I heard about this in the feed on G4TV, and I searched in google and it pulled up a few interesting articles:
CNN Money On This Story
Joystiq On This Story
IMO, it is a horrible idea. What is your opinion?

I'd rather see poker
What a joke, MLG needs to die.
Canuck3000
Same. Seeing Negreanu and Ivey get gold medals would be cool ;)
I hope it doesn't happen, as I know a few bums who spend 8+ hours a day playing Halo 3, trying to become "Pro" and joining the MLG.
Kinda sad how they treat gaming as a tool to make money as opposed to just having fun.
it shouldn't be in the olympicsbut the championships and leagues should be made more public. They need to get some better commentators first, ESPN does it resnobly but they can't keep up with it. When gaming develops more then it can be put into the olympics.
They should put chess in first and maybe some more combat games like martial arts and such.
thats a horrible idea. the olympics are about the finest athletes from around the world competing. not a bunch of nerds playing Halo 3 in a dark roomFUBAR24
do you mean that they should have to be athletic to be in the olympics? What's curling, shooting and archery doing in the olympics then?
If you watched pro gaming you'ld know that the nerds in the dark room are only the people who are trying to be pro, once they are pro it's quite different.
i love video games and all, but this is just pushing it. gamers aren't considered athletes, it doesn't take years of gaming experience to be that good, and age is irrelevant since Xbox Live kind of proves that sometimes little kids kick ass at HalobulletswordTypical console gaming fits into that but there are PC games which have been played for around 10 years competitively. The problem when you (typical/average) gamer thinks that they think the latest madden, halo and other console games which have only been around a couple of years or will be replaced in a couple of years time, how can someone play madden 2009 at a "high" or professional level when it's going to be replaced in 12 months and how can they become professional when it hasn't even been out for a year.

pro gaming and normal gaming are very different, little kids may kick some peoples asses but pro gamers are a complete different league

It is possible do become a pro at the standard annual sports games because the basic gameplay stays the same with a few new features, so they only have to master a small part of the game. Anyway sportsgames tend to beboring to watch and most racing games are too, FPS and RTS is were pro gaming will excel esopescially team based games.

So tell me.. How long would it take you to go pro at Starcraft? Warcraft? Heck, even counter-strike? If it doesn't take long, why aren't you making the thousands of dollars?
Stupid idea considering there are millions and millions of people who could be chosen to play for the countrys unlike lets say hurdlers in which it would be rather easy because you could just go the athletics clubs and race them against each other and besides when I think of olympions I think of athletes not gamers.WozmcfcUsing that logic, there are millions of people who could be chosen to play soccer for a country, therefore, it shouldn't be in the olympics. The problem with your logic is that most of those millions of gamers are not professional. :| And the olympics is not about athletes, it's about competition. There is competition in gaming.
