So Chrome OS is coming out this month. Is it necessary? Tablets have been sprung out since it was first announced. At the same time, other free netbook OS alternatives are available (Ubuntu for example).

Sure, for the usual netbook user, Chrome OS sounds great. But is it too late? Now with other alternatives also available? Unless google gets the support needed by netbook manufacturers, I don't believe it will go very far.

What are your thoughts on this?

Apple has a huge following. Google is just throwing it's hat into the OS ring.

Then Google Game Console, Google Store, Google Cars, Google Houses, Google Planes, Google Land, Google Island, The Republic of Google and finally Planet Google.

If they integrate some awesome applications or services which can be used with their OS only for Google account holders, it may do well.

It's basically Google Chrome, and nothing else. I can run Google Chrome inside an OS; why would I want it as my OS? :P

I think it's pretty much only to be used by netbooks and such. Because the os is just google chrome, it boots up and is ready to go in under 10 seconds. It's not going to be used on a desktop obviously, but for a netbook it will work great.

So instead of just a browser that sends everything I view to google HQ, I can have a whole OS that does that?

Well it basically is still a browser, only one that your computer directly boots to.

I am intrigued to try it since Google may be the company to give Microsoft a run for its money. Apple is perfectly content with its niche and there are too many small companies offering their own variants of Linux so that won't take off anytime soon either. Google, on the other hand, is massive and has the power to move things forward.

If you're intrigued to try it, why not just download Google Chrome? That's all Chrome OS is.

I think this is interesting for ultra cheap but easy to use laptops used in school/college for writing papers/doing research. My friend and I were just saying how soon computers are probably going to become standard for schools.

I think the overall goal behind Chrome OS isn't exactly to get people to use their OS, but to get tablet/netbook manufacturers to start removing unnecessary stuff, thereby decreasing the cost. Hard drives, BIOS, and other things can be discarded.

Well this isn't really like that. A computer running Chrome OS will still do the processing of a Flash game (e.g.) on the client-side.

That's why I said that, because Gaikai and OnLive don't require any major processing on the client side. Chrome OS suffices in that regard, for it is a web browser. o.O

too lightweight. =(

I might give it another look, to see if it can do anything... else. Otherwise I don't really see much of a reason to pick it over ubuntu.
