So what is it? Keep in mind that I'm asking for what you think is the best, not what your favorite one is; there is a difference.
My selection is 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It would take me a while to think what the bestfilm ever made is. That's a bold statement. It's all a matter of opinion.

I don't think there could ever be a true greatest film ever made since the question is quite subjective. There's been attempts to try to come to a consensus as to which film could be considered the best ever made through voting done by filmmakers, historians, critics and film academics. When such votings have been done the one film which always comes up as the most as the GOAT is the same film I consider the best ever made.
CITIZEN KANE
I know more than some people think the film is "overrated" since the story leaves them either cold and/or bored. The same could be said of 2001: A Space Odyssey but that title gets a bit more love from the younger generation due to its more futuristic storytelling. Welles' first and greatest work was and is still the one film every film student and prospective filmmaker watches, studies and absorbs to learn how to become a better filmmaker. Before this filma was made the art of filmmaking was still raw but with new innovations being discovered left and right, but Welles took all that and actually made them work in one film and since then every filmmaker owes what they know now to what he did.
It may not be the film that will win the popular vote, but then again this topic is not about what one thinks is their favorite film but what is the best. In my opinion, Citizen Kane is the best film ever made. The next four to round out the top 5 being The Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, The Searchers, and Casablanca.

I'm shocked we got the right answer so soon.
Superman the movie
-the most amazing cast ever?
-undoutidly one of the best scores ever
-incredible special effects even today
-captures your mind and eye and puts you into a fantasy semi-real world that perfectly fit with "superman"
-INCREDIBLE cinematography and script.
This has only happened in one other movie and it was the Godfather. Superman is absolutely the most underrated movie of all time.
My favorite movie of all time is Apocalypse Now, but the best movie ever made is probably...
