I find it's mainly for high school kids who think it's cool to be those kids who have to be different. However, there's is good death metal, but it usually verges on the line of technical death metal or melodic death metal such as Dark Tranquility. But yes, for the most part DM is pretty boring, and the fans can be elitists (then again, that applies for a lot of metal fans no matter what subgenre of metal it may be).
Honestly there's a range of quality within death metal. There's a lot of crap in it, some of it is as you describe. But you also have really good death metal, for example this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAJQOeCSs_o) (of course there's more I'm just lazy and don't feel like posting a lot of links :P).
There are some gems out there. Vader, Anata, Decapitated, Death, and Gorguts to name a few. I think when it comes to listening to it, you just gotta get used to the speed. At first, all the songs kinda sound the same. -Tish-I find this is true for rap, as well. I can listen to eminem and understand everything he says fine, because I've been listening to him for six or seven years now. Other artists I have a hard time following what they say because they rap too fast. Everything is an acquired taste that you have to get used to to enjoy.
death metal and screamo are my 2 most hated genres and whoever likes them should be put to death for being a disease to societyDr_Yeezy_3000
and what kind of music do you like?
Where's the good death metal you speak of, it sure as hell isn't Dark Tranquility. As for OP, I listen to death metal as it's a pleasure to listen to.I find it's mainly for high school kids who think it's cool to be those kids who have to be different. Well they not exactly DM anymore, but Fiction and Character are both really good albums.
Most death metal and deathcore I don't like because it kind of sounds like random notes. Vocals in deathcore are usually irritating
really depends on the band.
I like ingested and a few others but a few bands like Deicide im not fond of at all.

I find it very disturbing and with 0 musicality. [QUOTE="Dr_Yeezy_3000"]death metal and screamo are my 2 most hated genres and whoever likes them should be put to death for being a disease to societyiskeethuntersYep. I believe so too. At least Bieber tries to sing, not yell and bash instruments.
Necrophagist and death would like a word with you.
The bass in Only Ash remains or fermented offal discharge is immensse same goes for their guitar work its immense but its not bright to say they bash instruments when necrophagists about :P

Thank you for mentioning Necrophagist as well as Death. Necrophagist is an insanely technical death metal band. Anyone who doubts that should listen to this.
I always roll my eyes at threads like this. The TC was horribly ambiguous, failing to even name off bands so the thread has a jumping point for accurate conversation. But instead we have many people in here commenting on death metal who likely couldn't name a death metal band if someone had a gun to their head. Or worse still, think a band like Slipknot constitutes as death metal.

Its a shame Necrophagist is a terribly underrated band purely cause of the death metal tag :( there is some really brutal stuff kicking around the Glasgow/British scene these days couple of straight up brutal bands herre like Cerebral bore and Ingested but they have changed a fair bit over the years but still love em :P
I was gonna throw some brain drill in here then i thought i cba :( i might post some bore but then i would only fuel even more ah but they just smash instruments despite their stuff being a little slower and more geaared for slamming :P
cerebral bore
There's no definitive answer, it's a matter of opinion. This thread will just turn into another useless argument between people who like it and people who don't.PernicioEnigmayep
I used to be an anti-advocate for the "growl" genres of metal, calling it un-musical. Now I'm knee deep in groove metal with Pantera and Sepultura and finding myself wanting faster, harder and stronger music every day. Like all music, it is an acquired taste... but DAMN does it blow traditional styles of rock out of the water. Well, at least for me. And I say to anyone who calls it un-musical: "A pox upon thee!" Because it most certainly is musical... just in a non-traditional way. Much like rock-and-roll was to music 60 years ago.foxhound_fox
Tis the truth. There's a reason why metal is often compared to cIassical.

and jazz especially some death metal, cant remember who said it but theres a lot of crossover in skill/ability with death metal and jazz when it comes down to the meat and bones of the song.
I have never understood how someone can listen to music like this without reflecting on how wrong it sounds. If you are focusing on the literature aspects of music instead of the actual music/aural qualities, then doesn't that just indicate immediately to you that you are clearly doing something wrong and not listening to great music? Lyrics just seem so unimportant and restricting at the same time when it comes to music, where the focus is supposed to be on the actual sounds being made...at the same time the lyrics in music are still not close to reaching the heights of actual literature in most cases.I don't like death metal. If I can't understand the lyrics, then it's probably not the genre for me.

I'll be the first to admit there is A LOT of bad death metal, which doesn't have poppy, or catchy elements to potentially redeem it. But a lot of death metal just sounds really interested, varied, and unpredictable. Its aggressive, its heavy, its dark. Like someone else said you kind of have to expose yourself to it to "get it" I, probably like most other death metal fans, used to hate it
Try listening to:::
Hard Tier: Gorguts, Opeth, Septic Flesh, Gojira, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Nile
Easy Tier: Atheist, Cynic, Death, Amon Amarth, Wintersun, possibly Carcass
Focus on the riffs at first, and how the songs for the most part don't have a verse:chorus:verse: chorus type structure
What kind of music do you like TC?
There's nothing random about the notes. Just listen to a piano cover of an Immolation song. Most death metal and deathcore I don't like because it kind of sounds like random notes. Vocals in deathcore are usually irritating

No lie, that was pretty cool. :P
The cover of Tornado of Souls is also pretty awesome.
