As of Wednesday, the 3D epic has reportedly notched $1.14 billion in worldwide grosses, topping previous No. 2 "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King." The film is only the fifth ever to top the $1 billion mark.

"Avatar's" prolific run has occurred over a mere three weeks, leaving the hefty record of "Titanic" still potentially in its sights.

Pretty impressive.

I fully expected this film to fall short in recuperating its outlandish budget. I was wrong.

I've seen it twice. Even though the story DOES leave something to be desired (Avatar 2 please?), the innovation of the visuals, the amazing action sequences, and the breathtaking landscapes make it a trip FAR worth taking.

Return of the King is soooooooo much better than avatar its not even funny. Avatar kinda had a generic plot and everything was predictable as hell. It so does not deserve that place.

The rest of the world seems to disagree or else they'd have stopped buying tickets after three weeks. Return of the King has about an hour of good footage in it and the rest is drawn out boredom.

Like the movie or not, you have to give it some respect. Cameron now is credited with the two most highest grossing movies of all time.

I'm not trying to say Avatar is better film than Return of the King by any means. I'm just saying I enjoyed Avatar moreso than it. I've never been into Lord of the Rings really (the books OR the movies).

I agree with Mystic.. I thought Return of the King was the worse of the series.. The movie did not know when to end and consistently tricked the viewer at least 2 to 3 times by going black for a few seconds and coming back.. Furthermore the battle sequence was quite lame with horses some how being able to run through a mile thick of guys.. Very little of the movie to me felt was outside that battle, which is bad when the battle it self was extremely lame.. I thought the Fellowship of the Ring movie was way better..

I honestly hope he doesn't.. I loved Avatar and all, but I seriously want to see a REAL Terminator sequel by him, technology is not a limitation now like it was with T2 in 94.. I could only imagine how amazing he would make judgement day look..

I find that pretty insulting.. I enjoyed the movie immensely, outside art direction I really never marveled over the cgi.. TO be honest every movie out there with cgi effects looks greats, if your watching the movie for that then you might as well play a video game instead.. Furthermore the top critics are all loving it, people like Ebert who review movies for aliving..

I think he means just the familiarity of the story in general which I actually agree with. If it is going to be a trilogy, I fully hope James Cameron is going to take this breathtaking world he's created and send it to new heights.

Not that it had any plot twists but its not like someone could've predicted the entire movie in the first 5 minutes like in Avatar. I mean, the scene where Faramir was leading his troops to Osgiliath and certain death.... that was amazing! It wasn't necessarily surprising, but still unpredictable.

I'm so goddamn tired of every single plot point the movie had, and practically every other movie does its story better. The plot is terrible - deal with it.

I can't help but point out that some of the best movies of all time including sci-fi classics like Star Wars were never unique in their overall plotline.. The vast majoroty of fantasy and sci-fi use age old story archtypes to tell their story, very rarely do you see a movie ever deviate from that.

Well if you go into a movie with this mindset, you're not going to like it at all. Go in with an open mind, having an opinion on the movie this negative before seeing it probably won't change your mind.

Ha ha now that made me lol. :D It is basically a retelling of Pocahontas. It's also a symbol of our Manifest Destiny ideals when driving the Native Americans off their holy lands and onto reservations.

I am no fan of the plot of these in any iteration, but the more popular movies execute it in a better way than I thought Avatar did. The story was unoriginal, and it wasn't told in a good way. Not to mention that the only two likable characters end up dying.

Actually Native Americans weren't exactly kicked out like that.. They were swindled then screwed over by legal jargin they could not combat because the United States refused to see them as citizens, so the same rights could not apply to them. They had only used force when the Indians were backed in a corner.. It was pretty much crap, where squaters could actually kick them out of their homes with no reprecautions because they had no rights.

I would disagree on both accounts. I thought the story was told very well, and there were more than two likeable characters. Seems like you just WANT to hate it.

Why do you think the story was told well? It was average on all fronts, and there were only two characters with an actual personality. And yes, I obviously just want to hate the movie. I payed ten dollars for a ticket to see it because I love spending money on things I'm set on despising.

I'm..erm..glad to admit that I contributed 9.75GBP to that cumulative total only last night. Damn London prices :( Although strangely I didn't feel ripped off.

[QUOTE="HoolaHoopMan"]I would disagree on both accounts. I thought the story was told very well, and there were more than two likeable characters. Seems like you just WANT to hate it.Jaks_Secret
Why do you think the story was told well? It was average on all fronts, and there were only two characters with an actual personality. And yes, I obviously just want to hate the movie. I payed ten dollars for a ticket to see it because I love spending money on things I'm set on despising.

I actually liked every character.. And the story was enjoyable, and the pacing was great.. There never was a dull or meaningless moment.. To me I don't understand the kind of animosity this movie gets, when I see movies like Star Trek get released on the same year with little criticism it seems.. Though it could just be backlash due to how popular and good reviews Avatar is getting from both average viewers, and movie reviewers alike.

I'm in a debate. I'm not going to be "LOL GUYZ I THINK IT MITE BE GOOD RLLY IT WAS GOOD LOL" because I don't think that. So in my mind, yes, my opinion is the end all. Because it's my opinion.
