Atheists smarter than theists?

atheists are not smarter than theists, just that the more education (formal and self taught) one goes through, the less likely they are to be a theist, or at least follow a personal god.  That much is evident, but proposing it backwards is just silly

On average? I bet they do. Masses are religious, while atheism is a small niche of society, existing mostly well educated ones. This severly skews the research though. You would need to compare atheists vs theists in the very same social groups (education, wealth, position etc) to see if being theist or atheist is connected to intelligence.

This is statistically true, with Judaism being the only exception, but as the article notes it doesn't really mean anything conclusive about whether religion is correct or not.

probably because there aren't too many atheists in Pakistan, and the few that are would be scared to come out.

Skewed results. Atheism as it stands today is a niche population existing in a small percent of the total population. Spreading mostly in colleges and academic settings. This results is that this percentage of atheists are better educated then Christians overall, which exists in a huge chuck of the population. For an accurate result of whether religion or atheism effects education level and intelligence you would have to test this from the same socioeconomic and cultural area. I would imagine the results then would be very similar. ferrari2001

Well, you can't broadly say that all theists are dumber than atheists. But their is in fact a correlation between increased religiosity and decreased intelligence. The statistical maps on poor education, violent crime, abortion, divorce, teen pregnancy all paint a damning picture for the South of the USA, where religion (in this case Christianity) is dominant amongst the population. Those same states are also welfare states that take in more money from the federal government than they send in.Randolph

This changes nothing, and it's not exactly true. 

People who recieve an education are more likely to see through the whole religion thing, but I know plenty of stupid atheists and intelligent theists.

Theism certainly seems like it would be appealing to the intellectually lazy... way less homework involved, and only one required reading on the subject.

itt.. atheists try to use this study as evidence for the superiority of their beliefs, theists try to denounce the study as hogwash.

There are idiots on both sides of the aisle. What irks me most, however, is theists who don't know their shit. It's been a revelation to many people when I've told them The Bible wasn't written in English. I mean, come on...if you know that little about your faith, you have no business using it to condemn others.
