I don't. It's not that I think patriotism is evil (just qualifying that right now so a bunch of pro-patriotism OT posters don't jump down my throat), I just don't really care about being patriotic. It seems kind of superficial to me, a superficiality that can be seen in the anger that was directed towards Obama when he didn't wear a flag pin of all things. The United States just happens to be the place where I was born, and while I like the country, I am equally concerned about the rest of the world. I remember McCain had a slogan that went "country first". For myself, I would amend that to "humanity first."

That being said, patriotism is important to a nation's survival. But on an individual level, I see no reason to embrace it.

Not really, but I'll support a republic and capitalism over stuff like communism/dictatorship.

Mark Twain said "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it. "

Based on that quote I am a patriot because I support the country and dislike many things about the federal government.

I'm patriotic for the most part. There are some things about this country I don't love, but I suppose you can't please everyone.

I'd put humanity first any day. The idea of taking pride in a place just because you were born there strikes me as somewhat odd. I like certain countries based on how they work and I do like my own country but I wouldn't back them without condition.

This. Even though I like the U.S., there are things I don't like about it. Just blindly supporting everything it does would not be smart on my part. Also GS gltiches abound.

As in I'm proud of where I live? Or some kind of extreme nationalism? I'm not sure I could be proud of any community, since there are always some rotten apples that ruin the bunch.

I don't really understand patriotism. I like my country, but I am not proud of it or anything just because it happens to be where I'm from.

Yes. However what that means I don't know. Canada pride's itself on being multi-cultural and ethnically diverse so I am not in anyway against people coming to my country or leaving it or corrupting a set of values and customs which are so diverse. I like living in Canada though.

Sort of. I dont agree with blindly supporting anything, but I also dont agree with blindly hating on an entire country, either. So I will often defend the US when I feel that people are attacking it out of context, hypocritically,or disproportionately. One thing people fail to understand is that the actions of a government dont always represent the people.

"Patriotism" hems a bit too close to nationalism in so many conceptions for me to ever claim to be patriotic. Am I proud of where I live? Yeah, to an extent. However, I don't believe in American exceptionalism in any form.

so if you are supporting your country and want it to prosper, but you hate the current government and feel it needs a radical change in order to benefit the country, is that patriotism?

It could be. I'd say if you're supporting your country and want it to prosper based on the desire for the people in it to prosper at the same time wanting other country's to prosper as well for the same reasons, that's probably not patriotism. But if one supports their country based on the idea of it or based on loyalty to it, then that would be patriotism.

I wouldn't like to be described as a patriot. Too many negative connotations attached to it IMO. I like my country (UK) and I feel good if it is recognised for doing good things in the world, and I'd like it to progress even more. I don't agree with everything the government does and I would voice any criticisms I had with it.

I'm mostly patriotic to the State, Town, or Region I live in rather than the whole nation. If I haven't seen it, I don't care about it.

Well.. the only people I care about live here in the states. Naturally their way of life and comforts come before anyone else but in order for that to be protected the entire nation needs protected. If you mean, would I put someone's life outside this country below the people that I care about, then yes I would. But i also know that if my country was a true dictatorship like many like to spout, then both myself and my friends wouldn't have the life that we now have. So sure I guess. But then I feel the same way about Canada too. Cause they share our fate...
