No, I'll say bless me, but when people say it for someone else I find it oddly annoying, like "I'll bless myself jerk!" lol.

Because everytime they say it it feels like they just punched me in the face.

ElectronicMagic

. . . .Because they give you an extremely simple courtesy that has been around for centuries, if not millenia?

Seriously, that's just sad. I might as well get angry at a man who opens a door for a woman because he's implying that she's not strong enough to open a door for herself.

Because they brought their religion into it. If they want to say gesundheit, that's different. But "Bless you or god bless you" brings an unwanted element to it for me.

Most people who say that aren't even thinking of religion when they say it. They just say it because it's a nice, courteous thing to do. Not because they want to force religion down your throat.

They do not mean anything by by it. There is no reason to get angry. Like people who get mad or offended when people say merry Christmas instead of happy holidays.

I just would rather be told gesundheit or nothing at all. I actually prefer nothing at all. I don't see why people do it whenever someone sneezes, I rarely say anything. It's an empty gesture.

I typically don't say anything. If it's really quiet, however, I'll sometimes say "God bless you sweet child!" just for the reaction.

I'm athiest and I say it, because it's just a courtesy. You must have some real self esteem issues if that upsets you.

Do you also get upset when someone says "goddamn it"? :|

I'd prefer nothing at all or "Happy Holidays". That why it doesn't exclude people like me who are Atheists.

I don't use "goddamnit", when people say it doesn't bother me unless they direct it towards me. As in "goddamn you". "goddamn it" isn't being directed towards me, like "god bless you" is.

I agree with what you're saying. It's a nice gesture and that's why a simple "thanks" would suffice. Even if you aren't religious.

Well, there are some people who actually see it as a nice thing to do (I think I just repeated myself). Also, most everyone (here anyway) was brought up to say bless you when someone sneezes. It's not that big of a deal anyway, it doesn't last more than a couple seconds. Just say thanks and be on your way.

No one is trying to exclude you. I celebrate Christmas and I am an atheist. No one is trying to offend you ans it is silly to be offended by something with very good intentions.

When self-esteem has nothing to do with it, yeah that's a pretty good answer to give to someone who insists their is some connection, when there isn't.

They do not mean anything by by it. There is no reason to get angry. Like people who get mad or offended when people say merry Christmas instead of happy holidays.

If they want to say something to me, it's gesundheit or nothing at all(which I prefer). Happy holidays should be the norm nowadays, I don't like it when someone says "Merry Christmas" to me either. I'd prefer nothing at all or "Happy Holidays". That why it doesn't exclude people like me who are Atheists.

No one is trying to exclude you. I celebrate Christmas and I am an atheist. No one is trying to offend you ans it is silly to be offended by something with very good intentions.

I just don't like the fact that they can't say "Happy Holidays" or nothing at all. I prefer nothing at all. I hate being people presuming me to be a Christian.

[QUOTE="DivergeUnify"]No no no, I disagree. Someone who feels like they're being punched in the face when someone says "bless you", because they're "bringing their religion into it" clearly has self-esteem issues :|DivergeUnify

Disagree all you want, self-esteem is completely irrelevant in this case.

I wouldn't expect any other answer from you

When self-esteem has nothing to do with it, yeah that's a pretty good answer to give to someone who insists their is some connection, when there isn't.

I know it's a good answer, that's why I wrote it :|

You didn't say my answer was a good one, you simply said you didn't expect any other kind of answer from me. So I replied that my answer to what you said, was a good one under the circumstances. I don't know what you were implying by "I wouldn't expect any other answer from you" but it came off negatively.

sometimes, and it depends if i know the person. or how close i am. and if somebody else says "bless you" first, then yeah u dont wanna sound like an echo.

in reality, i think its the most pointless tradition and people need to stop saying it OR expecting others to say it. a sneeze is a sneeze, its nothing u need to be "blessed" for. I dont even believe in blessings. LOL

i only say it in some cases because it's a social norm. if i dont think the person cares if i say it or not, i wont say it.

I have plenty of times before, especially around people I just met. When they find out, they are pretty shocked and had assumed all along that I was of their religion. In-fact I have lost a few friends after they found out that I'm an Atheist. It doesn't bother me that they are no longer my friends, just makes me wish they would assume I was something because they are.

Most are not presuming that you are. A lot of non-christians celebrate Christmas . And "bless you" or "god bless you" are not phrases meant solely for Christians or anyone who believes in a god.

Nope, unless I was actually talking to that person and we are 'friends'.

I've had many assume I was Christian before. They may not think about it when they say it because it's a social norm, but I politely decline their "blessing" and explain that I'm an Atheist.

What can you do when people stop being friends with you when they find out that you are an Atheist? It's alright with me, just shows what kind of people they are and who my true friends are.

When someone sneezes, do you say bless you?

I do, only with women though.

Discuss.
