[QUOTE="MissRiotmaker"][QUOTE="Vfanek"]Don't diss early Dimmu (For All Tid, Stormblast (remastered isn't bad either)). But Cradle? They're just ****.MissRiotmaker

I'll tell you the same. Don't diss Cradle of Filth. Personal opinion reigns here. Don't bash others for not liking what you like. Egotistical jerk.

Cradle of Filth may be okay pop-gothic metal or whatever. But compared to the standards of black metal, they are awful. The only thing good to come from Dimmu is Stormblast. For All Tid is too cheesey and misses the mark. Cradle hasn't really done anything for black metal.

Pop-gothic? LULZ! I'm taking you've never actually listened to them. Anyone can listen to Cradle of Filth for 20 seconds and think "hmmm they're garbage." It took me nearly a year to get into them. I have all their albums and all their live dvds. They're fantastic, Dani Filth is awesome. Their older stuff was amazing but Thornography really brought them to together. Also, Behemoth, Celtic Frost, Mystic Forest, Moonspell (their earlier years), Leviathan, Bathory, Frost Like Ashes, Ragnarok, Sabbat, early Tiamat and Wintersun are all amazing.

Cradle of Filth is trash. Black metal is beautiful artistic music. I don't feel like going into a huge argument about this, but I'm sure I could direct you to forums full of people who study metal as an art form and would love to tell you why Cradle of Filth is terrible. You can like them, listen to them, etc. but you should realize bands like Bathory and Burzum have much more to them than a band like Cradle of Filth.

totally agree
i'm gonna say it again
those bands aren't that bad, but we, the thing we are saying is that they are NOT Black Metal
in any sense

BTW, come on! lets talk about other bands
i made this topic to talk about Black Metal, you know?

Cradle of Filth are a heavy metal band formed in Suffolk, England in 1991. They have been embraced and disowned with equal fervour by various metal communities, and their particular subgenre has provoked a great deal of discussion. The band's sound evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal ****, while their lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films.

what are you trying to say?
i just don't get it

Wow... just wow... seems there is no hope for you after all.

i don't know what your point is, really, i'm not trying to bash them or something, yeah, i don't like them, but i fully respect the opinion of everyone

the only thing i'm saying is that i don't see that band as being a black metal band, NOT because of their sound, BUT because of their way of thinking and acting (and im not refering to being mainstream)

but then again, their sound is better than many others out there

btw, i kinda like their H.P. Lovecraft influence

Music discussions are pointless here. You have the elitists trying to convert you to their way of thinkng because they think what they believe is absolute. To answer your question, no. Those kids went to bed. :|

What is it you guys like in Black Metal? I listen to the music and find nothing interesting or good about it. It's just growling and beating on drums like gorillas. I just can't figure out why people like it so much.

Enlighten me.

I'm surprised. Some of that stuff by Burzum isn't half bad. It's just this "br00tal" metal, like Immortal, Emperor, Nile, and even death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse. It just sounds like rubbish to me. Sounds like gorillas growling and beating things. I can't find anything good about those types of bands, honestly. I don't understand how quite a few people here like that stuff. http://youtube.com/watch?v=8MH4P2WudnY Sounds horrible.

Maybe a bad example then. Or maybe I'm just not exactly sure of the difference between the two. I'm 90% sure Black Metal is pretty identical to death metal. So, what exactly is the difference? :|

the easiest way to tell is the vocals. the low gutteral growls belong to death metal, while the high screeches belong to black metal. beyond that, theres lyrical themes. death metal lyrics are about death (duh :P ) and accompanying topics while black metal lyrics are generally rooted in satanism and some paganism.

I honestly can't see how one can't see the difference between the 2. They're 2 equally extreme forms of metal but so drastically different.

