I'm Catholic and i have nothing against atheists. I don't post here much but i do view forums very often and i see all of the atheists forums. I think it is not right to be atheists and celebrate Christmas. If you atheists thats fine but its kind of hypocritical to celebrate Christmas. Thoughts?

Yes we do as a matter of fact. Here's a sighting of a couple of atheists celebrating Christmas:

Actually, I do celebrate Christmas, but I only do it because my family does so. I also say grace at dinner and both of my parents knows I'm not religious.

There's a difference between celebrating Christmas and that being one of the few times in the year where your entire family can get together, that's what I celebrate.

I'm agnostic and I celebrate it. Christmas is a pretty secular holiday now. Not many people view it only as the celebration of the birth of Christ.

Well I'm sure atheists do celebrate it. Although it's labeled as a religious holidy, all it is is a secular holidy like all the others.

I celebrate the holidays, and use traditions from other cultures, but not the birth of Jesus. Like the Christmas Tree is not a Christian tradition (originally) so i use it.

Considering the fact that Christmas has turned into a holiday of commerce rather than a christian one, it is perfectly fine for an atheist to celebrate it. I see your point though.

Christmas started out as a pagan festival, why are you celebrating it?

Oh course, there's nothing remotely religious about Santa Claus, exchanging gifts and putting up Christmas trees. It's no more religious than thursday (Thor's day). Besides, the celebrations long outdate christianity, the vatican merely renamed the existant pagan holidays to ease conversions and slapped Christ's name on it despite the date having zero significance to either his birth or any other part of his life.

Yes, mostly do to the fact that my family celebrates it. But Christmas has been commercialized to the point where it has lost its original meaning. Now it's basically a time where people get together and exchange gifts.

No it didn't. While several Christmas traditions originate from pagan practices, the celebration in itself is of Christian origin.

Yeah but it falls on a time of Pagan celebration...it just took over, making it easier for Pagans being converted :P

I celebrate it. It is a commercial holiday to me, much like halloween or valentines day. The religious theme is barely present anymore. Santa is a more known figure for christmas than Jesus.

Yeah. It isn't really religious for our family, it's just a time to get together, exchange gifts, eat dinner and have a good time.

I'm agnostic and I celebrated it for the first time this past Christmas with friends and family. There weren't any religious celebrations or anything, and we didn't sing any songs or anything like that. We just ate, talked, and exchanged gifts. So, it's like it wasn't a Christian holiday at all.

You don't need need to be religious to celebrate Christmas, I celebrate it for the holiday, the family unity, and of course the gifts. I wonder how many Christians actually go to church on Christmas.

Christ + Mass = Christmas. How is that not related to Jesus?

Jesus' birthday was not on December 25th. In fact, the Bible doesn't give the date of his birth, so we don't know it.

That's like a pagan saying "I think it's not right for those who celebrate Christmas religiously to use the pagan rituals that they do to do it"

Christmas has taken on a life of it's own. Atheists don't elebrate it because it is a celebration of Christ. They celebrate it because it is a time of happiness and well being where entire families can get together once a year and exchange gifts.

Christmas was originally a Pagan winter festival where you celebrated the season. It's Christianity that has added the "birth or Christ" into Christmas later on. I celebrate it because Christmas is the day where you celebrate the friendship and relationship between your relatives and friends aswell as being extra nice towards strangers.

i celebrate saturnicus, the heathen holiday of family unity and gift giving where they lit a fire around the base of an evergreen tree and exchanged gifts which christmas was scheduled over to help convert the heathens.... it's much awesomer, since the traditional dinner is a whole calf or lamb.

Of course, and everyone knows it was the Winter Solstice before, and the early Church morphed it into Christ's birthday to help with conversion (and cut down on the weeklong party that was the pagan holiday). It's as much a tradition as anything else. I was raised in a Christian home and still love Christmas, it's probably my favorite holiday. The spirit of giving and being with family is great. Regardless of your beliefs now (that is if Christmas was something you always celebrated) I see no need to stop if you don't want to.
