I live in Smyrna GA, 11 miles from downtown Atlanta and I didn't feel a thing though I have seen reports of people south of the city feeling it. Now my brother in Williamsburg VA and my Pops in Newport News VA both felt it while my Ma, driving to get an xray didn't feel a thing (maybe a couple of miles from where they live. My sister and family felt in outside of Baltimore with my niece freaking out, but my nephew thought it fun and is waiting for the aftershocks.
The quake was centered near Mineral VA or 27 miles east of Charlottesville and about 100 miles from where my parents live. The North Anna Nuclear plant is ~ 12 miles from where the earthquake was centered and had been shut down as a precaution. This is the second time this year a VA nuclear power plant was affected by a natural event. Earlier this year, a tornado hit the Surry nuclear power plant causing a shutdown of one of the reactors there and this plant is within the warning radius of where my brother and parents live.
My Pops took a second to realize what was going on, it's been a few years (40?) since he last felt an earthquake. I would have known right away if I had felt it for what it was, Living in Japan for 3 years, Okinawa for 2 and in SoCal for 2 1/2 years allowed me to get rather familiar with them. Oh, just as an FYI, never go to the basement of a building during an earthquake, if the building collapses, it will all fall into the basement for the most part. We were taught to evacuate outside (at least in base housing in Japan) in the event of a quake.
