. . . .Because they give you an extremely simple courtesy that has been around for centuries, if not millenia?
Seriously, that's just sad. I might as well get angry at a man who opens a door for a woman because he's implying that she's not strong enough to open a door for herself.
Because they brought their religion into it. If they want to say gesundheit, that's different. But "Bless you or god bless you" brings an unwanted element to it for me.
Most people who say that aren't even thinking of religion when they say it. They just say it because it's a nice, courteous thing to do. Not because they want to force religion down your throat.[QUOTE="Dracargen"][QUOTE="ElectronicMagic"]Because everytime they say it it feels like they just punched me in the face.

They do not mean anything by by it. There is no reason to get angry. Like people who get mad or offended when people say merry Christmas instead of happy holidays.

Not because they want to force religion down your throat.I just would rather be told gesundheit or nothing at all. I actually prefer nothing at all. I don't see why people do it whenever someone sneezes, I rarely say anything. It's an empty gesture.

Oh wow they brought their religion into it. How offensive :roll:I'm athiest and I say it, because it's just a courtesy. You must have some real self esteem issues if that upsets you.
Do you also get upset when someone says "goddamn it"? :|

If they want to say something to me, it's gesundheit or nothing at all(which I prefer). Happy holidays should be the norm nowadays, I don't like it when someone says "Merry Christmas" to me either. I'd prefer nothing at all or "Happy Holidays". That why it doesn't exclude people like me who are Atheists.

I have no self-esteem issues, I don't see how self-esteem would be relevant in this case. For me, it's not a courtesy, just an empty gesture.
I don't use "goddamnit", when people say it doesn't bother me unless they direct it towards me. As in "goddamn you". "goddamn it" isn't being directed towards me, like "god bless you" is.

I agree with what you're saying. It's a nice gesture and that's why a simple "thanks" would suffice. Even if you aren't religious.

Well, there are some people who actually see it as a nice thing to do (I think I just repeated myself). Also, most everyone (here anyway) was brought up to say bless you when someone sneezes. It's not that big of a deal anyway, it doesn't last more than a couple seconds. Just say thanks and be on your way.[QUOTE="DivergeUnify"]No no no, I disagree. sometimes, and it depends if i know the person. or how close i am. and if somebody else says "bless you" first, then yeah u dont wanna sound like an echo.
in reality, i think its the most pointless tradition and people need to stop saying it OR expecting others to say it. a sneeze is a sneeze, its nothing u need to be "blessed" for. I dont even believe in blessings. LOL
i only say it in some cases because it's a social norm. if i dont think the person cares if i say it or not, i wont say it.

I have plenty of times before, especially around people I just met. When they find out, they are pretty shocked and had assumed all along that I was of their religion. In-fact I have lost a few friends after they found out that I'm an Atheist. It doesn't bother me that they are no longer my friends, just makes me wish they would assume I was something because they are.

Most are not presuming that you are. A lot of non-christians celebrate Christmas . And "bless you" or "god bless you" are not phrases meant solely for Christians or anyone who believes in a god.

I've had many assume I was Christian before. They may not think about it when they say it because it's a social norm, but I politely decline their "blessing" and explain that I'm an Atheist.
