.
If you would have left out the "I don't like that kind of music" part I think you would have gotten a much better response.
a lot of black guys seem to have figured out that shouting racist has a much better chance of getting them what they want than just giving in.... some 7th grader that follows one of my friends around called me a racist for not giving him a cookie when i don't even know the stupid little kid.
Dude's Black and is a rap listener acting straightup stupid. I'm embarrassed just knowing that much.[QUOTE="tbone29"]

I don't get apologising for other peoples behaviour.

If those characteristics describe yourself, it does not matter. It is not as if all Black rap listeners like us act like that, we should not have to apologise for one guy.
Oh alright, got ya :P
No but I would have been like "Why are you touching me?" You don't just grab an earbud off of someone.

No, you are not a racist for not liking rap. HOWEVER,
You should have asked him to turn it down because it was loud enough for you to hear it. Your personal feelings about the type of music it was should have been left out.

Pretty much what I said.
He's the racist. Why does everything have to be about race with those sort of people? Its because of people like him that racism continues. There was a black guy sitting next to me on the bus today. No, its not racist, but if you had no idea about the genre, or what some of it is actually about, then it could be classified as judging a book by its cover.
Wouldn't you be mad if someone told you to turn down whatever music you were listening to because they don't like it? Who says someone should be able to regulate what volume your ipod is at based on what they think of your music...I dont think you were racist but I think that you were very rude.
harperseth
I wouldn't say he was very rude however I do agree. I wouldn't mind being asked to turn down my music but if they also commented on the music I was listening to I'd be a little annoyed.
Sounds like he is the racist and a rude idiot for blasting his music. Note to everyone who does this: Not everyone wants to hear the crap you listen to. That goes for car stereos and talking on cell phones with speaker phone. Your not that important. Sorry, big pet peeves of mine.

The one blaring the music is rude. It's for personal enjoyment, not for everyones enjoyment. Turn it down a bit and everyone is happy. How is someone else rude for asking him to turn it down regardless of his taste in music?
