Was the movie a box office success? Yes. Did it had cool visual effects? Yes. Will it become a classic? No. I saw the movie two times just to compare the 3D and the 2D and to be honest I don't believe that it is a movie that can be seen several times. The first time I saw it I was amazed by the effects but then I saw it a second time and I realized how simple and uninspired the movie is. Citizen Kane, Pulp Fiction, Chinatown, and Empire Strikes Back are some examples of movies that I can watch several times due to the fact that I am still amused by the cool dialogue, the amazing sequences, and the great acting. The scenes I enjoy the most are still able to surprise me and still allow me to discover new things about the movie I haven't seen before. This didn't happen with Avatar. the second time I saw it I wasn't surprised again and I got bored. Avatar is a movie I like to call "entertainment with an expiration date". This expression refers to the songs, movies, and TV shows that people pay attention to for a moment but then forget (examples of this are Slumdog Millionare and Boom Boom Pow or any other song by the Black Eyed Peas). Titanic was the previous movie to hold the box office record and it seems like people have forgotten about that film (it failed to survive the test of time). I strongly believe that the same will happen to Avatar. Do you agree? :D

I was bored with Avatar within the first half hour. I think Avatar is an example of a writer/producer becoming too involved with the other processes (directing, editing, etc).

Avatar is at least nice to look at though lol. Especially the first night scene in the jungle. Really it reminded me of Final Fantasy X for the most part.

I enjoyed it definitely. Chances are it won't be well remembered in 30 years, though I doubt it'll be forgotten.

I think it will be remembered as the true start of 3D for modern audiences (which may be a bad thing actually) and for how they did the movie. Now actors wont need to be so pretty anymore since they can put a CG face on anyone and make them look like anything they want. I know Beowulf did kinda the same thing and even Star Wars II and 300 but nothing to the extent that Avatar has done.

It probably will be. For how hugely popular it was when it was out, you never hear about it anymore. Hell, I had already forgotten about it until I read this thread.

The potential to bankrupt a studio and get people fired as in Heavens Gate or to produce a classic like The Deer hunter? Explain your point mister :P

While I have no interest in seeing this movie (unless if they show it on TV like years like later), people will not forget one of the highest grossing (if not the highest grossing) movies of all time.

Well, James Cameron is not a great screenplay writer. He makes mainstream entertaining scripts but nothing more than that so I highly doubt that he can succeed in writing a better screenplay. :P

Well I highly doubt that a good sequel can be made. The first one finished completely and I feel that it failed to leave open doors for sequels. The bad guys lost and left the planet and the good guys were happily ever after (I'm not spoiling anything, this can be predicted after the first 30 minutes have passed). How can you continue on a story that basically sums thing up and leaves no open doors for good sequel to be made?.. :P

Yea pretty much. They have the technology already created for the movie now so there really is no excuse for not having a better story/character development.

Im guessing you watched 3d first. Well...going from 3d to 2d is one reason you might not have been as inspired...the second being you had already seen it recently...taking away some appeal. Movies have periods of fading. Classics are often reborn later in time after a "slump" period... for various reasons. I havent seen the movie yet...btw. So Im not saying this being a fan of it.

I thought the same. But apparently the sequels are going to be separate stories, not continuous like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.

Start a conversation with whatever random person that has seen a considerable amount of films about classic movies and he will probably mention Casablanca, Scarface, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Gone With The Wind, Snow White, 8 1/2, Taxi Driver, Rocky, Raging Bull, Deer Hunter, etc etc etc. If you mention the word "Casablanca" to someone, he'll probably remember that movie perfectly and admire it, talk about Transformers and he won't be able to remember the movie as much as Casblanca or Reservoir Dogs. :P

Three reasons it willl never be forgotten:

1) It is the highest grossing film of all time - people will remember this, Avatar will be king until another movie takes over, therefore, it will remain on top and people curious to see it will always decide to experience it.

2) It's innovations will have a major impact on film industry - Avatar's innovations will probably make people look back at the movie that started it.

3) The story is simple and timeless - Like Star Wars, Avatar has a simple story with a sci-fi twist that will probably last forever.

Lord of the Rings are memorable films with a balance between action and story. Avatar was more action than story (It had a story, a very weak one). I actually know several individuals that would be willing to watch LOTR again one of these days and that still talk good things about the film if it is brought up to a conversation. :P

Shakespear's plays weren't really considered classics until almost 200 years after his death. I still haven't seen avatar yet, maybe in a few hundred years.

I'll agree with you on Transformers, but by this definition, Titanic isn't exactly what I consider forgotten; the love story is still stuck in many people's heads. Either way, time will tell Avatar's fate.

It was just an embarrassing parade of cliches. I counted about 10 of them in the first 10 minutes. This, from the guy who did Aliens and Terminator, oh Mr.Cameron, how the mighty have fallen. I'm glad Avatar was snubbed at the Oscars.

Samurai_Xavier

Star Wars has great characters that are incredibly developed (only for the characters in the original trilogy) and the saga had a memorable twist (Darth Vader is Luke's father). While Jake Sully and the other Avatar Characters were one dimensional and rather weak and what was the plot twist again? Was it that Jake Sully mounted that red dragon? (that was really predictable and not really amusing my friend). :P
