I'm surprised no one's mentioned Peter Greenfield and Chuck Berry. Man, listening to Berry makes me always wonder why people always seem to discount him as one of the greats.

My fav guitarist and musician in general is Matt Bellamy :)JSDempsey
Although Muse is my favorite band, he isn't my favorite guitarist.
My favorite guitarist is either Slash, Zack Wylde, or Alex Lifeson.

I can't decide between Tom Morello and Jeordie White... the latter is better-known for bass, though.

Presumably you are talking about rock guitar and let's remember that most people confuse what is good with what they like, which are two different things. I think AC/DC rules, but I'll also be the first one to tell you that just about anyone can start from zero and get up to the level of Angus Young's proficiency within a couple of months. In other words, great songs but mediocre musicianship. Eric Clapton is definitely over-rated but he wrote more mainstream-friendly songs you can hear on the radio than, say, Jeff Beck or my personal pick for best ever - RITCHIE BLACKMORE.

Lots of people say its Jimmy Page , i think Kirk Hammet is much ! much ! much ! much better than Jimmy Page . I hate it , why did they choose Led Zeppelin the best band ever ? I think Metallica rules them all , and AC/DC , these 2 bands , i think the greatest bands ever , well whatever , whats your favorite guitarist??

KIRK HAMMET

cmdkyl

Um no. Look at him failing at playing Dyer's Eve: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjvajNHPewY And then there's Lars.. not even playing the double bass in the verse.. :(

Yngwie Malmsteen. Screw songwriting and riffs. In the end, only Yngwie is capable of truly unleashing the fury.

its not really messing up, kirk is pretty much incapable of playing these solo's anymore, thats why they hardly play battery / blackened / dyers eve / metal militia anymore. and lars cant play double bass thru entire songs anymore.. he's said it in interviews even. kirk was always a joke, exodus got bttr when he left, he scraped this solo something aweful, i mean... dyers eve solo isnt that bad, people on youtube play it, people on youtube play tornado of souls, and 2 ppl ive seen have played it perfect. if kirk cant play his own solo anymore, id pay money to see him attemp to play tornado, and cry.

EDIT: the guy in the audience at the beginning of this video knew it back in the day :P

I've always wanted to solo with those scales but I'm still not good enough.
