Yes. Always. I know that the theater's profits on tickets are razor thin, so most of their money comes from concessions, and I want them to stay in business. Plus a soda and popcorn are part of the experience for me.

Lord_Daemon

Yeah that's pretty much me as well, although it's not so much me having a concern over the major chain theatres that I go to surviving as I just think it's part of the movie going experience.

Oh I have no concern about the chain theaters, but the one I go to here is a local owned mom-n-pop.

They have "kids meal" type things at my theater, I get those sometimes. It's like a small soda, small popcorn, a candy for like 5 bucks.

I'll normally bring a bottle of water with me because the ones being sold there are like $4. I generally don't feel the need to stuff my face with artery-clogging popcorn, nor do I care to contribute to the obnoxious chomping noises you hear during quiet scenes.

And while I'm on the subject, people who clap and cheer during movies are as$holes.

I normally try to see things around midday a few weeks after it comes out for that reason. But some friends wanted to see The Avengers on opening day. Needless to say, the entire theater erupted into applause no less than like eight times.

I don't particularly like popcorn, especially not theater popcorn. I will often buy a large drink and share it with whoever I'm with, and am bad so I sneak in food. Occasionally candy, but usually stuff they don't sell. Like strudels or cheeseburgers.

Unfortunately their programming is pretty much on par with the huge chains. I'd hope being a small indie they'd go a little outside the norm, but I guess they gotta go with what will maximize receipts.

To answer the OP, most of the time. Doesn't feel right to watch a movie on the big screen without some popcorn and a large (or XX large if you know what I mean) drinks.

Sometimes a drink. Never a popcorn. I never know when I'll get thirsty, but I NEVER have a problem going two hours without food. Anyway, I don't always buy food and drink, but I NEVER sneak them in. Assuming that I actually like watching movies at the theater (which I obviously do, or else I wouldn't be there), then I should obviously do my part to make sure that I am still able to do that. Theaters charge $7 for 80 cents worth of popcorn for a good reason, and it's not just greed. A huge percentage of ticket sales go right to the movie studios, leaving theaters to cover their costs otherwise. If enough people stop paying for ridiculously oversized drinks and snacks, then either ticket sales will go up, or lots of theaters will end up just plain getting shut down. I pay to see a movie, then that's all I need to pay for. I don't need to eat or drink while doing so. But if I do get hungry or thirsty, then I absolutely buy their food/drink rather than sneak in my own. I might not support the things I like, but I sure try not to hurt the things I like.

[QUOTE="spazzx625"]About 1/2 the time because I know how paper thin most theaters profit margins are. http://ycharts.com/rankings/industries/Movie%20Production,%20Theaters/profit_margin

This. They're not charging so much for that stuff because they're greedy, they're doing it (at least partly) because they pretty much have to in order to stay in business. I don't always even consume food/drink while watching movies in te theater. But if I do, I will do so in a way that actually contributes to that theater being able to still stay in business. Of course, the film industry COULD stop taking so much revenue from movies that are seen at theaters. The problem with this is that those companies still have to find a way to fund their movies which often cost more than 100 million dollars. They're the ones making the movies, they've gotta make sure that it pays off. Lower the amount of money that te studios get from ticket sales, and they're going to have to take fewer risks. That means no more stuff like Lord of the Rings or The Avengers. Alternatively, even though those were risky endeavors, they were STILL big "blockbuster" movies. And those are the types of movies that are more guaranteed to do well at the box office. Avatar/Titanic/Spider-Man/Avengers/The Dark Knight...there's something that all of these have in common. They were BIG productions, and it was almost guaranteed that they'd do well before they were even made. These aren't small low-budget films, these are movies with spectacle and mass appeal, and they're the movies that get LOTS of people to go out and buy tickets. Forgetting thebig budget blockbusters, the alternatives are pretty much "standard chick flick", "standard kid's movie", and "standard stoner/raunchy comedy". You know...the stuff that also has a relatively small budget but is also formulaic as hell. In any case, the money has to come from somewhere. I don't need to watch movies and I don't need to eat or drink while watching movies. But if I WANT to do those things, and am going to do so anyway, then I damn sure do it in a way that doesn't diminish my chances of being able to have the same experience later.

I always feel a little bit conflicted about popcorn. On one hand, I obviously want the plae to stay in business, so I feel good about buying popcorn. On the other hand, I've sat next to people eating popcorn, and it can get REALLY annoying. When I do buy popcorn, I often find myself deliberately trying to be as quiet and discreet about its consumption as possible. You know...because I hate rude people, so I'm trying to to be a loud rude eater. Basically, "If you hate something, don't you do it too." But then sometimes I find that I've been trying too hard to not be a jackass, and was thinking more about being courteous than I was thinking about the actual movie.

Always do. I've always buy the drink a larger size than the popcorn since they seem to always oversalt the popcorn and leave me being very thirsty for the rest of the movie. More drink = Less Thirst.

I bring my own food in. I know cinemas don't make much profit from the sale on the tickets but a medium drink/popcorn is just so expensive. Its nearly the same cost as the ticket itself.

I don't think people would enjoy watching movies with a bunch of loud mouth drunks.

There's plenty of loud mouth sober people in there at a given time. A couple beers would quiet people down a lot more than make them more rowdy. With how many theaters are having a hard time keeping their doors open in the 21st century, they need to get with the times in some way and actually make theaters a fun experience again. Selling beer would also greatly increase their profits.
