Both have their good and bad examples. Monty Python and George Carlin are great but Little Britain and Dave Chapelle are terrible.

I haven't had much of a foray into the medium of American stand-up, but from what I've seen it's absolutely clear that British stand-up comedians are far funnier than American ones. Absolutely and demonstrably.

super_mario_128
There is good American stand up out there but it never gets as much attention. It seems that a lot of the popular American comedians just use the same old race jokes over and over.

Eh, It's all about choice.

My only problem with British Comedies is that they are TOO SHORT.

I think the format is 6 episodes per series? I know that makes it a bit more 'fresh' since it there isn't as much content going on which might drag down a series after a few seasons, but growing up under the American format of comedy series episodes, It's brutal.

British Comedy is a bit tongue in cheek and filled with slang that a non british person wouldn't reconize or get right off the bat, which would sour it for most. But I can traverse both worlds since I live in 'em, I guess.

Plus Peepshow is my current fave comedy to watch, hands down. And this is coming from a Seinfeld fanatic.

[QUOTE="PrimateJoe"]I don't think it's necessary to draw comparison. There is little reason to tell somebody my form of entertainment is superior to their preferred form of entertainment. All that matters is if somebody is satisfied with the way things are in their own lives.

This. Opinions are not fact. And when judging any form of art or entertainment, it will always be only an opinion.

For the most part I agree. Though I am one of the only americans I know who even gets British humor. in a film class we got to watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail.. and omg.. Complete and utter silence, other than me who was on the floor rolling. Same thing happened to me when I tried to show my friends Black Books, Spaced, and the British office, they just didnt get it.

British humor (for the most part) seems to be more intelligent and american humor is more crude/slap stick. I like the british approach more, While we do get some intelligent comedies ... every once and a while ( Strangers with candy is all that comes to mind lol) They dont succeed as well as other comedies in america do at all (Vampires Suck #2 really america?..)

VendettaRed07
You said you loved monty pythons holy grail, yet you say British comedy is more intelligent? You are setting a pretty bad double standard there. In my opinion the best representations of american comedy are: Seinfeld, 30 Rock and How I met your mother. Then there is Canadian comedy...Corner Gas is the only good show here, and it is done.

IMO the best tv comedy moments has always been from British TV without doubt. However, I would also say that the gems are inconsistant, but when they come, they shone brightly.

lol

Here

are

some

british

comedy

moments

over the years

I don't think British Comedy is better. Although the 2007 version of "Death at A Funeral" was pretty good.

Americans are going to disagree because they don't understand British humour at all.

Personally, I think it's better:

  • League of Gentlemen
  • Mighty Boosh
  • That Mitchell and Webb Look
  • Shooting Stars
  • Only Fools and Horses
  • Faulty Towers
  • Blackadder
  • Mr Bean
  • Top Gear (I would definitely call it a comedy as it's just hilarious)
  • Mock The Week
  • Never Mind the Buzzcocks

The only American comedies I find amusing are:

  • Scrubs (one of my favourite comedies)
  • Simpsons
  • Family Guy

Death at a Funeral to me seems to be more of the black comedy, just like Mexicans have their special brand of comedy black people have their special brand of comedy, and so do white people. Mexican comedy tends to lean towards making fun of life in a dysfunctional family, black comedy tends to be slightly racest, and white comedy tends to be more dirty and sexual ie. Adam Sandler, I perfer witty, intellegent humor.

I find most British comedy dull and boring. Though american comedy trying to copy british comedy is even worse.

Original American comedy is the best. We have a reputation as the worlds laughing stock after all.;)

What more could I say? This is pretty close to word for word how I feel about it.

I'll take American classic comedy any day over British classic comedy.. Nothing can compare to movies like Animal House, Porky's, Revenge of the Nerds, Slapshot, Dr. Strangelove, Mel Brook's movies, The Producers, The Big Lebowski, Ghostbusters.. And many many more.

I agree fully with the exception of the American Office being better than the British Office, purely on the fact that Ricky Gervais is naff at writing shows.

British comedy is better and Americans keep copying things. I do think Americans have successfully made something they've ripped off better though, The Office. I prefer the American version for some reason. :)

that film was awful, a few iscolated funny scenes at the start. then they kill off the only funny character half way through. Not a good example
