Can We Defend Earth?

Hey,

I read the article which Steven Hawkins, which suggested that even though there is a high chance of E.T life, we should not make contact because the "aliens" may share things which we have in common such as greed and hunger for power. So, do you think at the moment, our technology can stand an attack from E.T life and technology?

If the aliens had the technology to get to our planet, i would highly doubt it. The nearest star is 4 light years away.

To be honest, if I was a leader of the government and the aliens were about to be in total control, I'll rather nuke ourselves as well.

Not likely. At the remotest possibility that aliens do come here and if they wish to cause harm they would be highly more advanced and we would stand no chance in a direct standoff.

We would have to form a guerilla like resistance if we are to have even the slightest chance.

With that said if aliens do end up having human nature (the greed, and power and stuff) I am about 99.999% positive that there are other planets with a lot more plentiful and rich resources then ours. Since we are afterall draining ours. It would be in their best interest to find worlds where the indiginous population use spears chipped from rock and the raw resources, for the most part, would be untapped.

Eh, maybe...

Depends on how advanced the alien technology is. IMO however, the biggest problem wouldn't be the technology, it would be how splintered we are as a race.

Depends on the specific culture of the specific aliens that we are talking about.

Depends on how long we can repel each attack until they simply give up and decide that Earth isn't worth it.

But generally, I'd say "no". We can't defend against an attack by advanced extraterrestrials. Interstellar space travel wouldn't even be feasible for them unless they are EXTREMELY technologically advanced. And in that case, it is very likely that we are dead as ****. Even if we continually thwart their plans to invade, they would surely have the means to easily kill all of us from orbit and then take what they want without any resistance.

Of course, that's also neglecting the possibility of interstellar politics. Maybe the invading race has the technology to wipe us out in mere seconds, but simply doesn't do so because that'd mean sanctions and military actions imposed against them by even MORE advanced alien races.

Kinda reminds me of the Antarens from Master of Orion.

I get the biggest fleet together and they still manage to whip me.

I'm gonna go with most people on this one, and say that if aliens had the technology to send an invasion force here, we'd be in a bad way. Or maybe they'd just be coming here to mine our resources (which hopefully doesn't extend to removing most of the iron mass of the planet to build a ringworld or something), and they'll make remote-controlled human bodies to wander around with and interact with us. Then one of those human bodies will fall in love with, uh, Monica Bellucci or somebody, and that will unite us and and we'll fight the aliens and send them off our planet. Then this will happen.

Nope, no chance. Otherwise, we would be the ones using interstellar spaec travel in order to attempt to conquer them.

Now, that doesn't automatically mean that we're screwed. Just that we're probably screwed. Maybe, even though the aliens are advanced, getting here is still pretty hard. A small strike force is sent to kill us, they get killed by our counterattack. The aliens CAN absolutely obliterate us. It's just that they don't expect to get THAT much out of our planet. And since the initial strike force got killed, it's simply not economically feasible to send out more aliens to attack the same planet.

Or...the attacking aliens are far more advanced than us, but they themselves may be at risk of getting obliterated if they violate interstellar treaties in order to kick our asses.

Who's to say? There are just too many possibilities here for us to DEFINITELY say what would happen.

But yeah...we're not even CLOSE to making it feasible or plausible or possible to invade another world. Any other race that CAN do that IS the technologically superior race. There is NO chance that WE are the superior race if WE are the ones getting attacked by aliens. That doesn't necessarily mean that Earth can't be "defended". Just make no mistake...any alien race that wants to attack/enslave/conquer/devour/eradicate us VERY LIKELY will succeed in doing so. And if we successfully repel the first wave of attackers and then they leave us alone, it is most likely NOT because we can kick their asses. Rather, they are fully capable of kicking our asses, but for some reason or another simply deemed it to be "not worth it" to do so at the present time. Make no mistake, "successfully defending ourselves" (as unlikely as even that is) does NOT mean that we've beaten them or that we've won the war or that we are the superior species.

Considering what the one user said about the nearest star being 4 light years away, even if aliens were to somehow travel the necessary distant to reach Earth would the race even have the resources to wage a war with the Earth? Considering they just traveled 4+ Lightyears and there isn't any spit stops along the way, you'd think the last thing they'd want to do is fight.clayron

However, they might avoid a fight altogether. They might park themselves in orbit above our planet, carpet-bomb us with nukes from a position of safety until every single one of us is dead. Then, with no resistance, they'd come down and mine the planet for every resource which is valuable to them.

The possibility that it's not economixcally feasible to "fight" us does not necessarily mean that it's NOT economically feasible to avoid a fight altogether by bombing us from space with no warning and no ability for us to fight back.

How do we even make contact? Beam radio waves into space? Any such radio waves will take tens of thousands of years to make contact (maybe even considerably longer if civilizations at least as advanced as ours aren't present in our own galaxy), and it will even take longer for them to reach us after having picked up that signal. We'll probably be long gone by then. If we're not, then chances are we are pretty badass ourselves.

Nuclear weapons can't destroy the planet, they can damage it and create nuclear winter but mankind doesn't have a weapon that can physically destroy the planet...yet.
