[QUOTE="cjek"]If you told a person of any nationality, doesn't need to be Mexican, that somebody in another country was saying 'offensive' things about their country, they'd most likely react negatively. Explain to and show to that person that in British comedy we like to use extreme stereotyping and 'insults' as a form of humour, and that everyone is targeted reasonably equally, then I'd guess they wouldn't feel so offended. Watch any British comedy panel show, like Mock the Week, and you'll see everything mocked, including race, religion, gender, sexuality, disabilities.. but it really isn't meant to offend. Sadly many comedians/presenters lately are being criticised and punished for this, which is sad because it's essentially part of our comedy culture to mock people, including ourselves. I'm glad the BBC have stood their ground on this one.dkrustyklown
Great, so the Brits pop off with, "Insulting other cultures is a part of our culture, so people from other cultures shouldn't get mad when we insult, disparage, and disrespect their culture". But yet, if I start ridiculing British history and culture by pointing out that their cuisine is garbage, that they were late arrivals to the civilized world, that they were successfully invaded by (drumroll) the Dutch, that their royal family is a laughingstock, or that their people have the world's worst case of bucked teeth, then they get mad all of a sudden.
I presume that it's because they think that ridiculing other cultures, by virtue of being something unique to their own culture, is not acceptable when it comes from the outside world.
Look at the responses that I've gotten here on this thread. Some of the British took it in stride and weren't offended (tip-o-da-hat-to-you-btw), but others begand accusing me of "British-bashing" and began ranting about Darwin, the internet, laptops, and whatnot.
"Intolerance is part of our culture, so we demand that you tolerate our intolerance" seems to be the common defense here. Basically, they're trying to crawl through a loophole that they think gives them a green light to do that which they condemn others for doing. I am not surprised at all, either.
Well, this is the internet. Where no argument can be won, and where there are oceans of stupidity, hypocrisy and bigotry. I used to rise to it, but it just ends in anger and despair. And yes, Mexican food is better than our food :D
