You have to ask yourself, what would happen if you was five minutes late to work? If the answer is anything other than being fired or suspended I want to know what kind of job you think you're going to get. If they don't punish you then you have no incentive to do the right thing. You need to be on time. If you can't handle being on time you can always drop out and get a GED, which will pretty much lower your job and college options.

I used to be where you were, got a few Friday evening detentions for it. The way we did detention they made us go into the cafeteria and line our chairs up in a straight line. Then we just sat there one behind another for two hours from 3:45 PM to 5:45 PM. Eventually they increased it to three hours. Sucked to be me on those days...

People very rarely get any type of punishment for being 5-10 minutes late at my job. If they do it regularly (let's say 3 or more times), something is usually said to them by management. However, people with good sales results don't get punished for much of anything they do.

Back when I was in High School we had to get a little paper for being late. Every morning there was a whole line of people and it would take like 5-10 minutes to get your turn. We'd be late even more, it was so deficient and idiotic. I just couldn't take High School seriously.

LustForSoul

Thats how it was at mine. You had to go to the attendance office and get your tardy slip.

At my old high school, too many tardies meant you'd fail a class.

You must have a laid-back job, every job I worked at gave you a few warnings and you were out the door. Don't even get me started on what the Army does when you're late. This is assuming you don't have a legitimate excuse such as car trouble or an unexpected doctor's visit.

Learn to be on time. It's not that hard. If you have to get up earlier just to make it to class ahead of time, by all means do so. It'll be good practice for the real world when you have to be on time for things.

Explain. And if this is occurring in Canada or the US, then those cultures need to adapt to the country they are living in.

When i got out of high school i had 31 detentions and 7 Saturday schools racked up. The person who was in charge of tardies, dt's ect ect always asked me when i was coming i just looked at him and laughed and said sure. He tried talk to my mother couple times but that don't work on me either. He went to the principal couple times to talk to me. I told her stop wasting my time with bullS that's not going do anything to help me. they finally both shut up about them because they knew they couldn't get me to go. I Liked them both i had nothing against them BUT it wasn't happening.

I guess... but they really need to put punishment to tardiness in college (well, my college at least). There are tons of people waiting to get in a class that is full and Johnny boy comes in 30 minutes after class has started. If you have too many tardies in college you should be dropped like you would for being absent.

I wish this was the case at my old high school, because I could arrive 10 minutes or 5 minutes early to the bus stop but either way I was at the mercy of when the school bus came. I generally never got any late notices unless I completely missed the bus and had to walk 45 minutes to get to class.

[QUOTE="UniverseIX"][QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]Children have to learn about being on time. If that involves getting up even earlier, then so be it. If you have to be at school for 07:00, then doesn't that mean you get off at 15:00? Go to bed at 21:00 if you have to get up so early.

not all cultures agree with you with what it means to be on time.

If we're talking about showing up to a party or something, sure I'd agree with you. But this is school we're talking about. A structured environment.

1. Each school handles stuff differently. Your school may have been lax but where I went to high school if I missed a detention it was an automatic two day suspension. If you got into a fistfight you was expelled unless it was completely self-defense. They were just looking for people to make examples out of so the rest of the school would behave.

2. A GED alone is almost worthless. Some jobs won't take you and you can't even get into most branches of the military with one. The Army will take you with one but will require you to have higher ASVAB scores and they give you a criminal waiver if you need one unless you have a semester of college under your belt. But you're right about the college part. Technically, you could drop out of school, get a GED, get straight As for two years in a community college, and use your associates to get into an Ivy league school. But they're usually the exception to the rule. Or, you could be like Katy Perry by getting a GED and becoming famous.

Every school I've been to considered it an excused tardy if you was late due to the school bus being late. It was unexcused if you was late due to your own negligence.

Yeah, my High School did that as well. It's basicly like saying, "You're late, now go waste even more time before you can come in." It's ridiculous.

A lot of my teachers didn't bother with it though, but some followed it very strictly, and others were just random. And if you are too late, they just don't let you in at all.

Well, yeah. They shouldn't get comfortable with getting to school late. We don't want kids feeling like its ok to be late for work or any other appointments. They are given enough time to get up and leave. Not the school fault if they want to hang out all night instead of getting rest....

At my high school the doors were locked five minutes after class started, and if you were later than that you just couldn't get in at all, unless you had a parent/guardian call ahead or sign you in, or some sort of emergency. Instead you had to go and sit in the cafeteria and stare at the ceiling for the class hour, because you know, that is obviously more productive then just letting them into class. Students that made a habit of this would get detentions, and then day suspensions.

I think some sort of penalty is necessary, though. Otherwise there would be kids that wouldn't even try to get to class on time. I mean, if I knew I wouldn't get in trouble I would have been late all the time.

my school really didn't enforce any strict rules about being late, but then again most kids were rarely late anyway. except this one guy, who was late about 90% of the time. the school eventually called his parents to ask what was wrong. nothing was wrong, he just didn't like getting up early. on topic: yeah i think they should be punished. most schools do punish but their policy seems fair.

