TOTAL RECALL is releasing this Friday, but i'm not sure if the movie'll be better than Arnold Schwarzenneger's original movie from 90's.

Hollywood also remade some classi'c 80's movies as FOOTLOOSE, FRIGHT NIGHT, THE THING etc recently.KING KONG comes to mind as well. They also remade and remaking movies from outside America like LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, THE GRUDGE, THE RING especially for American audience.

Thing is do you enjoy "remake" movies or prefer original version as it is?

Personally i prefer original version.I really hate when they remake and ruin classi'c movies.

If you've seen the original, its almost always they're better.

Really it depends, some remakes are good while others are just straight out terrible.

Not typically, no. The only two I really liked were the first Hills Have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw.

Not usually. And there is no way in hell that the new Total Recall will be better than the Arnie original.

It's a remake of a 1932 film of the same name.

The thing is also a great film, although it seems more like a sequel than a remake.

Sometimes yes, often times no. I don't automatically condemn remakes for the sake of it though.

I thought Let Me In was a fantastic film and actually enjoyed it a bit more than Let the Right One In (which I adored in the first place). Same goes for Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Fright Night was also much, much better than the original. :P

I will say Total Recall looks terrible.

And the 1932 film itself was an adaptation of a novel based on Al Capone (for those that say that Hollywood is out of original ideas today).

Not sure if it counts as a remake, but I loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I never seemed to be able to get into the old ones, but that one was right up my alley.

For the record, the 2011 The Thing was not a remake but a prequel to the remake from 1982.

TheFallenDemon

The 1982 film is a remake of The thing from another world, however it seems more like a sequel than a remake. The 2011 film was a remake of the original so that it ties in more to the 1982 film.

It rather confusing.

As for remakes, I really have no problem with them. It can be interesting to see someone else's take on an older story and the results can be good. I view film remakes the same way I view cover versions of songs.

Remakes usually keep the same plot while updating the era and locales to match the current times.

Reboots are meant to ignore original canon and to start anew such as Casino Royale, Batman Begins, and the 2009 Star Trek movie.

Depends. I think there are some movies (like Peter Jackson's LotR and King Kong) that are on par or even better than the remakes. Though Hollywood should really make remakes off of crappy movies but make it 100X better.

No i fvcking hate them for the most part and it seems like one out of every two films coming out is a fvcking remake.

Colin Farrell is Arnie's equivalent apparently

And they are remaking The Running Man, that made me so angry i was almost ill.

I'm generally not a fan of remakes especially those of Asian horror films. For some reason their western counterparts just don't measure up.

I am fine with the Running Man remake as long as it follows Stephen King's original novel instead of the Arnie movie.

If they're just rehashing the Arnold movie instead of making a more faithful adaptation, then yes, I will be very angry.

Unless they took the original out of circulation and then burned the original film so that no more copies can ever be made, then remakes aren't "ruining" anything. That said, I usually don't like remakes. But it has nothing to do with the fact that they are remakes, and everything to do with the fact that they usually just plain suck.

The vast majority of remakes are just churned out for the purposes of making money off name recognition from the original - not because anybody had any worthwhile idea that would actually warrant a new movie being made.

I've liked maybe 5 remakes - out of how many hundred that have been made over the last few years?

I don't get riled up over remakes/reboots/rehashes/reheats/reruns or what have you. Nine times out of ten the original project is still widely available to watch in one form or another, so if the new version sucks, you still got the original to fall back on.

Generally no, but I hated the original Total Recall. Just because I hate a movie doesn't mean that I want a remake, but the story is a good one and the concept for a good movie is there, it just got ruined by REALLY cheesy special effects and Arnold. So yeah, looking forward to TR.

I don't mind them as remakes have been churning out of the movie-making machines since the beginning of movies and though many are crap, you never know when you're going to get something considered the defining version or at least on par with the original like The Letter, The Maltese Falcon, The Thing, The Wizard of Oz, Kongo (1932), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) et. al. Besides which you always have the original or at least the one that's your particular favorite to treasure forever so what's the harm?
