I'm cool with drones.  I'm not cool with us using them to murder people who are so-called terrorists whilst also killing the innocent people around them.

[QUOTE="frannkzappa"]

[QUOTE="Riverwolf007"]well sure right now they might but even at this point i would probably trust an artificial intelligence routine more to make a split second life or death decision than a sleep deprived infantryman that has seen his friends die and is in some sort of compromised emotional and psysical state.

Riverwolf007

At the moment AI can't even do that.

yeah but how far away can we possible be?

a decade or two?

Hard to say. But i would estimate 50 years being the absolute max.

agree with op. Kill terrorists, save americans.

SNIPER4321

yeah,. riight.

drones kill more civillians than "terrorist".

and do u realise that more u use drone. more ppls become terrorist. best solution is stop war.

I looked up the ration. it's 1 civilian for every 50 terrorists.

Pretty good imo. before precision missiles it was like 1:1.

Some of you would have been the biggest whiners in WW2.

very very.

Hope they're ready for combat this decade.

I'd love to see american soilders all on the sidelines just remotely controlling robots, rather than putting their lives at risk.

plus terrorists can't afford them!! So they're just throwing bodies at metal essentially.

So even if they succeed they won't kill anybody. Talk about demoralizing.

Why is the United States so advanced? We draw the most intelligent people on the planet. That's what happened with German scientists after WWII, what continues to happen to this day, and why there are so many asian graduate students at my university Physics department.

I oppose them for the same reason I oppose air and missile strikes.  It takes away the risk and makes the decision to attack too simple.  Taking lethal action is supposed to be a difficult decision to make.  The political fallout of headlines screaming "US SOLDIERS DEAD" is an important counter-balance; it helps decision-makers ask themselves if they're really doing the right thing.

Oleg_Huzwog

tbh I have never even considered that view before, but I completely agree.  Being able to perform a standoff attack of some sort without exposing yourself to any sort of physical retalliation (and thus limiting domestic politcal pressure due to casualties) makes things too easy.

Definitely do not think air/missile strikes are as applicable in the current climate as they were in the cold war, i.e. during army vs army conflict, either.

Whats wrong with killing people in a war? It's a great way for a nation to expand, gain resources, remove threats,jump-start the economy and it even spurs technological advancement (not to mention all this greatly benefits the citizens of the winning nation).

The real question is "whats right with pacifism"?

I actually worked on the team that put hellfires on the predator and worked on the reaper (only for a short time). But i don't work at GA (general atomics) anymore so i don't do much with drones now.

While I am not for violence of any kind in the form of war, I have yet to hear any adequate argument why manned airstrikes are somehow better than unmanned airstrikes.

In fact if unmanned flights were more the norm, most of seal team 6 would be alive right now.

[QUOTE="frannkzappa"]

why should i care about anywhere else (in terms of war at least)? it's idiotic to want war to be fair. if it was up to me the other guys would have sharpened sticks while we have tanks, that's an ideal situation (except from an economic stand point. the only time i would want an evenly matched war would be to jump start the economy Ala ww1 and ww2.

frannkzappa

well, besides that you should realize how your view is colored by being born on the more advantageous side of this issue, to care about anywhere else is also your only chance for peace, or at least a somewhat peaceful existence. i think being unfair and on a structural basis, amongst other things, creates great frustration which will lead to enemies you can't beat because they can't lose. like the ones we call terrorists that have shown they can pop up anywhere at any time no matter how many drones you let up.

of course i'm biased. It is only natural for the strong to try and impose on the weak (there is a very fine line between this and thrasymachus' fallacy).

Also peace is not ideal. if peace was the norm or the only option, it would be very difficult for us to take what we want from other nations.

I could probably say the same that I don't care about US lives because that isn't where I was born. But as a human, that would be a dick thing for me to say, so no. Being born somewhere by chance doesn't make me selfish and hateful to others, it could have been any place on the World.

You have every "right" to, it's only human.

Also i am not "hateful" i just care more about creating a perfect nation state.