@K2theswiss Obviously getting up early wasnt my problem. I can get ready fine. My dad is as I said usually out doing things, and doesnt get home to take me untill like 6:45 or something. If I told him to "get his butt up" He'd "tear my butt up." My dad is overprotective and doesnt like me riding with others and he's way to cheap to pay for the bus.

This. For my Social Studies class I think I had nearly 20 lates by the end of the semester. Usually the teacher will assign a study hall (detention) but mine never did. I think she gave up on me...

Is this a joke? Of course kids should be punished for being late. School starts when they say, not when it's convenient for the kid.

Pirate700

This.

Also, letting kids be late with penalty will teach some of them that the same behavior is okay in the workplace.

If your late to work than you get fired, if your late to school you get penalized. Sounds fair to me and teaches kids about being responsible. In real life after you get out of school you can't be late to your job, or they axe you.

My school doesn't penalize me. I think it's better. I'm usually 15 minutes early, but sometimes the bus comes very late and I'm late for class. I hate teachers who throw a fit over it. The absolute worse teachers are the ones who don't believe you though. They roll their eyes acting all superior, I wish I could hit the back of their head with a large stone.

Not IMO however if that lateness means they miss some crucial teaching or are late for a test then they shouldn't expect any sympathy.

Depends. If it's occasional, there should not be a huge deal made of it. Sometimes kids miss buses, forget to set alarms etc. And sometimes they're responsible for younger siblings. If it becomes a regular thing, it should be discussed with the student and parents.

Most places that I've worked won't fire you for being a few minutes late, even if it happens a couple times a week. This includes 2 large national companies.

Give a warning the first couple of times and then start taking points off or giving detention. That's what they did when I was in school. I do think they should start the school day later than they do. 7-7:30 is ridiculous.

Is this a joke? Of course kids should be punished for being late. School starts when they say, not when it's convenient for the kid.

GreySeal9

This.

Also, letting kids be late with penalty will teach some of them that the same behavior is okay in the workplace.

The thing about what Pirate700 said though: It's not like we are trying to convince them to makeclasses start at a fifferent time. Just let them come in a little later without causing a big fuss. Yeah, they will miss time, that's no reason to punish them further.

And you don't need to punish kids at school to teach them how to behave in a workplace. Just tell them that a workplace is different, and if they don't listen, that's their own fault. Sometimes things happen and you have to show up late, you shouldn't need to beg the school for forgiveness, it's none of their buisiness why people show up late or don't show up at all. Their job is to teach the kids who are there.

In my school if you arrive later than 8 min, you aren't allowed to come in the class at all. And you'll need to come back after school for an extra hour of class

Also, am I the only one who thinks this sort of thing incourages students not to come at all if they are going to be late? Better late then never right?

If you're late to a job you get fired.

School is supposed to be "training" for the real world.

[QUOTE="k2theswiss"]First before you cry about waking up at 5:40 to leave at 6:40. Don't cry anyone can get easy get ready in 20 mins. TWO IF your getting ride and it's not working then you need start taking the bus. or get your own ride. COME back and blame your home because your late when you have a good reason. SO Take the school bus or tell your dad get his butt up or get your self your own ridek2theswiss

I can't imagine myself getting ready in 20 minutes. I couldn't wake up, make and eat breakfast, take a shower, get dressed, check on my pets, and leave my house in anything less than 40 minutes.

i do it all the time. wake up at 4:50 soon as i wake up let the dogs out in fence jump in shower/ brush teeth/ brush the hair for. By then thats about 5:00-5:02 grab frosted flakes by then it's 5:10 or less. grab keys go outside get dogs toss them back in the house. (Don't go back in) Get in the car no latter then 5:12. Off to work. BUT hey thats just me

That sounds highly stressful and insane. For me to do my morning routine "correctly," I need about an hour. 40 minutes is in full rush-mode, and that's only if I have breakfast that I can run out the door with.

lol Participation is like 5% of my school's grade, not much of a difference if a teacher takes off points. But kids at my school can get a truancy ticket (from the police) for being late too many times. Here's my stance on this issue: I see kids that walk into class 40 minutes late everyday when class lasts around 53 minutes and they don't get in any trouble while me, like the good Samaritan I am, arrives on time everyday. I think either I should get a cookie, or they should get a Tardy.

The teachers union supports laziness which is probably why kids dont feel the need to show up to school on time. Moreover, the schools are not engaged in the students enough to enable them to want to be their on time.

Its partially the kids fault for being lazy, and they should be punished. It shouldn't be OK to stroll into class whenever you want. Its also the education systems fault for promoting the behavior.

For these reasons, I am a HUGE supporter of Charter Schools. They provide better results, a better education, with less resources.

I'm willing to bet those people who arrive late every day are getting much lower grades then you, possibly failing, because they miss too much information. I really don't understand why that isn't enough!

What's the point of having a class schedule if no one sticks to it? Showing up on time isn't a lot to ask so a reprimand for being late is only fair.

I hated high school for that reason. It starts so god damn early, and you expect these kids to be on time every day? High schoolKids are not getting enough sleep, how are you supposed to get 8-10 hours if youre up at 5:45? Being 2-3 minutes late is nothing, people should be much more lenient.
