Yes... we kind of got civilized in the modern age though. You're confusing yourself with Islam.

ObeseBanana

What? All that modern age civilizing and priests still can't keep their hands off of little boys. All Religions are a joke and I'm not gonna be a hypocrite and say one is better then the other.

Oh dear that was offensive let's stop here.

Are we going to have a discussion, or are you going to act like I am stupid. Now tell me what "morals" you find wrong.

So you think slavery and rape of slaves is acceptable?

Slavery was indentured servitude in the Biblical times, not the modern day slave trading/brutality that it has become. And please tell me what you are referring to when you said "rape of slaves".

Educate them. Teach them to be tolerant and open minded, don't enforce anything, but teach them the basic ideals and concepts behind most religions, let them decide.

Lol, you do realize the only reason religion does work, is because it's taught to children at an extremely young (and susceptible) age, just like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. I don't belive any sane and rational 18 year old would believe in the bible (or any other religious book) if he was just first introduced to it. One has to be raised upon the fable to truly believe in it.

Plenty of kids who go to church and are encouraged to be religious end us atheists later in their lives, so I don't think early exposure to religion affects their mind-making-up in the future.Theokhoth

Indeed, this thread is pretty much done then. :P

That's not true. Many athesists have found their way to Islam for whatever reason. It's your personal belief. Stop being an angry atheist.

Because we're eventually told/discover that it's not true. Also it's easier to contain the stories in the Bible as being true, because they already happened a long time ago, no matter how silly they might sound, while Santa Claus is built up as a person who exists today and sneaks into your house at night. Obviously that may be a bit easier to dispel, don't you think?

Parents will always try to do what they feel is best for their kids... which in someway will involve expressing their own opinions about something. If they believe in religion, they will surely tell their kids about it.

Should they? yes. Because it's their beliefs. If you don't try and nudge your kids in what you believe is the right direction, you aren't being a parent at all.

Don't be ridiculous. Children are more likely to stick with religions they've been inculcated with as a child and you know it. Exceptions prove nothing.

We don't believe in Santa when we're old, because our parents tell us (or we uncover) at a younger age, that it was our parents themselves who were placing the gifts under the tree, even though we were always brought up to believe it was Santa Claus. Hell, if it weren't for that part (the home invasion aspect), I'm sure people (adults) would still believe that there could be a man in the North Pole named Santa Claus (except that he wouldn't be putting gifts under your tree).

It might sound extreme or silly that one would still believe that, but religion proves people can still belive in anything these days.

Santa Claus is based on reality where we can actually see what he does. If a child goes downstairs and sees the parents putting down presents instead of Santa, the myth is dispelled. Religion on the other hand is pure faith based so empirical evidence is not required for one to believe.

Children should have all their options left open. I don't think parents should force their religion on their children. It's immoral.

Most people who are introduced to religion while young become blind believers...at least for a bit.

Imo its not bad for children to be introduced to their parents religion.

Parents just have to not be pushy when the kid grows up IF he/she has doubts or wants to explore new religions or the lack of it.

Teenaged

I completely agree with this.

Do you think children should be encouraged not to pick a religion until they're older? After all children aren't capable of understanding such things properly. UgliestWeen

Religion is a freedom granted to us at birth. And until we are old enough, our Parents hold our rights. So its up to the Parents. Many of the kids I know today wouldn't be who they are today if it weren't for God. Don't take him away from our children, let the Parents decide. The kids are our Future.

God gives people Hope, if their parents don't teach them that in the beginning (or we take away their right until 18), they will avoid it because it is unknown to them. Of course I'm speaking generally. (and when I say God, it can be a different religion.)

Children are gonna be raised by the beliefs of their parents. Whether that be religious or atheist, they have to be raised with some sort of belief (or lack there of).

Up to the parents, I guess. Not choosing a religion is actually a choice as well. When kids mature, they then have the ability to decide what's best for them.

Despite my staunch anti-proselytization stance, I'm actually pretty aight with parents raising their children to be religious. For one, I'm not crazy about intruding into others' personal lives unless it's absolutely necessary. It would be pretty ridiculous to tell people that they couldn't try to instill their own values in their children or practice their traditions with them. Moreover, a child's understanding of the world will be affected by their parents' perspective in any circumstance, so saying "NO RELIGION" isn't going to change a whole lot in this regard.

I'm against indoctrination because I would want my child to make up their own mind on what to believe in. It is also more natural imo.
