I don't understand, they don't want to pay an extra $150 in taxes to help combat fires in the area, but they are willing to suceed from the State of California, which means that all public roads, public schools, public transportation, court houses etc. would either need to be purchased from California, and/or maintained on the tax dollars of the county compared to the tax dollars of the state, thus increasing taxes higher than the $150. In addition, they would now need to either pay the State of California to assist in fire control or invest in more equipment to combat fires because the State of California would now be under no obligation to assist this county in fire control beyond the State's boarders, and the county would be under no right to receive assistance from California because they are not paying any State taxes to California. This whole idea is self-defeating.

Good for them, if they think they can handle it.

I'd love to see the city of Toronto, Ontario become it's own city state.  That way Ontario can get back to moving forward instead of being sucked into the whole that city dug itself.  Not to mention the amount of seats it has for a Provincial election which normally leaves the rest of the Province high and dry.

If the entire state got on board, the US might be a little concerned.  But some little hick country is no big deal.  Let them fail.

Yeah. 45,000 out of a state of 38,000,000. That'll really put a dent in those electoral votes.

worlock77

It would take away at least one though. Every state must have at least one congressman. Plus maybe some other counties will join them.

One whole electoral vote? Crap. That's a game changer.

It would take away at least one EV from Cali, but it would give the new state at least 3.

Why is the conservative reaction to succeed when they don't agree with things?

MakeMeaSammitch

Liberals have threatened to secede too. I remember O'Reilly doing a segment about a poll showing some support for secession in Vermont (granted it was still a small minority, I think about 13%) during the Bush years.

Besides conservatives haven't threatened secession in large numbers.

Yeah, the 2 senators is why the state would have 3 EV if it only had one Congressman. Basically a state's electoral votes are determined by adding the senators and the congressmen, which allows smaller states to have a bit more of a say than they would if only Congressmen were counted.

New York by far. New York has 8.3 million people whereas Los Angeles, the second largest city in the US, has 3.8 million people.

Yeah, because moderates and left-wingers are totally notorious for their hatred of gays and the persecution of Christianity in America. :|

Hannah Gastonguay said her family was fed up with government control in the U.S. As Christians they don't believe in "abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church," she said.

U.S. "churches aren't their own," Gastonguay said, suggesting that government regulation interfered with religious independence.

Among other differences, she said they had a problem with being "forced to pay these taxes that pay for abortions we don't agree with."

The Gastonguays weren't members of any church, and Hannah Gastonguay said their faith came from reading the Bible and through prayer.

"The Bible is pretty clear," she said.

But I'm sure they exercise perfect reason when voting for political candidates.

Non-whites in general tend to be left-wing leaning. The religious ones who are left-wing are typically not crying "Armageddon" when they have to pay taxes, or when a church marries a gay couple, or when an abortion is performed. So my point still stands: left-wing people are not known for obsessing over the evils of gay marriage, taxes, abortion and government persecution of Christians.

You might not have said one thing about race, but it is implied due to who you are talking about. The others are right. Blacks here in the south, who tend to be very liberal are just as religious if not more as those you are referring to who had troubles at sea.

You might not have said one thing about race, but it is implied due to who you are talking about. The others are right. Blacks here in the south, who tend to be very liberal are just as religious if not more as those you are referring to who had troubles at sea.

WhiteKnight77

Are they also obsessed with gay marriage, taxes, government interference, and abortion? My post pointed out right-wingers, not religious people or black people. If black religious people tend to be liberal, then they aren't under that umbrella. See what I mean about relevance yet?

The point is, how do you know that those religious folks who left on the boat were ultra-right wingers? That was your claim. They very well could be left leaning and upset at how the government is going.

As for relevence, I will just leave this here: The Growing Black Voice against Abortion.

So, liberal, but against everything that makes one liberal? How do you figure they counteract the cognitive dissonance?

Nowhere in that article does it state political affiliation if any. Suggesting that they are right wing extremists is speculation and not based on fact.

gamerguru100

Yeah, because moderates and left-wingers are totally notorious for their hatred of gays and the persecution of Christianity in America. :|

LOL @ persecution of Christians. No one is stopping them from going to church. I'm making fun of the people who actually believe Christians are persecuted BTW.

Worldwide Christians are the most persecuted religious group, comprising about 75% of the people who are persecuted on account of their faith. Iran has arrested numerous Christian pastors, China is cracking down on house churches as well as trying to appoint bishops without the Pope's approval. the list goes on.

There are liberals who oppose abortion and/or same-sex marriage. Obama used to oppose gay marriage, Sharpton used to oppose abortion.

[QUOTE="The-Apostle"]Damn it... Was hoping it was a certain county in SoCal I live in.:cry::cry:The-Apostle

You guys should secede too, take some electoral votes away from Hillary or whatever leftist wants to run for president next. Plus get away from Boxer and Feinstein and Brown and the others.

Meh... My county is becoming more and more liberal anyway. Damn lazy ass bastards...

Unfortunate.

There are quite a few people who would argue that neither of those men were (or still are) liberal.

What is the definition of a liberal? Isn't liberalism the belief in limited government, individual rights and the free market?

A county of 45,000 who's only economy is a bit of tourism? Yeah, good luck surviving when you're no longer privy to tax revenues from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

worlock77

They could make up for that lost tax revenue from Los Angeles and San Francisco by sending raiding parties against those cities.

Why are these people seen as crazy or whatever other name you can think of because they don't agree with anything their state is doing, and want to break off and join forces with other like-minded counties and form their own state?

What's crazy about that?
