Well, usually the British have a peculiar sense of humor that is often misunderstood as offensive, but in this case, some of the things that were said are plainly offensive, and I should expect that those British hosts are not planning to visit México anytime soon.

EDIT: Did I just hear some British people making fun of Mexican cuisine? OMG, I did! No way! The British are the last people on this planet who should criticize any culture's food. British cooking is the worst cooking in Europe. Any cuisine that relies on as much boiled meat as the British cuisine does cannot be a good thing.

Seroiusly...

Mexican food>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>British food

You need to lighten up. Its a joke deal with it. Do you moan at all the comedians making jokes?

I think this thread has run it's course. There are those here of Mexican heritage who have stated that they do not find it offensive as other's else where have said the same. Maybe it's time that this thread was locked as most of it was about trivial BS that had no relation to the original post or it's content.

They built quite well on that though didn't they? =P

dkrustyklown

You mean that the United States built quite well on that, considering that Europe was an absolute wreck after WWII and would still be a wreck without the Marshall Plan, right?

EDIT: Which brings up what I think that the US should have done at the end of WWII, which was to use the nuclear advantage to obliterate the USSR for good and never help rebuild the rest of Europe, leaving it in ruins.

Oh right, so killing millions of innocent people is a good thing.

If you told a person of any nationality, doesn't need to be Mexican, that somebody in another country was saying 'offensive' things about their country, they'd most likely react negatively. Explain to and show to that person that in British comedy we like to use extreme stereotyping and 'insults' as a form of humour, and that everyone is targeted reasonably equally, then I'd guess they wouldn't feel so offended. Watch any British comedy panel show, like Mock the Week, and you'll see everything mocked, including race, religion, gender, sexuality, disabilities.. but it really isn't meant to offend. Sadly many comedians/presenters lately are being criticised and punished for this, which is sad because it's essentially part of our comedy culture to mock people, including ourselves. I'm glad the BBC have stood their ground on this one.

Another source saying that the Chinese language was started around 6000 BC, around 3400 years before the Indus script.

Vesica_Prime

It's the SAME source! It says, "BBC", right in the URL. That's thing about articles like that. Some archeologist misinterprets something he found and then he does a press release. Later on, his findings are proven wrong and the whole affair is forgotten. It happens all the time.

Besides, it's not a matter of "who was first" that I am talking about. I am talking about the exceptional feat of an isolated people developing a written language with influence or impulse from the outside world. That is a remarkeable feat NO MATTER WHEN IT HAPPENS. If a tribe of uncontacted Amazon natives spontaneously developed a written language today, Feb 4, 2011, then it would be just as remarkeable as if it happened five thousand years ago.

In lauding the indpendent development of a written text has nothing to do with dates.

Besides, once again, you should READ THE ARTICLE.

The very first line says, "State media say researchers identified..."

You see that? "State media".

Yeah, that means that it is nothing but communist propaganda spouted by the Chinese government for the purpose of self agrandizement. No one believes it. You won't find it in textbooks outside of China. Why? Because it's not real archeology, it's just the Chinese government spouting nonsense to make everyone feel better. That's what communists do, sheesh. You should know better than to believe the Chinese government in ANYTHING.

Great, so the Brits pop off with, "Insulting other cultures is a part of our culture, so people from other cultures shouldn't get mad when we insult, disparage, and disrespect their culture". But yet, if I start ridiculing British history and culture by pointing out that their cuisine is garbage, that they were late arrivals to the civilized world, that they were successfully invaded by (drumroll) the Dutch, that their royal family is a laughingstock, or that their people have the world's worst case of bucked teeth, then they get mad all of a sudden.

I presume that it's because they think that ridiculing other cultures, by virtue of being something unique to their own culture, is not acceptable when it comes from the outside world.

Look at the responses that I've gotten here on this thread. Some of the British took it in stride and weren't offended (tip-o-da-hat-to-you-btw), but others begand accusing me of "British-bashing" and began ranting about Darwin, the internet, laptops, and whatnot.

"Intolerance is part of our culture, so we demand that you tolerate our intolerance" seems to be the common defense here. Basically, they're trying to crawl through a loophole that they think gives them a green light to do that which they condemn others for doing. I am not surprised at all, either.

Well, this is the internet. Where no argument can be won, and where there are oceans of stupidity, hypocrisy and bigotry. I used to rise to it, but it just ends in anger and despair. And yes, Mexican food is better than our food :D

Pablo Francisco is not Mexican (in fact, he would probably get mad if you called him a Mexican to his face). He is a US citizen; born in the US and raised in the US. He is of CHILEAN descent, not Mexican.

So you basically have no idea what you are talking about, congratulations.

Yes we insult others (including ourselves) but don't mean it in a serious way. But you have gone to great lengths to insult all of Britain just to insult and not in a humerus way. There is a difference in insulting to make a joke and insulting to be hurtful but if you can't see that then well too bad for you.

On topic (as this topic has gone WAY of topic) if you don't like this sort of thing no one is making you watch it and as it is made in the UK for a UK audience there is bound to be jokes like this as that is British humour :P

I don't know if you can understand Spanish, but here is a link to Mexican coverage of the controversy in which the original footage is played with a Mexican host translating, followed by some very vicious ridicule of the British.

EDIT: note the very angry responses from Mexicans in the comment section

I do have an idea what I'm talking about, I just picked the wrong example to get my point across. My point was if a Mexican poked fun at another culture would you ****that as racism or not? I just don't get why you see the Top Gear people racist when Family Guy, American Dad and Drawn Together have done the same jokes time and time again.

Did have to laugh at this comment on the Youtube link above "England is that pathetic that their last poet was Benny Hill and Rod Stuart."

Pretty funny stuff. Nice car too with a good price tag. Stop getting to offended by them. British people have always been like that and they always will be, it's part of their cultural heritage.

I found some of the hosts comments very funny, although some didn't translate well I don't think. LOL at "God hates them and he gave Maradona a goal" :P But see, they're doing the same thing - I don't know this show so I don't know how serious it is, but it could just be a bit of playful banter. The reaction was overly dramatic though, Family Guy laughs at British people quite a lot (posh, cockney characters with bad teeth), and that show is massive over here - in fact it airs on a BBC channel :P

I like it when people don't get British sense of humour and freak it. Its funny.
