No. If aliens had the technology to travel here, it's extremely unlikely that they would be at our level technologically. Think about evolution. It took us an extremely long time to evolve, what are the chances that aliens evolved at the exact same rate as us?

Oh, and I also hate it when people think that things can even go the speed of light. As of right now, we think it's basically the universal speed limit. And anyway, just getting close would take an insane amount of energy.

That actually argues in favor that we might be able to successfully defend ourselves against them.

Any way you look at it, it very well may take a LONG time for them to get here, and be EXTREMELY costly for them. There's no way we could win a war against them, but we may be able to defeat them in a battle. Just because they are advanced enough to reach us does not necessarily mean that their ships can't be damaged by missiles and bombs. Furthermore, they likely won't waste their time sending out the entire fleet if they assume that we're weak and incompetent. Furthermore, regardless of their technology, their battle tactics may not be sufficient. They may not have ever fought an enemy that fights like we do. And by the time they learn to adapt to our strategies, they may have already lost the first battle.

And really...the first battle might be the only battle. Travelling through space might be EXTREMELY difficult and costly for them. And if they send out a small fleet, and lose the first battle, then they may just decide that it's not worth it to keep attacking.

That is very unlikely, of course, but it's certainly a very real possibility.

I think this might be dependent on how much they value our planet. If Earth is only one of a handful of planets that can support complex life in the galactic neighbourhood, then it just might be worth it to them.

We'll maybe against lesser threats, but not against the Great Devourer.

Yeah, of course. But that's "ifs" and "mights". We really have no idea why they're here or what they're after. In some cases, we could potentially stand a chance of defeating them (which of course also depends on a lot of other stuff that we know nothing about), and in other cases we literally wouldn't last for 10 seconds. It really just all depends on a LOT of things, and there's no way to know about any of that.

All I'm saying is this...the fact that they are technologically superior does not mean that they would wipe us out. Maybe they COULD wipe us out pretty damn easily. But as far as whether or not they WOULD wipe us out or if their initial attack force is sufficient to conquer the planet, those are total unknowns. I have no doubt that they CAN destroy us. After all, it's not as if we can strike back at their weapons manufacturing facilities or bomb their presidential palace. We're fighting a defensive war, and the only way we can win is if we convince them to just give up. If they wanted to wipe us out, they absolutely could. But just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that it's a good idea. It is entirely possible that Earth's forces could repel the first invasion, and that then the aliens just say "Earth isn't worth it, we're going somewhere else". Doesn't mean it's a likely scenario. That doesn't mean that those same aliens wouldn't be able to easily obliterate us given enough time and resources. But people assume that those aliens would have essentially infinite time and resources, and that's not at all a foregone conclusion. It is actually a very real possibility that the first strike force gets defeated, and the aliens then just plain give up on Earth.

I didn't do any calculations. The "blow the world up several times over" thing was just a generally accepted assumption by the people who just like big explosions.

scorch-62

Well, now you can tell people who like big explosions that's not exactly the case.

I'm imagining that theyd have better WEAPONS yes, but We'd have numbers on our side. Imagine if the 6.5 BILLION people in the world ALL took up weapons. Yes they could use there version of a nuke to destroy us but this is assuming they don't want to kill ALL of us. (minus kids of course in the numbers)

I think they would probably just bombard us from space. Or inject some human killing virus into the atmosphere.

Because these guys don't look like they could cause much harm to us physically.
