Cheerleader trespasses onto property.....cheerleader gets shot by property owner

Heres what I don't get, why did the guy shoot them if they were FLEEING the property? It also said they hadn't gone more than a few feet in, so this guy shot someone who was like at the street? That is ridiculous and definitely punishable if you ask me, especially since he hit her in the head, which shows that he had intent to kill....
