I am in a huge debate over pets. I have a toddler, the toddlers play room is where our 2 beagle live/sleep. They have an actually bed. Their hair is everywhere, and my kid has ashtma. On top of it all, they chew and destroy the toys, take pisses and crap on the floor, am i in the wrong to be upset ? I have a huge yard, they have a huge closed in gated fence with a $200 dollar dog house, that also has a huge bed inside. The debate is my wife loves the dogs, and she wishes for them to live indoors, so they do. She thinks i hate dogs, and pets in general. I honestly don't, i just don't have time to be cleaning poop, and hair, and walking and feeding, and attention. I give that to my toddler, and i its hard to find time being away from home 12hrs a day. I know everyone has different opinions, but what do you guys think ? They also destroyed the yard, and poop and destroy the grass, also destroy the screen door, and destroy our furniture in that room by chewing on it, they eat expnsive shoes, ect. I guess this is what happens when you get married, you just have to put up with stuff, thank goodness for beer, sports, games, classic cars, and TV !

They are already trained, they know where their crap area is. I even get up at 6 am to let them out. But there are times, they just want to crap in the house ? Its not often, but its often enough. My guess is they are trying to tell me in their language, that they want to live outdoors. I honestly believe that.

If they are bitting furniture and going to the bathroom inside they aren't well trained.

This, perhaps if any of you had taken the time to properly train the dog, it wouldn't jump on the couches and it wouldn't defecate or urinate inside the house

If your dogs are pooping and peeing in the house, then they are not trained.

if you're allowing that behavior, then they are never gonna be trained.

I'd imagine having dogs indoor would be really disgusting. I'm a cat person myself. I don't know why I feel that dogs have this distinct stench they spread everywhere they go.

They actually graduated from Petsmart, also they go to the groomers every 6 months for hair removal, nails, teeth brushing and massage. THey are still a huge pain in the rear. They never enter past the kitchen when i'm home, and never get on the furniture when i'm home. The wifee, kids are the ones that allow the dogs to do things. When the dogs see me, they never do wrong, they are trained like soilders. But when i'm not there is when they feel free. I guess my problem might be the idiots that love animals so much, they don't care about hair, and dirty floors. I care, i don't want to sit in a sofa full of hair, i also dont' want my toddler playing on a floor thats dirty ass heck. I'd personally have them live outside ! My guess is there are two kinds of people, ones who like them in the home, and others that don't. I should have created a poll.

there is almost no such thing as an outdoor dog.

maybe a siberian or husky or something would be the closest thing to an outside dog because they are built for hard conditions.

the vast majority of them need to be indoors.

if you are having problems with your unsupervised dogs doing things you don't want them to do there is a simple solution.

crate them.

they can't break the rules if they are crated when nobody is watching them.

if they are tearing things up and getting into trouble while people are home then it is time to bring in a professional trainer and let him see what the situation is and how to fix it.

so the dog with a longer warmer coat stays inside while the ones with the short tight coats go outside?

i mean i would not have the lab outside either but your logic is totally backwards on which dogs are the most protected from the elements.

Best response yet ! I actually do have one crate, i used it before they took their training at Petsmart. I'll have to buy another and lock them up at night if they crap a third day in a row. Wifee says it might be something they ate, but i don't think so, i had let them out one hour prior to the accident. Then it happen next morning. Crate will do !

Most dogs belong outside, especially if they are large dogs. Small dogs like toy poodles, chihuahuas, minuture dobermans, terriers etc should be kept indoors, medium sized dogs like beagles can be either or. Now, that said, if the dogs do not leave the kitchen while you are home, they know that you will not allow them to make a mess, until you go to sleep so it is your wife that also needs training as well as more for the dogs if you continue keeping them in the house. They should not be making a mess of your house and your wife should not be allowing it as well as your kids.

Now lastly, but the most important, the asthma. Pet dander can excerbate asthma and make your son sicker. Pet Dander at the American Lung Association has more details on it and is something your wife should read. If you have an attached garage, you could always put them in there and then your kids can take them in the yard to play with them and put them back in the garage after playing with them and it will help keep the fur and dander out of the carpet and furniture so your son doesn't have a bad asthma attack.

[QUOTE="XilePrincess"]Why didn't you train your animals? Duh...LexLas

I care, i don't want to sit in a sofa full of hair, i also dont' want my toddler playing on a floor thats dirty ass heck. I'd personally have them live outside ! My guess is there are two kinds of people, ones who like them in the home, and others that don't. I should have created a poll.

