You need to read up the quantum world abit more, at that level things are VERY different to the big world and yes the laws of physics do break down at the very smallest level.

The laws of physics apply to our universe

That is the reason our universe is the way it is and we can make observations all around that justify this theory
The only place that the laws of physics break down are;
A-Inside the event horizon of a black hole
B-Outside our universe
A black hole is singularity, outside our universe is...outside our universe. Otherwise, everything else, follows what we follow.
If its a large scale object, it follows relativity. It its extremely tiny, it follows Quantum Mechanics (the science that works when it shouldn't)

They don't match up with the Theory of Relativity because we haven't found a way to apply gravity (the missing force) to the quantum world. Discovering the Higgs-Boson (the particle that essentially gives everything mass through the Higgs Field) is a HUGGGEEE step closer to linking Relativity and Quantum Mechanics into Quantum Gravity. The laws do not break down, they just follow a different set which we do not fully understand yet.

So would you say it's impossible for there to be alien life forms that are maybe masses of energy or just a conscious mass of some sort or like a liquid life form or would they have to be silicon carbon etc based?

Life needs a tonne of luck to start
Right sized sun, right sized planet, orbiting not too far or not too close (Goldilocks zone [Same applies to our sun around the galaxy]), a tonne of water, having a moon isn't known to be a prerequisite (but it helped us), likewise with Jupiter (massive gas giant that essentially is our shield from the Kuiper Belt drift aways)

For the second part
Mass = Energy
And we can't really rule them out, but they aren't likely

Not even close, dude. Firstly, none of the people quoted have actually said that non carbon based life is possible. And even if they did make such claims, the article doesn't provide any evidence to support it. That whole article is just speculation, a case of "maybe, who knows? We probably shouldn't rule it out."

Well, call me an agnostic on the issue. If it were true though, I'd be terrified if they landed or something. Think of all the ruckus that would be accompanied with an alien invasion.

Ideas and speculation aren't frowned upon. What's frowned upon is taking ideas and spevulation that have nothing tangible to support them, and then treating them too seriously just because they haven't been proven false.

Like...you keep harping on what Stephen Hawking says. I realize that the man is one of the most brilliant minds of our time, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't also do baseless speculation. He is, after all, HUMAN, even though he sounds like a robot. He can come up with ideas and speculations just like everyone else, but how are his speculations any more valid than anyone else's when no one has any actual EVIDENCE to support them? Speculation and ideas are definitely encouraged, but they aren't worth very fucking much without the evidence to support them. This is true regardless of if you're Stephen hawking or a cashier at Home Depot.

@MrGeezer: I know he's only speculating he is just expressing his views his ideas about what might be possible when it comes to alien life. I was just using his views to show he thinks what I think, that alien life "could be" based on other elements and not just carbon and silicon.

Basically; planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies and the universe all exist because of these laws

My original point which led me to my thoughts was why assume aliens would be similar to us. They could have completely different way of life to us.

Do photons have mass? Yes, yes they do...because they have momentum. They do not however have rest mass, meaning once you remove the momentum (bringing it to rest), there's nothing there.
