Well, seeing that the USA has no official language, hating people because they speak a different language is just plain nativism. Most people have ancestors that came here during the huge wave of immigration in the early 1900's. Most of them didn't speak english. Are you saying they should have not been allowed into The Land of Opportunity?RoyTheViking

They didn't learn english instantly. And I hate to say it, but many people who come over here from hispanic countries can't afford to learn english.
If you live in a country you should make the effort to learn the language.....LJS9502_basic

Yet....English is still the language that is spoken officially and always has been. Nonetheless, I was referring to any country.[QUOTE="LiquidZ08"][QUOTE="Snomel"]You sir would divide the world and be the cause of WW2.5.People all over the world would have every right to adopt this policy. If you want to live in Japan that badly, learn at least the basics of the language.
I can't even begin to imagine living in a country where I don't know at least some of the language =/ Even going on holiday for a week, it frustrates me if I can't attempt to make some form of communication with the people who live there.

Firstly, I'm female. Secondly, this is a huge over-reaction. Is it really so wrong to expect someone to learn the language of the country they live in!? Sure, if someone is a refugee, and has a good reason to need to leave their home country, they should be welcomed anywhere. But if someone just thinks, "hey, it'd be really cool to live in Japan" (or any other country, for that matter), it's only fair that they learn the basic language and customs of the place they wish to live.
actually you learn language the best when you are surrounded by it. You can be pretty fluent in 3 months if you try.To be truthfully honest, it does annoy me. If you're going to live in America, learn the language, and learn it correctly. tomxizorIt annoys me too. I agree.
true... and Americans are the worse when they visit foreign countries. they go to France and can't speak ANY French and get angry that the French act snooty... when in reality Americans seem just as snooty to any foreign visitors who can't speak English perfectlyGuess what morons, this country is based upon immigrants DEAL WITH IT!
I'm French/Mexican and my first language was not English....so blah!

Why would it annoy me? How would you feel if you had to move to Japan for some reason and everyone treated you like crap just because you couldn't speak fluent Japanese?megagene
It does annoy me. A tourist or someone on vacation is one thing, but people who live here that dont annoy me. If you decide to come here.. that is great, but learn the language. Too many people dont speak English and make no effort to learn it which is absurd. You should not be given legal residency or citizenship without speaking English. Diablo112688

I live in Denver, and we have one of the biggest immigrant populations in the country. It really does irritate me when people that do not speak English get jobs which require them to talk to people. If they don't want to learn the language, they shouldn't have to, but they should NOT get jobs that require a lot of public contact.SmashBrosLegend

Lolll, its funny, I think its the opposite, english here dont try to speak french (im in Quebec, Canada)TiJoe6you are right there but in canada most french can speak english so it isint that big of a deal, but in calgary so many immigrants from so many countries and in our country were not supposed to be a melting pot so we let them keep everything including language so its hard sometimes, but most learn english pretty well.
It annoys me more when people can speak English but chat in their language when they want a private conversation.SolidSnake35Yeah, that ticks me off as well:| I always get paranoid and think they are talking about me:(
Wow. I can't believe the amount of ignorance and hate in this thread. Learning a new language is difficult. For some it may be too difficult. Put yourself in their shoes. Imagine being unable to communicate with the people around you. I'm sure that many don't even have access to the resources necessary to learn the language. Even if they should chose to stick to their native language they shouldn't be ridiculed or treated like garbage. I'm annoyed at the amount of intolerance people seem to have for anyone who might be slightly different than them.Niebz
