[QUOTE="Mousetaches"]So you acknowledge it's west? rawsavon
I never said it wasn't west... I just said that it is NOT ONLY West. West is half correct. The side with the longest border matters not. Hypothetical: If North Dakota had a huge southern border (compared to its northern one), would you say it was a southern sate....no, of course not

I wasn't saying just the length of the borders of the state. But the fact that california basically defines our western border and makes very little contribution to our southern border of the United States. The regions aren't necessarily chosen based on geographic location, either. When talking about your favorite "region" of america you talk about the style of life there as well as the climate. Often times the last thing people think of is the geography. Calling California south-western doesn't group it with the states that share its similarities. North-east isn't just because it is in the north and east, but because the climate + populations in that area are similar. The South isn't just the south because it is in the southern part of the country but because it has a hotter climate and a "southern" style of people (the population is fairly defined, especially when you take your average southerner and compare to your average north easterner).

To make the argument that outliers make an area unclassifiable is nonsensical, because by entering into a topic about classification you accept that the need to classify is necessary and classification necessitates generalizations.

My default answer is the South but that is because I haven't been able to spend much time outside of it. However, I'd love to one day stay in the Northeast for a lengthy period of time (several months for an internship perhaps). I'm heavily considering moving to the Northeast to start a church, but I hate to make that kind of decision without spending some more time there first.mindstorm
Starting a church in the Northeast would be a tough sell. My family switched churches when I was a kid, but I'm the only person that I know like that from back home. I'd bet that half of the population is Catholic up there. Tons of Italians, Irish, and Latinos.

...Classify....classify...classify...
Sorry, I was just continuing the trend.

I was the one that came into this topic joking around.
I said Texas.
If you had more than say 500 posts in OT, you might know that every topic that comes about similar to this I say "TEXAS"
-be favorite state, country, region, place, religion...it is called 'kidding around'

But then you decide to say

Texas is not a region.Mousetaches

Really, :o ...I had no idea

You decided to be technical and take the fun out of the topic.
So if you want to be technical that is fine.

I wasn't saying just the length of the borders of the state.

Ummm...yes, you did
"its western border is so much larger than it's southern border (see map)" Page 5 of the thread...PS (being technical) it is 'its, not it's"

But the fact that california basically defines our western border and makes very little contribution to our southern border of the United States. The regions aren't necessarily chosen based on geographic location, either.

Actually, the definition for region is
"The extended spatial location of something"

When talking about your favorite "region" of america you talk about the ****of life there as well as the climate. Often times the last thing people think of is the geography.

Untrue...people in many northern states (Montana) share a great deal in common with Texas.
-so they have similar attitudes, beliefs, tastes, etc...but we are NOT grouped together...WHY?...location, location, location

Calling California south-western doesn't group it with the states that share its similarities.

California is unlike any other state in almost everything except for Geography
-unless you want to say they are like the NE states politically (closest to that area)...so are you going to group them with the NE states
-or would you group them with Texas based on ethnic diversity...and, therefore, customs

NO...you group them based on Geography

To make the argument that outliers make an area un****fiable is nonsensical, because by entering into a topic about ****fication you accept that the need to ****fy is necessary and ****fication necessitates generalizations.

It is not that a small amount of outliers make cla$$fication impossible...it is that the graphs are no longer bell shaped to have traditional outliers
-politics, diversity, customs, are so disparate in each state that it makes it impossible to group them by anything but geography (except for about 5-6 NE states and 5-6 SE states)

[QUOTE="SeraphimGoddess"][QUOTE="rawsavon"] Yet it forms our Southern border...rawsavon
A very small part of it does. Bordering with Mexico isn't a criteria for being a southern state. You never hear Arizona and New Mexico being call southern states.

The US is too large to label any state with only one 'direction' California stretches farther South than Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina...all very 'southern' states -there is no way one could accurately describe the location of any state with just one 'direction' The only reason California is labeled as West is because of expansion and the Gold Rush Furthermore, most places (in the US) are too diverse to use other means for labeling (politics, etc.) -hell Texas had a Democrat for Governor not too long ago

Actually, considering the layout of the states, you're right. If you want exactness, you can't use just N,S,E,W. It would look more like this:

Northwest, so uh west.

Portland has more stip clubs per capita then any other city in the US including Las Vegas.

If you are a conservative I would suggest you don't let Portlanders know. They tend to try and stone conservatives.
