Yeah what the hell man! Its not like the government has ever taxed any other products.. Oh wait they do.. I think this is an intelligent way to curb the consumption of soda which will have a detriment on our health overall.. While at the same time raises funds to the government.. The tax will probably be 10 cents tops.. Who cares..Can you NOT see the communism in this act? I was just as upset when they banned trans fats.

Yep. That's what people don't get. Yeah he cut taxes for people who already weren't paying any. But then he more than makes up for it by taxing everyone for everyday items.[QUOTE="Mr_Oblivio"]

Anyway, I don't see the big deal with this.

Obama supports it. And the big deal is this admin is starting to tax EVERYTHING. It is getting completely out of control.
[QUOTE="Toriko42"]All I'm gonna say is glad I'm not in that system if they have that Why tax soda, why not just put extra taxes on obese / fat peoplePirate700
It's not for weight loss. It's to generate revenue.
Its for both.. To give revenue and to curb the amount of pop being consumed.. They do this for Tobbacco and Alochol as well.. I think its a good idea because as the person said you are replying to, stuff like heart diease and obesity is a huge health threat.. And pop is a very popular comdiity that contributes to that.[QUOTE="Toriko42"]All I'm gonna say is glad I'm not in that system if they have that Why tax soda, why not just put extra taxes on obese / fat peoplePirate700

Oh, who cares. You pay a few pennies more for your soda. Big deal. The stuff is terrible for you anyway.
When they raised the tax for alcohol, it was more than a few cents. Soda is not like Alochol.. People will pay alot of money to get alochol.. Soda gives little to no kinds of addictions or needs with in culture... They will not tax it heavily due to the fac that it would severely cut their profits, rather than just alittle.I'm tired of the government stealing money from people. First the government gave away billions of our tax dollars to auto companies, and then they fail. I think those auto companies should be dishing out some free cars to people elligible. Now they want MORE money from us? No way!

The point is this is Obama's deal. He is spending us into oblivion so he is countering it by taxing everything. Pretty soon there will be a bread tax and a toothpaste tax also. It adds up. He makes it look like he is saving folks money with his income tax cut but then sneaks in taxes everywhere else. We end up paying more under his plan.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not going to detrimentally affect peoples' lives if they continue their regular soda intake, but it does have the potential to positively affect peoples' lives if they consume less soda. If you're feeling a financial crunch because of increased soda prices, then you've got bigger problems than soda to address in your life. Right now, I go to grocery store and soda is cheaper than bottled water. It's ridiculous. We've got a health crisis on our hands with obesity, and quite frankly, most people are too damn stupid to do anything about it unless they're given direct incentive to do it. I fully support any government initiative that is aimed at making healthy food choices cheaper than unhealthy food choices.
If anyone plans to balance the budget even without bailouts... they're going to have to raise taxes. Republican, Democrat. No sensible way around it.I'm tired of the government stealing money from people. First the government gave away billions of our tax dollars to auto companies, and then they fail. I think those auto companies should be dishing out some free cars to people elligible. Now they want MORE money from us? No way!

It's cause bottled water is the greatest scam of all time[QUOTE="Toriko42"] It's cause bottled water is the greatest scam of all timepianist
Agreed. But it doesn't change the fact that unhealthy food choices are very often less expensive than stuff which is crappy for you.
Very true. Having healthier foods aroung the house cost much more than the crap most people consume. On topic, the soda tax might not be a big deal in itself, but considering virtually everything is being taxed, it's getting a little absurd. Over time, there will only be more taxes. More money for the government. Yet, our government gives money to failed companies and is contributing to our rising debt which is well over a trillion dollars.Oh yeah, thats really gonna prevent obesity. Great thinking Congress! While you're at it, why don't you tax the air we breathe?
Yeah why don't they tax bottled water instead of soda? It would be a real wake-up call to how stupid the idea of it really is.
Um no people that are on gamespot are not "most people" in general. The U.S. is the world leader in paying money for bottled water.
they tax everything so it doesnt surprise me I even heard they were going to start taxing clothing in my state.
Congress considers a lot of things. But there is a reason why it is called "Congress" rather than "Progress". -Sun_Tzu-True. These penalty taxes are all just padding the pockets of the politicians for their pet projects rather than actually do something worthwhile like providing for everyone to go for routine physicals for free so that can see how their life may be hurting them. They do nothing to fix the actual problem. That said, it won't happen, at least not right now.
While I wouldn't be hurting since I've only drank maybe two sodas this month, a tax like this would hurt everyone that drank sodas, not just the fatties. It's just a cash grab.good, maybe this will help America with it's obesity epidemic.

Yeah, excise taxes never help curb behavior, they're just another way for the government to fund their agencies.
