I will now show you how completely absurd letting gay marriage go to a vote is

Take this statement posted by robo_jesus

"I know why. Because people have different viewpoints. Some people want gay marriage while some dont. There happens to be more that dont in this democracy a lot of us live in."

Now lets change a the subject in question

"I know why. Because people have different viewpoints. Some people wantdiscrimination against african americanswhile some dont. There happens to be more that do in this democracy a lot of us live in."

Letting human rights violations be acceptable because of the tyranny of the majority is just wrong.

Guybrush_3

Discrimination because of color is unconstitutional. Thats why it would never happen again. Unfortunately there is nothing in the constituiton about gays. It sounds like we need another amendment huh?

Is it really that hard to believe that more people did not want same sex marriage despite the propaganda? I can believe there was propaganda but c'mon. How do you know how many votes were changed by propaganda and were sincere?

The polls showed that most people were opposed to Proposition 8 before the commercials showed up.

To all who say that not allowing same sex couples to get married is discrimination, here is what you need to know.

1. Nobody is denying them their right to get married, they can get married to a person of the opposite sex just as legally as you and I can.

They are being denied the right to marry the person they love.:|

3. Marriage is defined as the union of 1 man and 1 woman. Not 2 women to 1 man, or 3 men to 3 women, or 2 dogs, a cat, my neighbors elephant, a hippopotamus and a reindeer to 1 man, or 1 man to a little boy. If you open the doors up to same sex marriage, then you are also opening it up to polygamy (not the last 2 examples as they are a bit extreme, but from a definitional stand point it is kind of hypocritical to accept that gay people are only attracted to members of their sex, but not accept that pedophiles are only attracted to children.)

Oh for the love of god people, enough with the ******* slippery slope fallacy, it makes you look stupid.:|

4. The reason why married couples get breaks from the government is because the whole point of marriage is to have children. When you have children, you usually buy them clothes, food, toys, etc. and all of that taxable stuff is a source of revenue for the government, and it is money that would not have been spent if they werent married with kids.

I suppose infertile couples shouldn't be allowed to marry then either huh?:|

Its not the same thing. Nobody is denying gay people their right to get married. They can marry someone of the opposite sex just as easily as you and me. What they are trying to do is change the definition of marriage to be able to marry whoever you want, and when you do that you open the doors up to polygamy, etc.

but you're saying that one specific religion OWNS the word marriage. that's not true and therefore any church that allows gays to be married is opposed by the law.

taking the constitution out of the question. Is discrimintation right or wrong?

Guybrush_3

Why stop there. If a person wants to marry a donkey. Then it's not hurting anyone is it. Let them do what they want. Extend the law to marry your pets and give them the same rights as humans unless you are discriminating against the animal kind. Let man and his sheep get together.

If a person wants to marry themselves because they love themselves let that be so and give them the rights of a married couple. Not hurting anyone is it?

Animals can't consent. Stop assuming that legalising same-sex marriage will somehow pave the way to every other form of marriage known to man. It won't. And you know it won't.

You obviously dont know the power of propaganda especially in an issue that took people years to feel comfortable with and right on the cutting edge of changing the general publics opinion and ridding them of prejudices.

I am not claiming to know for sure that without the propaganda the voting would have different result, but the propaganda itself shows the means people will use to fight against something and how gay people are frowned upon in general with the result being discrimination.

Teenaged

How can ANYBODY do that?

We can all just say all the crazy things we want. The only thing you are doing with my points is replying affirmatively no matter what. Soon, you will tell me that "sure, anybody can fall in love with someone of the same sex, why not". Lets stop with the absurd claims and lets get real.

Heterosexual men do not get aroused merely at the sight of another man.

Teenaged

Again I will refer to Human Rights that are to my perception above any constitution. And if a contitution violates those rights then it must be revised.

Plus homosexual marriage is absent from the constitution but not against it.

Teenaged

Yes, because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

It got amended after a long long long while though. What about gay marriage or gays in general? Is there anything in the constitution about gays? Probably not so that means we need another amendment that says what we should do about the gay community.

I'd like to say that all the people that use the slippery slope argument are making my side look better.

I say that the government should not recognize ANY marriages.

Why are people that say they love each other be treated any different than "single" people?

I think its unconstitutional to treat "single" people different than "married" or "united" people.

Rob0_Jesus

I am a homosexual and I dont get aroused by the opposite sex in any way. Doesnt it logically follow that the reversed is true for heterosexuals.

Also most people around me are heterosexuals. If what you claim is so common wouldnt I know about it? Not for specific people. Even as a rumour.

Then it needs an amendment. We can agree on that cant we?

Rob0_Jesus

Of course it does.

The point though is that you cant refer to the constitution as to what is right or wrong as if the constitution is not prone to criticismor changes.

[QUOTE="Natural_Genius"][ 1 2. [QUOTE="Natural_Genius"] We dont always marry the ones we love, just look at the divorce rates. Plus some marry for SES (Anna Nicole) and some are in an arranged marriage.

A straight couple making a mistake is not a valid argument. A straight person *can* marry the person they love. As it is, a gay person cannot.

We dont always marry the ones we love, just look at the divorce rates. Plus some marry for SES (Anna Nicole) and some are in an arranged marriage. Natural_Genius
The divorce might as well mean that there was love but that it faded in time. Marriage did happen because of love though.

The point still stands that people get married because they love each other. Individual cases dont prove anything here, avatar_genius. ;)

I'd like to say that all the people that use the slippery slope argument are making my side look better.

teddyrob

Could you explain the slippery slope argument to me, which side are you on if any?

Slippery slope is when you say "if x thing happens, bad thing y can happen."

I am a homosexual and I dont get aroused by the opposite sex in any way.

Not even if they rub you the right way? Cllose your eyes is a hand got a sexuality?

My bad. I should say "merely at the sight of the opposite sex". Wrong wording from my part.

[QUOTE="Natural_Genius"]1.First of all you spelled color wrong (No "our" brit, get it right).Natural_Genius

If he is a Brit then he has spelt COLOUR correct.

I know that, but the Brits need to learn that they are spelling things wrong and change it. I know that they spell colour when it should be color, armour when it should be armor, and mettle when it should be metal, the point is they need to change, just like nobody uses the word Thou anymore

Stop being ethnocentric.

Maybe they fall out of love. The other partner may be playing away. Other reasons such as problems with money, life etc get in the way. There are many reasons why people divorce and they may still love each other as some get back together and remarried.

slippery slope is when they say "if we let THIS happen, it won't be long before THAT happens."

I'm against the recognition of marriage by the government.

There should be NO benefits for getting married by law because it treats "single" people differently.
