There are people who don't believe gravity exists.;) The point of that was to show that nothing is "proven." Not gravity, not evolution, nothing. Unless you count mathematics.

Some fundies change.;) The only reason I asked was because I know that old habits die hard. And it would make you make more sense.

We all do, because we all experience it. What was the point of that? :?

No I was not a "fundie". If I was, wouldn't I still be? Would a fundie be open to the possibility of god not existing to begin with? Can you guys come up with better questions?

If anyone religious DOESN'T doubt that god exists, they are not a rational thinking individual because there is no proof that their god exist.

Depends on what you consider proof......and as I stated...one does need to come to terms with faith....and question it. But that doesn't mean one can't believe.

Yeah....took me all day but I think I finally got through. I don't enjoy posting with him. I do enjoy an exchange of ideas which necessitates differing viewpoints.....but in a mature non insulting way. I think I got him angry with some of my posts....ah well. As long as it worked.

You're absolutely right.

We should move this to TheologyWeb, where people actually know what they're talking about (occasionally).:D

What's that site like?

It's set up with a bunch of forums, named after campus areas. Each forum is used for a specific type of discussion: there is a natural science forum, a philosophy forum (though I've heard that one is a little bad compared to others) and many others. There's a forum for atheists only. . . .and for theists only, and for liberal Christians only, and so on. There are forums for formal debates as well, with extremely long posts made by very smart users. Most of the community is great, but there's a nut here and there.

Check it out if you'd like: http://www.theologyweb.com/campus/

Actually, I'm trying to set up an appointment between him and one of the smartest Christian users there. But I need the other guy's permission first.

Won't do any good. He's not looking to think about it. He wants to just flame religion and anyone that believes. I've tried to have discussions with him and answer questions...but he just insults me back. So I don't think he wants information.

ive wondered. but that's just hypothetical.

God creating everything around us is so logical to me.

plus, believing is SOMETHING is healthier than having faith in nothing at all. It gives you no purpose.

And having faith in yourself, your family, your friends, and the entire human race isn't enough?

I guess like Einstein said everything is relative because from my perspective an adult having an imaginary friend isn't healthy.

Well it's a magical man who is invisible and lives in the sky, I guess it's just semantics as far as what you call someone like that.

But let me ask you why this, there are thousands of gods you could believe in, but I assume you are an atheist in regards to Ra and Thor, so why do you worship this particular god? Is it just because you were raised to believe in him, or was there some kind of logical process that brought you to the conclusion that this was the true god while the others were not?

Usually it comes down to ignorance towards the other gods. Ignorance in the sense that people don't know a thing about them and don't care enough to find out about them.

Option two. I didn't even come to that conclusion until fairly recently.

Oh, and the "invisible man in the sky" silliness has already been addressed, thank you.;)

Usually it comes down to ignorance towards the other gods. Ignorance in the sense that people don't know a thing about them and don't care enough to find out about them.

Arguing with nonbelievers is useless because they can never understand the relationship that some believers have with God. These relationships that I've experienced can't be proven (to others) or disproven (to us). That's why it's a waste of time - one side has a relationship that proves to them beyond a doubt that God exists, while the other side sees absolutely no proof that God exists and will continue to argue that God doesn't exist because of the lack of evidence to them.

God can't be proven to anyone unless they have faith first. You can't approach religion with logic and expect to come out with faith - you must approach with faith first and then you will get some logic out of it. This is something that atheists refuse to do - why, I don't know - some even refuse to believe in His miracles. But as long as that's the case, there is no use arguing this anymore.

In the US at least most atheists were Christian for a sizeable portion of their lives. So yes, most of us understand the "relationship" you have with God because we once thought we had the same relationship. It's just that as we grew up we came to the realization that it didn't actually exist and was nothing more than an expectancy effect. Let me ask you this: Why is that followers of every religion have the same intense religious experiences/oneness with their gods/visions/etc? If your god was the only true god then this shouldn't hold true, only Christians should be the ones who have relationships/emotional experiences with their god.

But let me state this again because so many theists seem to think that all atheists have never been religious in their lives: In religious nations like the UK and US the vast majority of athiests were religious (many devoutly religious) at some point in time, usually up until late adolesence. We're had first hand experiences of faith, we know what it's like, so don't say that we don't understand.

If they understood the relationship, they wouldn't call it blind faith. And many people lose faith because they're believing in the wrong things - instead of continuing to look for what's right, they quit altogether. As for other religions having the same experiences - there's nothing I could say or do to prove to you that what I believe in is indeed correct, because it has to be a first-hand experience. Besides, there is only one true God, and it's possible to find Him even if you believed in another incorrect religion first. Trust me, if you continue to search for God, you will find Him regardless of how/where you started out. God doesn't hide from those who sincerely search for Him - instead, He makes Himself known to those who seek Him. But it's not as easy road - and it could take years, even decades and it will take extreme persistence - something many are unwilling to do, but if you're sincere in your efforts, you will be rewarded.
