When someone sneezes, do you say bless you?
I do, only with women though.

I do out of habit as it's the polite thing to do. My best friend is an athiest so he always gets wierd when I say it, like it's a religious think ( I don't believe it is).Boba_Fett_3710
I do it out of habit as well, but I never say "God bless you." It bothers me when people say it to me, so I never put it that way. However, I consider it to be polite, even though it's falling to the wayside like holding the door open for someone.

I agree about the bless you part but you never hold the door open for other people? Not even when they are very close behind you? Where I live, people do it all the time.

Hrm, I've had people give me looks like I'm nuts. Maybe cause I'm a girl, but I always do it, regardless of who it is. Some talk of chivalry being dead, but from my point of view I think it's more that being polite is somehow offensive these days. There's no trust in the world anymore.
Every time I think to say it I think of *religious connotation* you and end up saying "The power of Christ compels you..."
just to be different.

Yeah, I do agree that people could do better but where I live, people aren't too bad. At least, they do hold the door open for other people. Infact, it's very common that the person who is behind you will say something to you or give you a weird look if you don't do it. Especially if the door nearly slams into them.
No I say 'gesundheit' because I'm cool like thatbraindead_hero
lol same here. no one knows what it means though.

nah i think it's some kind of wierd voodoo thing. people would say it because they thought they were letting out evil spirits when they sneeze... well maybe that is religious in some way, idk.

When you sneeze, your heart stops for a second. Pagan religions and Native Americans knew this, so when someone sneezed they said "God bless you" just in case their heart didn't start back up again.
That's what I read, anyway.

It's German for good health (you wish someone to be healthy)
which makes more sense imo. And that's what we say where I live. gezondheid = gesundheit

It sounds like a Simpsons quote: "When you sneeze, that's your soul trying to escape. When someone says "God bless you" it sucks it back in."
I say gesundheitkillerfist
I work with a german fellow and when he's around I always say, "Goes in tight" really fast, and he still hasn't caught on because it sounds so similar.:) Any of my friends (or anyone that knows the joke) says, "Sometimes." Always a good giggle.
I say gesundheitkillerfist
Yeah, I say that too.
I hate it when people say "Bless you" or "God bless you" if I sneeze, I reply "No, thank you".
[QUOTE="killerfist"]I say gesundheitElectronicMagic

That equals punching them in the face... Why would you say such a thing?

Because everytime they say it it feels like they just punched me in the face.
Because everytime they say it it feels like they just punched me in the face.
ElectronicMagic
. . . .Because they give you an extremely simple courtesy that has been around for centuries, if not millenia?
Seriously, that's just sad. I might as well get angry at a man who opens a door for a woman because he's implying that she's not strong enough to open a door for herself.

Believe it or not, i've actually heard of people getting angry about things like that. That's the new, prudish, pansified America for you.

Because they brought their religion into it. If they want to say gesundheit, that's different. But "Bless you or god bless you" brings an unwanted element to it for me.
