Sure. I don't think there are any invisible boundaries to make the universe finite....

if it weren't infinite I wonder what nothingness would look like. Would it be an endless blank white light? If so then where would the light be coming from? Would it be an endless blackness completely lacking in light? If so would that be any different from space?

Serraph105
How is current space an endless blackness completely lacking light? What about all the stars, black holes and galaxies? They would still be emitting light

I mean where you look into the night sky and there is no stars. Sure those are relatively small parts, but there are many that exist. Would it be any different that than that except for the fact that you can't look into the distance and see a star somewhere? If so how would that not also be part of the universe if you could go there.

we cant even honestly make it to the moon....so how in the world do we know its infinite?

VanDammFan

What do you mean we can't make it to the moon.

Not only have we (or our lander and orbiter, and rover) been there, we've landed rover on Mars for years, and we actually landed a probe as far as Saturn's sixth moon : Titan, we also have probes that's now flying out of the solar system, we are making progress here.

NOPE...sorry..we have NOT been to the moon. THIS however is my opinion and not everyone else's

I'm not angry, I'm just very direct when I'm online... no real reason not to be. As for the comment to VanDamm... why not say that if it's calculated to offend his particular sensibilities? Normally, I'd post some kind of facepalm gif, but for him... oh well.

Well I could throw in a few dots between the words but than it's not really the full word. What skills am I lacking exactly....... bro? If the TOS changed and we can say these words without a filter than why is it still filtering the words?

Based on the current understanding of the universe, it has a finite volume that is expanding.

What say you?

I'm indifferent since we can't know for sure.

Frame_Dragger

Its been proved that the universe is expanding, as this is the case it cannot be infinite, just very large.

This is untrue... it could be infinite, expanding, and have been infinitely expanding for an infinite duration. Due to the Cosmological Event Horizon, we can't know. It's a conceptual kick in the balls, but expansion/contraction doesn't contradict infinite extent.

If it were infinite it could not expand as it would have nothing to expand into as it would already occupy all available space, at least that is my understanding of it, I thought the current understanding was that is wasn't infinate.

[QUOTE="colibriosis"][QUOTE="RisethNameless"]I generally tend to go with the idea that it is always expanding. Since there can't be infinite universe, and what the hell would be the border?

Maybe it's like the earth was until we invented planes and rockets? We just need the right technology to get out of the universe, to something even bigger (or a parallell one lol). Imagine what people will be saying in a thousand years (if still existing) about us who imagined the universe basically as a "flat neverending surface" like we once had imagined the earth to be.

The idea of parallel universes is widely accepted by theoretical physicists. Right now as I am typing, one has been created. Every time you make a decision that could have went either way, an alternate universe is created, or so it is thought.

There is a better way on informing vandammfan. Scientists from every corner of the world were watching the first astronauts as they embarked on the journey to the moon. Do you honestly think we could get every single thing right and con it perfectly and have not a single articulate person spot it.

The space race consisted of years and years of work, billions of dollars, thousands of pounds of coffee, and hundreds of thousands of people working around the clock working diligently trying to get to space.

It was not just to make something outta a michael Bay film.

You really enjoy the notion that other people are young, don't you? I'll grant you, you're 9 years my senior, and obviously well into your dotage, but still.... have some self respect.

@Taylor888: According to String Theories... it could be quite a few different configuration, but the only theory which has empirical support is GR, which sticks to 3+1.

Space is infinite. The universe is not. the universe has a starting point as to when it began its expansion, and seeing as it's continuing to expand, it's not at infinity just yet. But it's really, really large.jman1553

Then there would be somthing out side the universe. it can not just end with nothing out side of it. What i am saying is if there is nothing outside it then that would be considerd space to.but how knows? we will all be gone befor anyone finds out

It could have been expanding for an infinite time...