You have to always crate train your dog yourself. Your dog needs to see you as the pack master, if someone else trains it, it rarely works out. It needs to respect you, if it does respect you it will obey the rules you taught it when it was young. Now I hate it that I even have to say this, but never never hit or abuse your animals, they are not stupid, they might become better when you're around, but when they get the chance they will rebel by tearing up things and crapping and pissing in sometimes hidden locations.

If you crate train your dog properly and it acts out when it's older, all you have to do is verbally let it know and put it back into the crate for its punishment. Now if you've done all of this and your dog is still acting out it's more then likely that it needs more activity to get its energy out, if you are a busy person that doesn't have much time to walk and play with your dog then you should seek out a dog breed that requires less exercise.

When it comes to their smell, it's only a problem if you don't wash them enough, although when your out in hot conditions your dog will get that doggie smell, but I've noticed that after they cool down that smell tends to fade away, so if your worried about spreading that smell throughout your home, you should keep them in a confined area for a little bit after they get worked up outside.

Also, all dog breeds are dramatically different when it comes to shedding, some dogs don't shed much while other dogs are constantly shedding, I try to brush my labs hair every other day, but that still isn't enough, but I have a good vacuum that's great with hair, so as long as I vacuum a couple times a month it really isn't a problem. Even if you've done all that, all your efforts will be wasted if other people who are with your dog lets it break the rules.

I love my dog, and it's so well trained that people can't believe how good she is, and how she listens, and does what I tell her, but when I have to travel I leave her with my parents, and after a week or more with them she starts to listen less and tries to get away with things she would normally never do, but after I'm back for a few days, she behaves just like her old self.

I personally don't like keeping any dogs outdoors, it can make things worse especially for someone in your position, I would bet it would become way dirtier and much smellier, then when you're not around I'm sure the dog will be let in the house, making your problem exponentially worse, plus I can give you one example of when my dog got bitten by a tick, then contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which lead to Encephalitis and almost killed her, it took about $1600 and the University of Tennessee to cure her, so I never ever let her get out of my sight outdoors anymore.

Ultimately you may just not be a dog lover, and no matter what you do you may never be happy with the situation, if that's the case then get ready to compromise, and try an make it into the best situation you can.

Indoors of course. If your dogs are tearing things up and taking craps inside then you aren't giving them enough attention or training them properly.

Def sounds like the pets are not the problem. Owned chihuahuas and a Maltese over the last 26 years and by the time they were 1, the accidents stopped. Sounds like someone isn't watching them close enough, and failing to provide the proper correction. when a puppy uses the carpet, show them the door, and take them outside until they poo or pee. If it happened again tell them no and let them know you are upset. Third time, a light whack that causes them to yelp, nothing hard. A dog isn't fully trained until it goes a full month without an accident. If you cannot get them trained within a week, they may no longer be trainable. Also tell the dog good boy/girl when it goes through the proper motions. Everyone needs to be in on it, otherwise you are wasting your time.

Dogs should be outside, my brother has 2 large dogs and has them inside a lot and his place stinks.  There's always dog hair on the couch and even his kids beds which is revolting, we all hate going around there because of this.  TC your wife needs to get her priorities straight, kids are far more important than dogs.  The solution is pretty simple really, the dogs are the problem so eliminate the problem.

Way to generalize all dogs, just based off of your brothers 2 dogs.

That was obviously just ONE example.

well it reads as a generalization of dogs as a whole.

That is just one example I've experienced but all dogs have a certain odour and all have hair so it's only fair to generalize them to a certain degree.

Not all dogs shed. and bathing can usually get rid of a smelly dog.

putting a dog outside simply because he/she smells and sheds is not the answer.

you should know what you are getting into when you get a dog.

Give the dogs baths, don't have cloth couches and wash bed sheets and blankets then you don't really have any of those problems.

Most dogs belong outside, especially if they are large dogs.

WhiteKnight77

Based on what. All dogs belong indoors if you want them to stay happier and healthier.

[QUOTE="XilePrincess"]Why didn't you train your animals? Duh...Ne-Plus-Ultra

Thnx everyone for some of the most interesting and funny answers. I read every response. OT ain't dead, its awesome ! Awesome gamers/users/peeps, and down to earth people in here. Thanks !!