One of the main differences I notice is the forms of vocals. In Death Metal, it's usually Gunting and Growling, and in Melodic Death Metal, there's ocassionally clean vocals. Black metal however, has mor screams and shrieks. If you really want to hear the difference, listen to Dark Tranquility and then listen to some early Mayhem....

anyone who says bands like burzum, mayhem or darkthrone have more talent than cradle of filth clearly hasnt mastered any instruments in their life.

Cradle of Filth may not be "black metal" (who cares anyway honestly?) but they definately arent a bad band, and I would absolutely adore anyone on this forum to write their own song and have it be even half as good as a cradle song. Im not talking about damnation and a day and on either.

the bottom line is this.... Black metal is cool and all... but it does NOT take a lot of talen to make. thats why theres more joke black metal bands than any other genre (exluding maybe hardcore) Black metal is slightly more advanced than Crust Punk.

Im not saying burzum, mayhem or darkthrone are bad bands (actually out of all three darkthrone is the only one thats musically good in my opinion) but NONE of them hold a candle stick to COF. I hate mallgoths as much as the next guy, but cradle of filth are talented musicians (you not liking them is cant take that away from them ever). Bands like mayhem have been notorious for not beingcapable of playing venom covers correctly. THAT IS SAD.

ive played in a band that did some light touring. im going to get a job as a guitar teacher soon and i was trained by someone who if I told you the projects hes worked on you wouldnt believe me.

who am i kidding, everyone who says they hate the band in this thread probably has all their cds.... ha

if you really want to know about the difference, you must listen to both genres
however, the only thing that link them is that both genres are "extreme" metal genres
there is nothing more, no vocals, no music, no influence, no ideology, no lyrics
everything is different

yeah, there is too much garbage in this genre, but that isn't because you don't need to have a talent
the thing is
i would rather not to say this, but Ghaal said one time that:
it doesn't matter how you sound, the thing that matters is what you express
and I completely agree with that
it doesn't take any talent to make the sound, but the lyrics and the meanings are other different thing
yeah, there are hundreds of black metal bands and not all (hell, even half) those bands make good music (i don't mean just sound) and many of these bands are pretty much the same (they aren't original)
but that means nothing
for me at least
there will always be good, original and real music

if you think that band is better, well, it's your opinion
i think pretty much the opposite about it
so what?

oh, and BTW, i don't have their CDs.... ha!

It's called acquiring a taste in music. All black metal and death metal has melody. You guys just hear drums and complex timing and you go "omg i cant hear a distinguishable melody on my first listen! its not music!".

If someone can't tell the difference, there are probably tone-deaf or they just don't have well-trained ears. Not like either matters though. It's probably pure ignorance.

how is it pure ignorance, are you even a musician? how would you know? black metal was the first kind of music i was able to play.

let me breakdown black metal for you:

1. Learn power chords

2. Learn harmonic minor scale SHAPE (notice i said shape, not the actual scale its self)

3 tremelo pick power chords often, usually minor intervals.

thats all of black metal summed up buddy. its not hard. granted theres some bands who take it a bit farther. but you can tell 90% of all the bands follow those three rules to the death. NOT hard.

[QUOTE="pikma"]actually, now that I think about it, if you think you don't need that much talent to make Black Metal
well, that's pure ignorance
GodLovesDead

how is it pure ignorance, are you even a musician? how would you know? black metal was the first kind of music i was able to play.

let me breakdown black metal for you:

NOT hard.

Making and writing /=/ playing. Fail.

Actually I believe I won this thread. So, you're welcome to a round 2 if you'd like. you "fail"

I am a fan of Black metal, traditional second wave bands being my favorite. Bands I like are Bathory, Burzum, Darkthrone, Dissection, Drudkh, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Mayhem, Summoning, Graveland, Enslaved, Thorns, 1349.

Alot of people have a hard time grasping that technical proficiency and the ability to write and compose are two seperate talents. While many Black Metal bands are not nearly as technically proficient as your average technical Death Metal band, Black Metal musicians have a talent for writing music that conveys the atmosphere and emotion that defines Black Metal. Minimalism and simplicity go along way to acheive this atmosphere.
