Yes, it expands your vocabulary and if you're reading non-fiction you obviously learn about the topic of the book. Reading also introduces you to new ideas and concepts to think about.

I think that reading books expand your vocabulary and grammar skills -- and depending on the type of book you can learn a lot from reading.

It is definitely a mental exercise. I once saw a comparison between watching TV and reading, where the brain was lit up in certain places if it was being exercised. When reading, pretty much all the brain was lit up bright red, whereas while watching TV it wasn't really that lit up.

Although I'm sure that if they added another activity into this study, say, working on calculus questions, that would be way more taxing than reading.

Yes, they make you more knowledgeable about the world. When you're more knowledgeable you're seeing a larger picture of the world, and thus are going to make more connections, formulate more hypotheses, and seek out more knowledge. The reson why so many people here are going to say no is because they don't read books, and surely don't want to feel like they are robbing themselves of an opportunity to become more intelligent. They're in denial.

I rarely read books in school, but always got 95-100% on English reading and writing tests if I cared.

stop playing so many video games and it will stop wandering while reading. Video games condition your brain so that you lose interest if you arent interacting with flashing objects on a bright colorful screen.

Yea it amkes you smarter. If it is somthing like Band of Brothers then definately it expands the amount of knowledge of WWII, some people-like myself-also find those books enjoyable. If you are reading somthing like the song of ice anf fire, Lord of the Rings series' or a Robert Ludlum book then not so much. However, it does make you smarter. It expands your vocabulary and grammer. Although this does not make you smarter, it also does not ruin your etes like video games or TV:)

Yes and no. The more you read, the more you learn, the broader your vocabulary becomes and so on. Yet if all you read is trashy romance novels, tabloids, etc. not so much.

it depends. if you read a real novel, yes it can. It can broaden your vocabulary as well as open your mind to new ideas. but if you read garbage, then it'll only make you dumber. either way, brain's gonna have something happen to it.

Its already too late! I wouldnt blame it all on video games. My mind wanders off to things like "oh I've read this before" "yeah I remember that" "I wonder if I went to Wendy's twice yesterday" "I would cast Christian Bale if I were to make this into a movie" "Did I really go to Wendy's twice yesterday?"

Not exactly smarter. Although i have learned things from books, not like text books from like just fiction books. However you also learn about words and their meaning and things in life. I think you get smarter in a way just not always like book smarts.

reading really cannot make you any smarter. Reading can make you more educated, so that you will use your native intelligence more rationally and wisely.

Reading equals learning and entertainment together.
