What really surprises me, is the people who subjectively believe the bible.
This means: they pick and choose parts of the bible to believe.
Now, don't get me wrong, the bible is a great book... a great fiction.
It has some good virtues in it and some good morals to learn, but in no way is this book conveying any factual truths.
Lets start with the biggest mis-conception.
The Bible was written by "god".
Now, if the bible was written by god, and god is supposidly (by judao-christian beliefs) all loving and all caring, then please explain to me the story of noah and the ark. God kills all humanity and forces Noah to save 2 animals of each? This obviously prooves one of two things. Ither your "god" is evil, or he didn't write this and it is a lie. (If you don't think this one story is enough to proove "god's" evilness or the bible being a lie, look up the story of the Tower of Babel, and other such ridiculousness).
Now lets move on, because you guys won't believe that "god" is evil, we'll say that the bible wasn't written by him, and instead man.
Well now, if the bible was written by man, then obviously it is not perfect by any means.
Lets now consider your beliefs.... If this was written by a man, why would he write it? What would he have to gain...?
The simple answer.
CONTROL.
The Judao-Christian Religions were created to control society, to get them to live as the rulers seen fit.
Think about this, if you didn't have forensics, or any kind of science to catch theives, murders, liers and sexual deviants, what could you do?
EASY, you live in a time when people believe anything you throw at them!
So you make up a belief, and in this belief, you craft those things you do not want them doing into the 10 Commandments.
To seal it all, you make the first, "You must believe this."
Now... Wait, how does that stop anything? Simple in your belief if you break any of these rules, YOU GO TO HELL.
Hell? Whats Hell?
Oh, just this place where you suffer burn and choke and scream and cry and live in eternal torture and agony.
Perfect way to control the masses.
and if you don't believe me that Religion has been used to control the masses, look at fundamentalist Muslims, or the Crusades, or when King James re-wrote the bible.
The funniest thing of it all is. Millions of people still believe this outdated form of control, and its gone so far, that its almost drilled into humanity. These old agendas from Roman Emperors and Medieval Kings, still controlling the 21st Century, its hillarious if you ask me.
Some quotes to end this off.
"What is it the Bible teaches us? - raping, cruelty, and murder. What is it the New Testament teaches us? - to believe that the Almighty committed debauchery with a woman engaged to be married, and the belief of this debauchery is called faith."
[Thomas Paine]
"It will not do to investigate the subject of religion too closely, as it is apt to lead to infidelity."
[Abraham Lincoln]
"The Bible has noble poetry in it... and some good morals and a wealth of obscenity, and upwards of a thousand lies."
[Mark Twain]"Religion only serves to bring one truth of humanity to light, history repeats itself, where history is the idiocy of man."
[Rifkin]

We still can't be sure because while most of them remember nothing, some claim to have gone to an afterlife. And its not just Christians who have these near-death experiences, all religions have followers who claim to have gone to that particular religion's afterlife (well, excluding the ones that don't really have an afterlife).

And people claim to have been abducted by aliens. Just because they say things doesn't mean they are true.
Also, it would be quite impossible for you to "retain memory" of such events, as your brain ceases to be working if you are dead, and no memories of such can be stored.
Your Argument = Fail.

It was as though it never happened, which makes me think that there'll be some kind of switch from death to 'something' else. Even if there are millions of years in between, it'll happen instantly.NDEs are caused by oxygen deficiency in the brain; you are still somewhat alive--hence why it is called "near death."And people claim to have been abducted by aliens. Hey, I don't buy into the afterlife either and science has shown what causes NDEs. I'm just saying, we can't rely on people who technically died for a minute or two and then came back to life since they have wildly conflicting stories. Most don't remember a thing. Some think they saw god. As a result personal accounts of death aren't reliable (NDEs are, in a manner of speaking, the last dream you'll ever have).

Sorry, I know your just trying to defend your position, but I'm just showing you that the idea of NDE's are ridiculous.
I'm not very religious but Atheists are so arrogent. Why do they always have to tout their Atheism? Whenever I talk to one of them they always have to relate conversations to their atheism. Why is that? You never here Catholic people relating every single conversation to Jesus...People here on GS even state that they are Atheists in their signatures. Oooh, your so special, please teach me the ways of the Atheist!I mean cmon... :roll:Myrkan
Obviously you've never heard of Priests, Nuns, Popes, Johovah Witnesses, Rabi's, Chaplains and Spiritual Leaders.
Please think before you post such ignorance.

Its not just the atheists. And I have been in conversations with Christians where for some inexplicable reason they feel the need to bring up their beliefs and start preaching. And they're even worse about it than atheists. When was the last time you had an atheist come up to your door at 8:00 in the morning and try to convert you?
The movie itself is mediocre, and does not deserve all the attention its been getting.
However, the main reason why people are up in arms is NOT that it supports athiesm. Anyone who says that does not know what they are talking about. However, the villainous organization in the movie/books DOES have a high degree of correlation with the medieval church.
I just love how either parties on here, Christians and Atheists alike, both feel a need to denigrate each other for their beliefs. Makes for great comedy.... And spelling/grammar errors.bigdcstile
Welcome to OT.
I'm not very religious but Atheists are so arrogent. Why do they always have to tout their Atheism? Myrkan
Because Christians are extremely sensative to criticism. And it's nothing but hilarity to watch them react the way they do to people who simply find their beliefs absurd. But hey, some Christians have actually gone as far as to claim they are being "oppressed."
Whenever I talk to one of them they always have to relate conversations to their atheism. Why is that?
Clearly, the issue is not with atheism but with the attitudes of the people you are talking with. This is what annoys me about Christians, they think everything opposing or just not in aggreance with their beliefs is some of active institution that is unified in a grand conspiracy against them.
You never here Catholic people relating every single conversation to Jesus..
Like hell you don't. A lot of Catholics like to bring up Jesus or God or some kind of Holy this and that during aget together or party. Just because someone doesn't say "Jesus" in every conversation doesn't mean they aren't obsessed.
.People here on GS even state that they are Atheists in their signatures. Oooh, your so special, please teach me the ways of the Atheist!I mean cmon...
And their are just as many people on GS who have signatures themed towards Christianity. What's the problem?

That's just as ignorant of a statement as an atheist saying that all Christians believe in God only because they fear hell. Atheists aren't self loathing, vengeful people they just choose a different way of looking at the world.

I'm an atheist, and I don't feel any spite for Christians, religion just isn't a big deal in my family, and by the time I was old enough to consider it on my own I didn't see any reason to believe it and convert. And it would be very hard for me to feel spiteful towards God, because...well...you know... I don't believe in him.
