Not sure if I should've posted this in the Prop 8 thread, but I figured it deserved it's own thread. In any event.....

HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut's Supreme Court ruled Friday that gay couples have the right to marry, making the state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions. The ruling comes just weeks before Californians go to the polls on a historic gay-marriage ballot question, the first time the issue will be put before voters in a state where same-sex couples are legally wed.

The 4-3 ruling is the first time that a state that had willingly offered an alternative to marriage was told by a court that civil unions aren't enough to protect the rights of gay couples. Connecticut was the first state to voluntarily pass laws to affirm civil unions.

.....

Will this hurt the passing of "Proposition 8"?

As usual though, Americans are quick to forget about the values this country was founded upon and would rather live in a life that is more suitable to them themselves as individuals.

What the word they have for that? Selfish!?

This still wont fly for all of America. a majority of American support giving gay couples equal rights but not marriage. Many Americans support civil unions that would guarantee the same rights as a married couple.

America was founded on the idea of individualism. Pursuit of happness people.

even if it wasn't it Doesn't matter what it was founded on. What matters is what is right not tradition or being a slave to the past. Gay people should have the right to marry if they want. Its not getting in your way and its not like they are forcing clegry to perform it.

Religion started marriages. Almost all religions define marriage as between a man and a women. Who is the government to say something different.

What? Who is selfish? How is allowing people to marry selfish?

lol You obviously misread what I typed, or I didn't clarify.

What i mean is that it's selfish to not want them to marry. The people opposing gay marriage can bring up whatever reason they can come up with, but I believe that in reality, it's just that they're not comfortable with the idea of Woman & Woman or Man & Man in matrimony. I say it's selfish because I'm sure they know as much as we do that, gay couples marrying isn't going to affect the opposers lifestyle or anyone elses for that matter. It's not going to get in the way of anything, but because they're not used to it, it gets condemned by so many trying to hide behind the bible's supposed reason just to not seem so shallow that they just can't accept it.

The gay couples, they just want to be recognized as a married and whatever falls behind that, like the rest of the world(for those that want marriage). What's wrong with that? Absolutely nothing. Right?

To you then, what's the difference?

On paper there is no difference but through the act of creating two different types of union based on sexuality you create inequality. Civil Union is an insult. I don't want to civil unionize my wife I want to marry her!

Its like the seperate but equal crap during segregation. It doesn't matter if the black drinking fountain is the same as the white one the act of creating two different fountains because one class shouldn't drink from the other one is insulting. Gay people should be able to have the same Marrige as us.

Civil unions are just another way of seperating people.

I say that Civil Unions are just acknowledgements that you 2 are "going out/steady/boyfriend-girlfriend etc"

Marriage is the big deal most people yearn for, be it only through the court or a full blown wedding ceremony.

The first amendment to the Constitution should allow same-sex marriage to be legal everywhere in the US. Saying so otherwise is imposing a religious decision on a legal preceding and thus violates the first amendment.

And whoever invented it, would be opposed to two dudes mounting each other.

Homosexuality was widely practiced during those times...

Right. Weren't the Greeks from back them supposedly all into it? Namely around the Spartans and such time periods?

The society of Sparta is very fasinating, in the sense its the earliest reference of a communistic country.. Basically every person is body and sole for their polis, Sparta. Their goals, their memories, their actions, are all for Sparta.. Men basically at birth are groomed to be spartan warriors.. The child isn't the mother's its Sparta's.. Basically they trained till around 20.. Which their final test was to sneak into the city and kill a slave with out being caught..

Basically they had groups of some 20 men in each unit for 15 straight years.. No women.. Homosexuality was expected and used to strengthen the loyalty of the army from one another to fight that much harder for ones they loved next to them.. At age 30 they were not on call for the army inless dire circumstances.. They were givne land, were finally able to marry, and were put in a conuncil of men to vote.. Everything was for Sparta.. Alot of historians actually believe homosexuality depicted in the bible is not the homosexuality the authors intended.. That they were narrowing it down to go against men and boy relationships.. Who knows though.
